If confirmed, the discovery would support claims by the United States and others that the Assad regime had been involved in actively exporting the drug. Captagon has become a significant social problem in neighboring Arab nations and spurred some of them to engage in talks with the former Syrian regime to curb its trafficking. It is believed to have become an economic lifeline for the Assad regime while it was under crippling American sanctions. This week, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya reported the discovery of thousands of captagon pills at the Mazzeh airbase south of Damascus. Last year, the US Treasury sanctioned a number of Syrians closely associated with the Assad regime for their alleged involvement captagon trade.

A torture device discovered at Saydnaya prison in Damascus on Monday. Clothing strewn across the floor of a cell inside the Saydnaya prison as a Syrian man awaits news about an imprisoned relative Monday. The dynasty built and operated a network of detention centers scattered across Syria, according to the human rights group Amnesty International. The Human Rights Data Analysis Group, an independent scientific human rights organization based in San Francisco, has counted at least 17,723 people killed in Syrian custody from 2011 to 2015 — around 300 every week — almost certainly a vast undercount, it says. Syrians wait for news Monday about their relatives incarcerated at Saydnaya prison.

The exact location of Israeli forces was unclear. And U.S. NATO ally Turkey said Israel was "once against displaying its occupying mentality," condemning its actions while Syria strives for "peace and stability." But Israel’s ground offensive carries “significant risks,” especially if they are going beyond the buffer zone as Netanyahu hinted, warned Michael A. Horowitz, a geopolitical and security analyst. The roughly 155-square-mile buffer zone between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights was created after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. Netanyahu said Sunday that the agreement that established the zone had “collapsed” after Syrian soldiers abandoned their positions amid the overthrow of Assad.

CNN —The US government is rushing to uncover new information on the whereabouts of Austin Tice following the collapse of the Syrian government this weekend. The US State Department is also offering a reward of up to $10 million for information on Tice. But they also fear what could come from radical Islamists governing Syria, which borders Israel in the occupied Golan Heights. Images taken by an AFP journalist at Mezzeh Air Base southwest of Damascus also showed destroyed Syrian military helicopters. CNN could not independently confirm that claim, but the village lies in the Syrian foothills of Mount Hermon, which Israeli forces captured on Sunday. The US isn't the only military conducting strikes amid the uncertain situation in Syria. The US military has carried out extensive airstrikes in Syria since the Assad regime collapsed over the weekend, and it's not the only country on the hunt for targets in this uncertain moment. F-15 Strike Eagles, like the one pictured above, took part in the widespread strikes against ISIS over the weekend. The US military said the goal of the strikes was to prevent ISIS from reconstituting in central Syria. These sects have coexisted in this region for hundreds of years, and no one has the right to eliminate them,” Jolani told CNN. For now, his leadership of HTS remains defined by military success, with the group growing into a formidable force against the Assad regime and its powerful backers, including Russia and Iran. Still, the question remains: Can HTS can evolve from a militant insurgency into a legitimate governing authority in post-Assad Syria? While the future of HTS and Syria remains uncertain, Jolani is steadfast. The rebel leader said Sunday there would be “no turning back” after toppling the Assad regime.

The swift collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime represents a devastating defeat for Iran, the latest in a string of setbacks that have punctured long held assumptions in the West about Tehran’s military prowess. As the rebels pressed ahead, there was no concerted effort to stop the advance with Russian warplanes or Iranian-backed proxy forces. “Assad was effectively abandoned because his only friends ... Iran, Hezbollah and Russia, no longer had the capacity to help,” the official added. The United States and other governments had feared an Israeli attack on Iran would produce an overwhelming response against Israel by Iran’s proxies. Those officers had decades of experience in Syria and a network of contacts among the militants in Iran’s proxy network, including Iraqis, Afghans, Pakistanis, Yemenis and others.

DAMASCUS, Syria — Jubilant Syrians waving flags clambered Monday onto a government tank abandoned in the capital city's main square and took selfies. Then they chained it to the back of a truck and dragged it through the streets past cheering crowds. Hours after Assad fled, HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Jolani arrived at a Damascus mosque wearing military fatigues. Still, President Joe Biden on Sunday declared, "At long last, the Assad regime has fallen." “We will engage with all Syrian groups, including within the process led by the United Nations, to establish a transition away from the Assad regime," he said.

He did so as the rebels entered and seized Damascus, seemingly with little fightback from Assad’s government forces. Syria dominated international consciousness for almost a decade, its civil war erupting after Assad crushed peaceful protests during the region-wide 2011 Arab Spring. But until last month the conflict had been largely at a stalemate, after Assad’s forces regained control of much of the country. The conflict in Syria partly contributed to a wave of mass migration into Europe, met by a right-wing backlash across the continent that is still reverberating today. Much of this diaspora has also responded to Assad’s downfall with astonished glee, some rushing to return home.
