Insider Today: Automating away CEOs
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( Dan Defrancesco | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +9 min
Today is always a difficult day, particularly here in New York, as we remember the innocent lives lost 22 years ago. But the group that seems immune to those concerns — CEOs — is primed for being usurped by robots, writes Ed Zitron. Ed's argument is straightforward: CEOs get paid a lot despite not providing much value for their companies. For all the talk of CEOs being transformational leaders full of business ingenuity, many are nothing more than figureheads. off-season has gotten shorter since the regular season was extended to 17 games, and it certainly feels shorter, too, given that once-mundane calendar entries, such as the start of off-season workouts, are now treated like red-carpet events. Yet the down time between last season and this one is still long enough that impactful free-agent signings, un-retirements and rules changes made months ago have receded to the background. happenings to keep in mind as the regular season begins in earnest on Sunday. Eight months after Hamlin, a Buffalo Bills safety, went into cardiac arrest during a “Monday Night Football” game, he made the team’s 53-man roster and will backup starters Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. Buffalo’s Week 1 game is a return to “Monday Night Football,” against the Jets in East Rutherford, N.J.

And because of what he now knows about football injuries, NFL players don’t seem so superhuman anymore. And as another NFL season kicks off this week, these questions haven’t gone away. Long-term degenerative brain diseases such as CTE and Parkinson’s have become huge concerns for football players and their families. “This is one reason why NFL fans can cheer for the most violent-looking tackles imaginable – because they are allowed in the game. “Football fans are like, ‘I love the physicality, but I’m certainly not going to put my child into that,” Wann says.

On his second defensive snap, Hamlin was credited with a solo tackle of running back Evan Hull for no gain, denying the Colts from converting a fourth-and-one at the Bill's 40-yard line. The 25-year-old Hamlin then made tackles on two consecutive plays during the Bills' next defensive series. He was discharged from hospital nine days after his cardiac arrest, and his remarkable recovery captivated the sporting world.

The 18-year-old son of the NBA's all-time leading scorer went into cardiac arrest on Monday and was rushed to hospital where he was placed in intensive care. "I want to thank the countless people sending my family love and prayers," posted James on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Iwuchukwu was revived by team's medical staff and played last season after recovering. It is also reminiscent of an incident in January, when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed from a cardiac arrest during a Monday night NFL game in Cincinnati.

Damar Hamlin's on-field cardiac arrest at a "Monday Night Football" game in January was a moment of national trauma that occurred on live television. Still, his decision to play in the National Football League again after the personal medical trauma he experienced left many wondering how he was able to find the courage to return. And that was kind of like where I overcome my fears the most in my life," said Hamlin at the CNBC CEO event. Hamlin experienced commotio cordis, a rare cardiac condition that occurs when there is blunt impact to the chest at the same moment as the heart is preparing to contract. With prompt CPR and defibrillation, the survival and recovery rates after a commotio cordis episode are greater than 50%, according to the AHA.

CNN —Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was named the 2023 George Halas Award winner by the Professional Football Writers of America on Monday. CPR was performed on Hamlin when he lost his pulse and needed to be revived through resuscitation and defibrillation. In April, Hamlin was cleared to resume football activities after his cardiac arrest was caused by commotio cordis, which can occur when severe trauma to the chest disrupts the heart’s electrical charge and causes dangerous fibrillations. The 25-year-old was cleared to resume football activities last month and said he has been planning to make a comeback to the NFL. “This event was life-changing, but it’s not the end of my story,” Hamlin said in a news conference two months ago.

‘This event was life changing, but it’s not the end of my story,’ Damar Hamlin said on Tuesday. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has been cleared to resume full football activities, general manager Brandon Beane said, marking the final stage of a remarkable recovery after a life-threatening cardiac incident on the field during an NFL game in January. Beane said Hamlin is “just like anyone else who’s coming back from an injury.” Beane added: “He’s in a great headspace to come back and make his return.”
Billy Ball lost his 6-year-old son due to a rare medical condition in January. Facebook and Twitter often took no action when the comments were reported, Ball said. But the father's social media feeds soon devolved into a cesspool of conspiracy theorists baselessly claiming that Ball killed his son by getting him vaccinated for COVID-19. One Facebook user managed to find his private account and commented on a random post that was a few years old. Ball reported the comment and, on March 2, received a message from Facebook support that told him that the comment did not violate "Community Standards."
An anti-vax social-media campaign has targeted the family of a 6-year-old girl who died suddenly. A photo of the child posted on the "Died Suddenly" Twitter blamed her parents for vaccinating her. #DiedSuddenly is a recent iteration of an online conspiracy spreading disinformation about vaccines. The "Died Suddenly" hashtag is centered around a video by the same name, which labels itself as a "documentary film of a generation." Anastasia and her family are only one of the latest targets of the "Died Suddenly" Twitter account, which began posting in October 2022 and has nearly 300,000 followers.

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY SportsPHOENIX, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin accepted the NFLPA's Alan Page Community Service Award on Wednesday, appearing in Phoenix ahead of the Super Bowl a little over a month after suffering cardiac arrest on the field during a game. Hamlin credited his father, who was in attendance for the award ceremony, with inspiring him to serve the community. Hamlin overcame adversity to reach the NFL, losing three friends to gun violence growing up in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. "And for everything that he means to me and us, I think we'd move heaven and earth to get him here."
Stefon Diggs is looking forward to cooling down during the NFL’s off season—and seeking some thrills. “They’ve got this thing in Vegas where you can jump off a building and land on your feet, so I’m probably about to do that,” said Diggs, 29, a starting receiver for the Buffalo Bills. The season, which ended with a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the playoffs, was an unusually trying one for the Bills. On Jan. 2, safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field after making a tackle and suffering cardiac arrest. As a team captain, Diggs had to lead his teammates through many days of fear and uncertainty.
According to season-ending data compiled by the NFL, there were a total of 149 concussions suffered over 271 regular season games, representing a significant increase over 2021. Medical teams performed an average of 1.6 evaluations per game last season, while medical timeouts called by spotters and officials nearly doubled. "We are doing more evaluations than ever and we did change the protocol, becoming more conservative, and we had more medical timeouts and continue to emphasis player self report." While concussions were up the number of overall injuries was down 5.6%. Despite signs of a concussion, the Miami quarterback was allowed to return to the game after passing the league mandated protocol.
Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin spoke publicly for the first time since his heart went silent Jan. 2 in the middle of a Monday Night Football game viewed by millions. It shocked fans when he stayed down after his first-quarter hit on host team Cincinnati's Tee Higgins, and then team health personnel began CPR on the field. The Buffalo Bills player said he was in no rush. A fund-raising account that Hamlin had set up in 2020 to support a toy drive in his home neighborhood in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, was flooded after he was hospitalized. The safety appeared to have his greatest gratitude for children — "to all the kids who sent me letters and heartwarming gifts," Hamlin said.
Damar Hamlin has shared his first public statement after his on-field cardiac arrest on January 2. In an Instagram clip, Hamlin thanked his fans, teammates, and medical staff for their support. He thanked medical first responders who helped "swiftly and skillfully" to save his life, as well as the training staff and the medical staff at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Buffalo General Medical Center. AP Photo/Joshua A. BickelHe told fans their support and love helped him stay positive throughout his recovery. Hamlin also praised those who helped his charity, Chasing M's Foundation, raise over $9 million over the last month.

"It was important for me to wait and speak publicly at the right time, as it was just a lot to process within my own self. Mentally, physically, even spiritually, it's just been a lot to process," Hamlin said in a lengthy Instagram video. "I can't tell you how appreciative I am of all the love, all the support and everything that's just been coming in my way." "My mind is literally blown away from all the support. I don't even have the words to express the gratitude for the amount of support that was given into that," said Hamlin.
The notion that powerful forces control the world in part with the careful deployment of body doubles is a long-standing conspiracy theory. As a medical team worked on him, anti-vaccine activists flooded social media sites with unfounded claims that a vaccine was somehow to blame. Hamlin’s injury came during a surge in anti-vaccine misinformation that attributes any recent death, without evidence, to vaccines. Much of the misinformation came from a handful of serial misinformers, including longtime anti-vaccine activists, conspiracy theorists and podcasters. While still recovering, Hamlin has tweeted a photo of himself in front of a mural painted in his honor., seemingly winking at the conspiracy theory.
When the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals met for a Monday night showdown during the penultimate week of this NFL season, it was one of the most hotly anticipated games on the calendar. Then the game lasted mere minutes before it was suspended and later canceled after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest—resulting in a frightening scene in which Hamln received emergency medical care on the field before being taken in an ambulance to the hospital.
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin joined his teammate on Sunday ahead of their playoff game against Cincinnati Bengals, the same team they were playing when he collapsed on national TV. The Bills posted video of Hamlin in cart inside Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, with the message, "Welcome home." Hamlin was spotted entering the Bills locker room, ahead of the Bills-Bengals playoff game. Buffalo was playing at Cincinnati on "Monday Night Football" on Jan. 2 when Hamlin appeared to make a routine tackle of Bengals receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin got up from the tackle and then appeared to go limp and fall backward.
