Philadelphia CNN —Tech billionaire and Trump ally Elon Musk is trying to move a lawsuit over his $1 million giveaway to voters into federal court, short-circuiting a required appearance Thursday at a Pennsylvania court. Lawyers for the Tesla CEO filed a “motion of removal” in federal court late Wednesday night. The parties will now continue pressing their case in federal court. Foglietta said he’s available later Thursday or Friday if the federal judge sends the case back to state court. Musk endorsed Trump in July and has donated $118 million to his super PAC.

Five people have been charged in Texas, accused of organizing and participating in an illegal cheating scheme that certified more than 200 unqualified teachers and saw the plot’s “kingpin” rake in more than $1 million, prosecutors announced. Investigators noticed a pattern: Numerous teacher certification candidates who previously failed certification exams would drive from faraway Texas cities to the Houston area to take an exam. Then a tip came in that exposed the cheating scheme. He'd pay her about 20% of the $2,500 to allow the cheating, Levine said. “They are going to go over every teacher, I’m sure, and take whatever action they see fit if they believe someone fraudulently obtained a certification,” Levine said.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner is suing Elon Musk and his super PAC to block their million-dollar giveaway to registered voters, seeking to halt the lottery-style stunt that election experts, and the Justice Department, have warned might violate federal law. It’s illegal under federal law to pay someone to vote, but Musk insists he isn’t paying people to register. Musk and America PAC have said that their monetary giveaways are to encourage petition signatures. Still, his contest is only open to those in key battleground state and favors Pennsylvania voters by awarding them all $100 each. An attorney representing America PAC did not respond immediately to a request for comment on the suit.

America PAC did not announce a winner on Wednesday after the warning letter became public but has resumed announcements. CNN —Philadelphia’s district attorney asked a state judge on Monday to shut down tech billionaire Elon Musk’s controversial $1 million giveaway to registered voters, calling it an “illegal lottery scheme.”Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, a Democrat, filed the civil lawsuit against Musk and his pro-Trump group, America PAC. “America PAC and Musk are lulling Philadelphia citizens – and others in the Commonwealth (and other swing states in the upcoming election) – to give up their personal identifying information and make a political pledge in exchange for the chance to win $1 million,” the lawsuit alleges. And it is indisputably an unlawful lottery.”A spokesperson for Musk’s super PAC did not comment on the lawsuit and instead highlighted the group’s latest $1 million winner, announced Monday – a registered voter from Hastings, Michigan. Krasner said his lawsuit was not about state and federal laws that prohibit vote-buying. The US Justice Department has also warned Musk’s super PAC that his giveaway might violate federal laws that criminalize offering cash for voter registration.

Israeli strikes killed 38 people in southern Gaza, according to local officials, and three journalists overnight in southern Lebanon, their networks and local officials said — an attack that drew accusations of war crimes Friday from the country's government. Israeli forces meanwhile besieged and stormed one of the few functioning hospitals in northern Gaza according to local health officials, as they continued an intense assault on that part of the Palestinian enclave. Lebanese Information Minister Ziad Makary accused Israel of intentionally targeting the journalists in an attack he said amounted to a "war crime." “The Israeli enemy waited for the journalists’ night break to betray them in their sleep," Makary said in a post on X. "This is an assassination, after monitoring and tracking, with prior planning and design, as there were 18 journalists present at the location representing seven media institutions.

But even some who managed to escape Israel’s offensive in the north and head farther south toward Gaza City did not survive. The Jerusalem-based human rights group B'Tselem echoed the accusation Tuesday, calling on the international community to "stop the ethnic cleansing of northern Gaza." He also said the "General's plan," a proposal calling for Israel to force the evacuation of residents from northern Gaza through starvation, had not been adopted as Israeli policy. Images released by the IDF of Monday show what it says is a crowd of civilians fleeing the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. Images published by the Israel Defense Forces over the weekend, showing dozens of men being detained in northern Gaza as thousands of people fled the area en masse, have also sparked alarm.

KAZAN, Russia — Almost 700 miles east of Russia's war in Ukraine, the city of Kazan is a safe enough distance for President Vladimir Putin to try and reposition himself as an international ambassador. The countries gathering for the BRICS summit, where Gavrilov is helping to chaperone delegates, share a similar mix of apparently contradictory views. Russia and Iranian protocol teams huddled together in a Kazan hotel Sunday planning the arrival of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian. TEL AVIV — Israeli officials are weighing an Egyptian proposal for a small-scale cease-fire deal with Hamas aimed at trying to build momentum for a larger agreement, an Israeli official told NBC News. Israel’s security cabinet has discussed the Egyptian proposal for a two-week truce in Gaza, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The Egyptian proposal calls for the release of just six Israeli hostages in exchange, the official said. The Egyptian proposal was first reported by Axios. The Israeli military expanded its offensive in Lebanon overnight, striking bank branches across the country to target Hezbollah‘s finances in an assault that sparked panic in Beirut, as Secretary of State Antony Blinken was heading to the Middle East to push for a diplomatic solution to the intensifying regional conflict. But it also comes as Israel prepares an attack against Iran itself. The U.S. and Israel have linked the bank to the Iran-backed militant and political group. An NBC News crew in Beirut heard the blasts ring out as Lebanese national media reported strikes on bank branches in the city's southern suburbs. Meanwhile, video shared on social media and geolocated by NBC News showed buildings on fire and collapsing after apparent air strikes.

Scores of people have been killed in Israeli strikes in northern Gaza this weekend, according to local officials, with the bloodshed in the enclave and continued attacks in Lebanon dimming hopes that the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar might breathe new life into cease-fire talks that have been stalled for months. The Israeli security cabinet is expected to hold a meeting Sunday afternoon to discuss plans for a strike on Iran, an Israeli official told NBC News. In northern Gaza, the local health ministry on Sunday said at least 87 people were killed, with more than 40 others injured, in Israeli strikes on residential areas in Beit Lahia on Saturday. Videos and photos emerging out of northern Gaza showed devastating scenes.
