Hawaii Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke said late on Wednesday that officials were still assessing the damage. The cause of the Maui wildfires had yet to be determined, but the National Weather Service said a mix of dry vegetation, strong winds, and low humidity fueled the fast-moving conflagration. CNN —Help is desperately needed in Hawaii as devastating, fast-moving wildfires burn out of control across the Big Island and Maui. Strong winds associated with Hurricane Dora have fanned the flames, knocking out local communication and destroying homes and historic buildings, including the popular Maui tourist destination Lahaina town. Maui hospitals are overwhelmed with patients suffering burns and smoke inhalation. Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, but local officials warn that the death toll could rise as more information becomes available. Impact Your World will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates with more ways to help.

A wildfire burns on the island of Maui near an intersection in Lahaina, Hawaii, August 9, 2023. Wildfires burned across Hawaii on Wednesday after strong winds from Hurricane Dora and dry conditions ignited blazes and prompted evacuations across the state. The Coast Guard rescued people from the ocean near Lahaina, Maui, as they went into the water to escape a fast-moving fire, NBC News reported, and the historic downtown area surrounding Front Street was partly destroyed, according to Hawaii News Now and other reports. Sylvia Luke issued an emergency proclamation Tuesday that said the fires had burned "hundreds" of acres and forced a number of schools and roads to close. The emergency proclamation said evacuations were underway in the Kohala Ranch, Kula, and Lahaina areas, as the fires threaten to affect the health and welfare of "a substantial number of persons."

Hurricane Dora, a Category 4 storm hundreds of miles south of Hawaii on Tuesday night, was generating high winds on the islands that fueled brush fires and prompted evacuations. Dora was not expected to make landfall in Hawaii, but the storm was causing high winds after dry conditions had created a particularly high risk of wildfires. On Hawaii’s Big Island, winds fueled by Dora prompted evacuations on Tuesday, and crews battled a wildfire along a highway. Those winds also contributed to several wildfires on the island of Maui, including one that was about 1,000 acres by Tuesday afternoon, the Maui County Emergency Management Agency said. Structures caught fire, and several evacuations were underway, it added.

The American Red Cross opened an evacuation center in Maui High School, the county said. Six people had been confirmed killed by the fires, Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said at a press conference. Despite the high winds, they went on a tour to a different part of the island. Hawaii County encompasses the Big Island, which lies south of Maui. Gale warnings remained in effect for all of the Hawaiian islands, with high winds of 45 mph with gusts of 60 mph possible.

On the western side of Maui, some residents fled by swimming into the ocean, where they were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard, Maui County officials said. Others escaped by car, driving past flames in the shadow of the West Maui Mountains. Two evacuation shelters closed because of the encroaching fire, and people inside were sent to new locations, Maui County officials said. The 911 emergency call service in West Maui was down early on Wednesday, and people were told to call the local police department directly instead, Maui County officials said. In Maui County, there were more 12,600 electricity customers without power on Wednesday, according to the tracking site poweroutage.us.

Schreiber, who aspired to a literary career and at one time was romantically involved with the playwright Eugene O’Neill’s oldest son, wrote celebrity profiles and pop psychology pieces for outlets such as Cosmopolitan. And Wilbur, who had treated the actor Roddy McDowall — Case 129 in a book she co-authored about the causes and “treatment” of male homosexuality — craved the kind of broad audience that magazines then attracted. Rather than telekinetic powers, she develops a preternatural ability to assume different personas. Wilbur by any modern metric crossed the line from transference to enmeshment. She crept into her patient’s bed to administer electroshock treatment with an outdated device, doled out Pentothal (a barbiturate then wrongly thought to act as a truth serum) to the point of addiction, and took her on creepy road trips.

MEXICO CITY, March 13 (Reuters) - Mexico's president said on Monday his country is safer than the United States, pushing back against U.S. critics of his security record following a deadly kidnapping this month near the border that claimed the lives of two Americans. The March 3 attack on four Americans in the Mexican city of Matamoros and their subsequent abduction was covered closely by U.S. media and sparked recriminations from politicians in the U.S., particularly Republicans. By the time Mexican authorities found the Americans, two of them were dead. "Mexico is safer than the United States," he told reporters when questioned about the warnings at a news conference. Did you celebrate yourself, or did it feel too good to be true? If you experienced the latter, you were likely dealing with imposter syndrome, "a perceived sense of being a fraud," according to Dora Kamau, a mindfulness and meditation teacher at Headspace. Imposter syndrome is a process that 9% to 82% of people experience, with the rate angling higher for communities of color, a study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found. Thankfully, you can process your emotions and boost your confidence through reciting affirmations to yourself and participating in other empowering practices, says Kamau. Here are a few positive affirmations that Kamau suggests saying to yourself whenever your inner-voice is making you feel small.
Regulators worry about the speed and scale at which banks, insurers and investment firms are moving critical functions and market operations onto a handful of cloud platforms. A glitch at one cloud company could potentially bring down services across many financial firms, regulators have said. "Thanks to the harmonised legal requirements which we adopted today, our financial sector will be better able to continue to function at all times," Stanjura said. The requirements will apply to financial firms and "critical" third parties supplying cloud based services. "If a large-scale attack on the European financial sector is launched, we will be prepared for it," Stanjura said.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which will be released nationwide Friday, is already on track to become a critical success. It offers a poignant and powerful tribute to the film’s original Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman, who died in August 2020 from colon cancer. I still feel there’s a long way to go.”Studies have shown that it’s important for children to see superheroes that look like them. Gurira, who said she never had anything like “Black Panther” growing up, said experiencing this film as an adult “sparked a hunger” in her as a creative. Gurira said it’s imperative that Black creatives continue to push for change in the film industry so movies like “Black Panther” can become the norm.
Nov 8 (Reuters) - The highly anticipated sequel to Disney's “Black Panther,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” has received glowing reviews from the majority of critics. The film, which arrives in theaters on Friday, scored a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with only five out of 81 critics rating the film as rotten. There is a new Black Panther, and they will figure into the future of this universe. “'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' is by far the best film in phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The sad reality is that the show must go on, and without (Chadwick Boseman), it’s just more of the same.
CNN —In the parlance of Olympic diving – a good analogy for blockbuster movie-making – “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” faced an inordinate degree of difficulty, addressing the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman. A scene from "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." With other Marvel stalwarts having exited the universe post-“Endgame,” “Black Panther” appeared poised to become a focal point going forward. Whether “Wakanda Forever” can bridge that gap and position Marvel to fill that void remains to be seen. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” premieres November 11 in US theaters.
In August, scientists and adventurers found camera gear abandoned by Brad Washburn, an American explorer, in 1937. By tracing the camera's path, scientists could learn how the glacier has changed over eight decades. "They essentially needed help to figure out how the glacier is moving and what's the best way of finding the cache," Medrzycka told Insider. "It was an amazing feeling, and I felt relief that I didn't fail at finding the cache," Medrzycka said, adding, "It was an epic moment for everyone." The team also retrieved two other cameras, including a DeVry "Lunchbox" model, with film still loaded inside.
LOS ANGELES, Oct 27 (Reuters) - The stars of the highly-anticipated sequel to Marvel’s "Black Panther" walked the red carpet in Hollywood on Wednesday night at the "Wakanda Forever" world premiere but there was one name hugely missed, their late co-star Chadwick Boseman. "But we had to just be strong, to follow through on the story and it got emotional at times. “Black Panther”, in which Boseman played the king of the fictional African land of Wakanda, became a global hit and was hailed as a milestone for racial diversity in Hollywood. "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" sees the protagonists working once again with the Dora Milaje, an elite group of female warriors, as they fight to protect their nation following the king's death. It sees actors Angela Bassett and Danai Gurira reprise their roles as T'Challa's mother Ramonda and Dora Milaje head Okoye, respectively, as well as the arrival of Michaela Coel as Aneka, a Dora Milaje warrior.
MEXICO CITY — Families of four well-known opposition figures jailed in Nicaragua fear for their relatives’ lives because of bad conditions at the infamous El Chipote prison. Among the prisoners is former Sandinista rebel commander Dora María Téllez, 65. “We fear that they may die inside that torture center,” the relatives of Téllez and three other inmates said in a statement Monday. They said prison authorities have threatened not to give the inmates bottles of drinking water that relatives supply themselves. Hugo Torres, a former Sandinista guerrilla leader who once led a raid that helped free then rebel Ortega from prison, died while awaiting trial.
