LUCKNOW, India, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has shaken off a hamstring problem and is available for their World Cup meeting with South Africa on his familiar hunting ground of Lucknow, captain Pat Cummins said on Wednesday. "He's fit so yeah, we'll announce a team tomorrow but it's a ground he knows pretty well," Cummins told reporters. The wicket looks really good so yeah, he's someone we'll look at pretty closely." The five-times champions will be wary of South Africa, who smashed 428-5 in their opening win over Sri Lanka. "I haven't had a look at it today, but last night it looked really good, really even.

Australia picked up their first 50-overs title in 1987 before winning three in a row from 1999 to 2007. "I think we had a really strong run in the early 2000s," Cummins told reporters on Wednesday. With their fiery attack, formidable batting and electric fielding, Australia set the benchmark in 50-overs cricket during that era but reigning champions England have replaced them as the dominant limited-overs side, also winning the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. Cummins, in his first World Cup as Australia captain, is one of several frontline players returning from injuries but the 30-year-old says Australia have what it takes to win in India -- an abundance of all-rounders. Australia will begin their World Cup campaign against hosts India in Chennai on Sunday.

Many Americans, even once-ardent proponents of globalization, have soured on trade with China. But there is a growing danger that as the United States tries to address its difficulties with China, it will pull back too far, severing economic ties that benefit American families and contribute to global peace and prosperity. Soybean farmers in the Upper Midwest sold a record $16.4 billion of their beans to China, mostly for pig feed. Hundreds of millions of Chinese have come out of poverty thanks to global trade, and have become consumers of U.S. goods and services. Amid the harsh talk, the dollar value of American trade with China — Americans buying Chinese products and the Chinese buying American products — rose to a record in 2022.

Pace guns to propel Australia at World Cup: Hazlewood

MELBOURNE, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Australia will rely on their full complement of specialist pace bowlers to set the tone at the World Cup rather than mix and match with all-rounders, Josh Hazlewood said. Hazlewood said Australia were likely to revert to type when captain Cummins and Starc rejoined the squad for the final warm-up series against India in the lead-up to the World Cup, which starts next month. "With Mitch and Pat coming in hopefully for the India series before the World Cup, there's still a lot of games to go, no doubt the quicks will play a huge part not only here but at the World Cup as well." Hazlewood said the South Africa series had been a great opportunity to build depth and create competition in the squad. "We're ticking along nicely, I think, and it's just about keeping building towards the World Cup."

BLOEMFONTEIN, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Fast bowler Michael Neser will return to the country of his birth to shore up Australia's pace attack in the one day international series in South Africa after more injuries hit the team. Left hand quick Spencer Johnson, who was added to the ODI squad, has now sustained a hamstring injury, Cricket Australia (CA) said on Saturday. Johnson will remain in South Africa and travel with rest of the white-ball squad to India later this month, added the CA statement. South Africa on Saturday added all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo to their squad as cover for Sisanda Magala, who is recovering from an acute knee injury. Magala has made positive progress in his recovery and will continue his build-up towards contention for selection during this series, said a statement from Cricket South Africa.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) did not announce that central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) must be “implanted under your skin” for an individual to participate in society, as claimed in social media posts. The claim stems from an article published on July 10 by the People’s Voice website with the headline: “WEF Says CBDCs Must Be ‘Implanted Under Your Skin’ if You Want To Participate in Society" (ghostarchive.org/archive/QjVJW). The WEF did publish a white paper in June 2023 on the implementation of CBDCs, but it contains no mention of a need for people to implant CBDCs to engage in society (here). In the video, Werner criticises the concept of CBDCs, and questions at the end of the interviews what CBDCs will look like in the future. There is no evidence that the WEF announced CBDCs must be implanted into an individual’s skin for them to participate in society and the article making that claim cites an economist who is not affiliated with WEF.

The law – proposed and approved by Portugal’s ruling PS party – seeks to address the housing crisis in Portugal. The new law’s resolutions could potentially have far-reaching effects on those running alojamento local (AL) properties – including Portugal’s world-renowned hostels. AL properties outside of low-density areas will also see their current property taxes increase, and be subject to a new tax starting at 15%, known as CEAL. The new legislation threatens the future of all hostels in Portugal, says Miguel Santos, board member at the Associação Hostels de Portugal (AHdP) and owner of a Lisbon hostel. Opinion | How to Treat Loneliness (and Should We?)
  + stars: | 2023-07-29 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “If Loneliness Is an Epidemic, How Do We Treat It?,” by Eleanor Cummins and Andrew Zaleski (Opinion guest essay, July 16):I found your guest essay a disservice to “the lonely.” Instead of trying to cure loneliness, why not accept it as part of the human condition? Why make people feel bad, inferior or ill? In the past couple of years I have come to terms with my loneliness. I had a married friend who made me feel bad about being single with awkward questions like “Don’t you want to settle down with a partner?” This of course made me mad, embarrassed or guilty. I wish we could all agree that loneliness is just a state of the human condition, accept it and not perpetuate the negative feelings that we have imbued it with.

“Addressing the crisis of loneliness and isolation is one of our generation’s greatest challenges,” wrote Surgeon General Vivek Murthy in The Times in April, discussing a national framework for rebuilding social connection to combat what he called an “epidemic” of loneliness. If loneliness is an epidemic, how do you treat it? This calls to mind a trip to the pharmacy to pick up a bottle of pills, but treating loneliness the same way doctors treat high cholesterol isn’t exactly the idea here. Even Dr. Cacioppo, who has dedicated her life to studying human connection, including pharmaceutical solutions for loneliness, questions the value of medicalizing it. “We need to be accountable for the well-being of our friends and teammates and others.”Declaring loneliness an epidemic first requires an understanding of what loneliness is and how it works in the brain.

Newsom said "today truck manufacturers join our urgent efforts to slash air pollution, showing the rest of the country that we can both cut dangerous pollution and build the economy of the future." The incident, whilst not against the laws of cricket, divided many as to whether it went against the spirit of cricket, including many inside Lord’s. The Long Room is one of sport’s most unique settings; a room filled with MCC members through which players of both teams have to travel to reach the playing area from their respective dressing rooms. The dismissal triggered long and loud booing from the Lord's crowd and saw Australian players verbally abused by MCC members in the stadium's usually staid Long Room. With England eventually losing by 43 runs to trail 2-0 in the five-test series, McCullum made it clear the stumping had strained relations. Lord's Cricket Ground, London CNN —Australia took a commanding 2-0 lead in this year’s Ashes Series after winning an ill-tempered Test match against England on Sunday. Speaking on BBC’s Test Match Special, England captain Ben Stokes said that he would have withdrawn the appeal if he was in the position of Australian captain Pat Cummins. The majority of England fans inside the ground were left furious by the decision and started vociferously chanting at and booing the Australian players.
