How to join a board of directors

NEW YORK, May 18 (Reuters) - When Hayley Woodin was thinking of giving back to the community while taking her career to the next level, one option stood out: serving on a board of directors. The Catch-22 is that companies want directors with board experience to fill board seats. Before you reach that stage, you will likely start on a volunteer board, as Hayley Woodin did. To find such opportunities, "often local boards of trade will host events designed to pair those looking for board experience, with organizations looking for board members," Woodin said. "If an organization is looking to bring someone onto their board, what is the first thing they are going to do?
Yotam Ottolenghi Celebrates Spring With Asparagus

In her cookbook “Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat,” Samin Nosrat reduces two cups of heavy cream — add olive oil and Parmesan in very generous amounts — in an asparagus-and-mint pasta. Alice B. Toklas tossed her asparagus in melted butter and heavy cream. But as she served it, she whipped up some more heavy cream, seasoned with salt and pepper, to ward off any false sense of restraint. You can take a minimalist approach and roast your asparagus spears with some oil and salt. I also love Alice Waters’s classic salad of raw, thinly shaved asparagus with vinaigrette and Parmesan.
Why Monumental Cream Puff Towers Are on the Rise

THE CHEF MOST often credited with inventing the croquembouche, the French-born confection that towers haughtily over any table it graces, was, unsurprisingly, an architecture enthusiast. He’d spend his afternoons in the national library across the street, mesmerized by images of architectural marvels. But it was the croquembouche in particular — a conical tower typically rising several feet high and constructed out of cream puffs (a.k.a. choux à la crème) bound together with caramel — that became a staple of French wedding banquets and, eventually, his legacy. Its name translated as “crunch in the mouth,” the pastry, when made properly, should deliver a gratifying crackle with every bite.
THE EDEN TEST, by Adam SternberghA woman surprises her husband with a weeklong couples’ retreat in “The Eden Test,” Adam Sternbergh’s new thriller. Threat shimmers around their isolated cabin, though one suspects that nothing would force them to endure anything more painful than a week of “working on the relationship.”On their first date, three years earlier, Daisy licked a smudge of crème brûlée off Craig’s chin, a mischievous gesture that bound them together. They spent weekends together eating croissants and reading the paper, “its sections unfurled all around them like blueprints for some brazen upcoming heist.” “The Eden Test” shows how a couple in love can seem like a two-person army, fugitives from the outside world. As the novel’s epigraph, from Adam Phillips, puts it, “A couple is a conspiracy in search of a crime.”Now, Daisy and Craig appear less like co-conspirators than adversaries. The denim overalls that Craig used to strip off Daisy have become “those [expletive] overalls she always wears.” And Daisy is cleareyed about Craig’s failings, from his infidelities to his pretension about restaurants, “as though he’d studied in the finest culinary schools of Europe, rather than being just another dude in Brooklyn with a credit card and a subscription to Bon Appétit.” Craig is preparing to leave her for his mistress, and Daisy hasn’t been entirely honest with him, either.
Longtime investor and trader Jim Lebenthal said he's favoring big banks over small lenders heading into the earnings season. "The big banks should have been beneficiaries of what went on last month with Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, meaning they got deposit inflows from the smaller banks," Lebenthal said. "I think we should favor the big banks over the smaller banks just because of their overall strength." Are there further deposit outflows not just from small banks to big banks, but from all banks to money market funds?" The investor called JPMorgan the "creme de la creme" in the banking system and said he owns Citigroup as a value and turnaround play.

It’s safe to say many people eat Oreos the same way. They twist them apart, then consume the cookie as two separate creme-covered wafers. Yet more than a century after the Oreo’s inception, many connoisseurs haven’t solved a frustrating problem: how to twist it so both wafers end up with filling on them.
Quality stocks are about to outperform this year, according to Bank of America. Against such a backdrop, equity strategist Savita Subramanian at Bank of America advised investors to own high quality stocks — specifically stocks with a rated high quality by S & P. A basket of such stocks outperformed low quality stocks by 1.2% in February. "Tailwinds for Low Quality from fiscal and monetary stimulus are now over, and we recommend owning High Quality stocks," she added. To be sure, Subramanian said that while high quality shares are still lagging low quality shares year-to-date, the bank anticipates the economy entering a downturn, during which quality factors have typically outperformed. With this in mind, CNBC screened for stocks in the S & P 500 that had the highest quality rating of A+ as determined by S & P Global Market Intelligence.

TikTok's secret sauce is its ability to keep users on the platform, and without sacrificing its core, Instagram won't be able to compete. That's because on TikTok, every video a creator makes has to outperform every other TikTok video. Victim of its own successUnlike TikTok, Instagram has long been seen as a secure place on which to build a digital following. A year ago, when the researcher Valdovinos Kaye was interviewing TikTok creators for his book, he found that they desperately sought to transport their audiences over to Instagram. Rather than copying TikTok's success, Instagram might need to focus on what separates it from the pack.
