Around 100 demonstrators were present on the prison grounds protesting capital punishment and Williams’ execution, Pojmann said. Williams’ team filed a clemency petition to the US Supreme Court last week, noting Missouri’s previous governor had postponed Williams’ execution indefinitely amid questions about the integrity of Williams’ trial. Eric Greitens previously halted Williams’ execution and formed a board to investigate his case and determine whether he should be granted clemency. “The Board investigated Williams’ case for the next six years — until Governor Michael Parson abruptly terminated the process,” Williams’ attorneys wrote. “The Governor’s actions have violated Williams’ constitutional rights and created an exceptionally urgent need for the Court’s attention,” Williams’ attorneys said in court documents.

His new home is a notorious federal jail in New York City known for extreme violence and abominable medical care. Still, the conditions are horrid across the facility, according to interviews with more than a half-dozen defense lawyers and a review of court documents. “The agency as a whole has failed to assist MDC Brooklyn with the staffing crisis, hence allowing MDC Brooklyn to fail,” the union head, Rhonda Barnwell, wrote in a memo to Bureau of Prisons officials in June 2023. "That is why, earlier this year, the director appointed an Urgent Action Team to take a holistic look at the challenges at MDC Brooklyn," the spokesman added. The Kansas Attorney General’s Office said in a statement Friday that it was Hanks’ admission in new interviews that allowed authorities to charge him in 2022, when he was living in Burden, Kansas. The sheriff said they believe it is the oldest cold case in Kansas to be solved and result in a conviction. In his interviews, Hanks admitted to killing Walter, the attorney general’s office said. “Let’s have a good debate,” Harris said. The wife of a California inmate will receive $5.6 million after being sexually violated during a strip search when she tried to visit her husband in prison, her attorneys said Monday. Of the $5.6 million settlement, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will pay $3.6 million and the rest will be paid by the other defendants, which include two correctional officers, a doctor, and the Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley hospital. Despite no contraband being found in any of her belongings or her body, Cardenas was denied her visit with her husband. California prisons have faced an ongoing problem of sexual abuse and misconduct, with the the U.S. Justice Department announcing it had opened an investigation into allegations that correctional officers systematically sexually abused incarcerated women at two state-run California prisons. Earlier this year the federal Bureau of Prisons announced it will close a women’s prison in Northern California known as the “rape club” after an Associated Press investigation exposed rampant sexual abuse by correctional officers.

Disgraced former South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh scored a big legal win last week after the South Carolina Supreme Court agreed to hear his appeal for a new murder trial. Murdaugh’s lawyer, however, is not worried and is focused on their appellant cases. Last week, the state Supreme Court agreed to hear Murdaugh’s state appeal for a new murder trial based on allegations that a court clerk tampered with the jury that convicted him. The initial application from Lykos presented positive data from two late-stage clinical trials that used MDMA in combination with talk therapy to treat PTSD. The advisers said it was also difficult to parse how much the accompanying talk therapy — an area that the FDA does not regulate — contributed to outcomes. Advocates for the treatment, including some veterans groups, said they were “incredibly disappointed” by the FDA decision. Dozens of clinical trials involving psychedelics are in various stages, and additional scrutiny can help strengthen the findings and build confidence. Psychopharmacology did not allow the study authors to publish a correction with data that excluded findings from one study site, said Allison Feduccia, an author in all three retracted studies.

Wealthy investors and family offices shied away from stocks leading up to market swings this week, but many saw the drop in prices as an opportunity for tax savings and estate planning, according to wealth advisors. When stocks tumbled Monday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq down 3%, wealthy investors neither panicked nor jumped in to buy, according to several advisors. The drop in prices last Friday and Monday also offered a chance for wealthy investors to take advantage of tax benefits and gift strategies. With the gift and estate exemption amount scheduled to expire at the end of next year, many wealthy investors are working to give away the maximum before the expiration. “Most family offices are so invested in alternatives, hedge funds, PE and real estate, that they aren’t moving their investments around anyway,” said Geoffrey von Kuhn, an advisor to several of the nation’s largest family offices.

The recent unwinding of the yen "carry trade" could remain a long-term headwind amid already turbulent markets. JPY= YTD mountain The Japanese yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar marked the unwinding of the so-called carry trade. "There's still quite a significant yen short position out there," Osborne said. He estimates that there is still a roughly $15 billion yen short position through July 30, still to be covered. In other words, that short position could drive more strength in the yen as that position is covered.

A sharp sell-off in 2024's winning tech giants has left investors wondering whether it's safe to scoop up the pummeled shares. At one point during Monday's rout, the "Magnificent Seven" stocks combined had lost nearly $1 trillion in value , later recovering some of the losses. To be sure, some investors on Wall Street are pumping the brakes after Monday's sell-off, cautioning others to hold off on buying the dip just yet. Many investors viewed the sell-off as a necessary pullback in what's been a seemingly endless uptrend in the market. Like many investors, he also views Monday's pullback as a small blip in the AI trade's record run.

Goldman Sachs said the decline in the S&P 500 is historically a good buying opportunity for investors. AdvertisementThe S&P 500's 6% decline over the past three days represents a great buying opportunity for investors, according to a note from Goldman Sachs strategist David Kostin. However, despite the decline, the S&P 500 is still up nearly 10% year-to-date and the sell-off sparked a reset in valuations, with the index's forward price-to-earnings multiple falling to 20x. Advertisement"Historical experience shows that investors typically profit when buying the S&P 500 index following a 5% sell-off," Kostin said. The crux of whether a 10% correction in the S&P 500 represents a solid buying opportunity for investors is whether the economy is on the verge of a recession.

We saw another EMA crossover in May, signaling the end of the pullback and the start of a new bull run. July 2023 : Although the majority of the current correction unfolded in August, the EMA crossover signal had already appeared in July. For example, in May 2023, waiting for the EMA crossover would have meant missing out on 4.6% of the move. The trade setup: QQQ bull call spread To take a bullish trade on QQQ, I will be using a trade structure called a "bull call spread." U.S. stocks fell sharply Monday as part of a global selloff fueled by mounting recession fears among investors. Further roiling global markets is unusual currency trading out of Japan. The S&P 500 — a measure of the broad U.S. stock market — was down about 2% in early trading, putting it 7.5% below the index's all-time high close on July 16. Prepare for a new high-volatility market regime
  + stars: | 2024-08-05 | by ( Katie Stockton | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +8 min
A spike in the VIX of this magnitude has not occurred since 2020, when the COVID-19 related decline in the S & P 500 was maturing. We believe another high-volatility regime is upon us, with the prolonged low-volatility regime that preceded it coming to an abrupt halt. If our long-term trend following measures were to deteriorate behind the S & P 500, we would be more inclined to reduce exposure. A rebound in the S & P 500 (i.e., a VIX pullback) can be used to hedge partial exposure from a top-down perspective. Federal court records show that Joshua Conner Jones entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors regarding the treatment of two inmates at the Walker County jail. Jones agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to deprive an inmate of their rights related to the 2023 death of Tony Mitchell.
