While Kamala Harris made history, Vivek Ramaswamy became a household name, and Usha Vance debuted to a tepid national audience, many everyday South Asian Americans were experiencing something altogether different. As these political leaders saw their profiles rise, everyday South Asian Americans experienced increased racism, with anti-South Asian posts online doubling over the campaign season, a new report found. Threats of violence against Asian Americans are up 17% from the baseline, and a vast majority of those threats were directed at South Asian Americans, the data revealed. Still, his Indian American identity has drawn fire. “South Asians, we don’t voice, we don’t make noise, we just silently are suffering,” she said.

Extraordinary circumstances have degraded 40% of global land iStockCertain places around the world are already experiencing this at an accelerated rate. After a campaign featuring promises to slash landmark climate legislation, and a first term record that included pulling the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement, President-elect Donald Trump's win casts a shadow of doubt over the world of global climate policy. As an isolationist, Trump-led American foreign policy cedes global leadership on the issue, an increasingly willing China can assume the spot instead. Ceding global climate leadership to China "would be a mistake"China is looking to "play a more proactive role internationally on climate change," said Joanna Lewis, an associate professor at Georgetown University and expert in international climate policy. But "it would be a mistake for the United States to completely cede not just [its] leadership role on climate change. But the development of low carbon technologies, that's really the area that has been particularly competitive between China and the United States," said Lewis.

Trump's transition team aims to kill Biden EV tax credit: Reuters

Win Mcnamee | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesPresident-elect Donald Trump's transition team is planning to kill the $7,500 consumer tax credit for electric-vehicle purchases as part of broader tax-reform legislation, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Ending the tax credit could have grave implications for an already stalling U.S. EV transition. Representatives with the Trump transition and Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The alliance last month in an Oct. 15 letter urged Congress to retain the EV tax credits, calling them "critical to cementing the U.S. as a global leader in the future of automotive technology and manufacturing." Trump's energy transition team views the consumer EV credit as an easy target, believing that eliminating it would get broad consensus in a Republican-controlled Congress as part of a larger tax-reform bill.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., plans to file a resolution in the House on Thursday that would express support for the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution, which sets the term limits for the president. However, he could introduce it as a privileged resolution to force Republicans to vote on the matter. The resolution, which NBC News obtained Wednesday, reaffirms that the 22nd Amendment "applies to two terms in the aggregate as President of the United States" and reaffirms that it "applies to President-elect Trump." The resolution lists a number of instances in which Trump has joked or floated the idea of serving longer than two terms in the White House or being a dictator. To amend the Constitution and modify term limits for president, both the House and the Senate would need to approve amendment language by two-thirds votes.

Former Vice President Mike Pence was, for most of their four years together, a loyal partner who helped smooth Trump’s dealings with establishment Republicans and evangelical conservatives. “It compresses things,” said Joel Goldstein, a vice presidential scholar and professor emeritus at Saint Louis University. At one point, polling showed him to be one of the least-liked vice presidential candidates over the last 30 years. And during his own presidency, Biden tasked Vice President Kamala Harris with the tough-to-define and tough-to-evaluate assignment of tackling the root causes of migration from Mexico and Central America. Republicans will keep control of the House of Representatives, NBC News projected Wednesday. Going into the election, House Republicans aimed to expand their razor-thin majority of 220 seats, compared to the 212 held by Democrats. That threadbare GOP majority gave Democrats high hopes to flip the chamber. Despite the massive fundraising effort, Democrats failed to gain the 218 seats needed for control of the House. Miller was a powerful White House aide in Trump’s first term, authoring much of his most fiery scripted rhetoric as a speechwriter. Yet despite these draconian visions, there’s uncertainty about how far Trump will go in his deportation program and whether it matches his dystopian speeches. Many Democrats and Republicans could agree on Trump’s vow to start by deporting criminal undocumented migrants — the easiest part of his plan. Trump’s critics and vulnerable undocumented migrants, however, will find little in the president-elect’s new staff picks to offer them comfort. In every incoming presidential administration, staffing is important and provides ideological clues to how a White House will act.
