Albuquerque, New Mexico AP —Jurors in New Mexico have awarded a man more than $412 million in a medical malpractice case that involved a men’s health clinic that operates in several states. The man’s attorneys celebrated Monday’s verdict, saying they are hopeful it will prevent other men from falling victim to a scheme that involved fraud and what they described as dangerous penile injections. That is a very egregious breach of their fiduciary duty,” said Lori Bencoe, one of the lawyers who represented the plaintiff. The clinic is accused of misdiagnosing him and unnecessarily treating him with “invasive erectile dysfunction shots” that caused irreversible damage. According to court records, jurors found that fraudulent and negligent conduct by the defendants resulted in damages to the plaintiff.

President-elect Donald Trump's proposed steep tariffs on imports could create winners in the stock market — particularly among companies that help businesses manage their supply chains, according to Redburn Atlantic. The shares of all these global companies are traded in the U.S. and Europe. Trump has proposed tariffs of 25% on all products from Mexico and Canada, and additional tariffs on goods from China. Kinaxis Kinaxis, which helps companies plan their supply chains using digital replicas of physical operations, could also benefit, according to Redburn Atlantic. WiseTech Global WiseTech offers a "high-growth profile" investment opportunity that will benefit from the tariff trend, according to Redburn Atlantic.

Federal ethics laws require those senior government jobs in the Cabinet and beyond to divest their individual stock holdings, lest anyone be tempted to abuse their position of power to juice their personal investments. “The rule of thumb is, recuse or divest,” said Jordan Libowitz, vice president for communications at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW. “The more complex your assets are, the harder it can be to divest from them. Although the president isn’t subject to conflict of interest laws, most presidents have adhered to them anyway to avoid any appearance of impropriety. Given Trump’s own disregard for ethics rules, it’s not clear how, or even whether, his Justice Department would enforce the criminal conflict of interest laws that his Cabinet picks are subject to.

A judge on Wednesday found New York City in contempt for failing to staunch violence and brutality at its jails, a scathing ruling that puts the troubled Rikers Island jail complex on the verge of a federal takeover. It would not involve a takeover by the Justice Department, nor would the city’s jails become part of the federal Bureau of Prisons. Nineteen people died in custody at Rikers Island in 2022. There has been “no substantial reduction in the risk of harm currently facing those who live and work in the Rikers Island jails,” the judge wrote. Under a plan approved by the city council in 2019, New York City is legally required to shutter Rikers Island and replace it with four smaller and more modern jails by 2027.

On Tuesday, Trump’s transition team signed an agreement with the White House after months of postponing the traditional transition process – a delay that Biden officials warned could undermine an orderly transfer of power and pose national security risks. In a statement announcing the agreement, the Trump transition said it will use its own security and information systems, its own office spaces and maintain its own ethics plan. The transition team said its ethics plan will be posted online in compliance with federal law. Several of Trump’s picks have vast personal fortunes and deep ties to the private sector. Trump’s transition team has so far relied instead on internal vetting.

After I had a child of my own, I decided to set boundaries around how much money I send to relatives back home. I have several friends in the US from Senegal who send money home monthly. I know people in other cultures send money back home, but Senegalese culture is particularly focused on not getting other people's hopes down. I still send the monthly money to my grandma's household, but for other things, I do a critical case-by-case analysis of whether the payment is necessary.

CNN —Airlines have pocketed billions of dollars in so-called “junk fees” by charging customers extra to select a seat or to carry on bags, according to a Senate subcommittee report published on Tuesday. The report said some airlines have even paid workers cash incentives to identify customers trying to avoid fees for carry-on bags. The report, from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said that in 2023, United Airlines charged as much as $319 for an extra legroom seat, Spirit Airlines charged as much as $299, Delta Air Lines charged as much as $264, Frontier Airlines charged $141 and American Airlines charged as much as $140. “The subcommittee clearly lacks appreciation for the fact that air travel today is democratized, allowing Americans across all income levels to fly. Today, because of the revolution in air travel, nearly ninety percent of Americans have flown.

IN A TENSE moment midway through Edward Berger’s recent movie “Conclave,” a pulpy thriller about the process of selecting a new pope, Isabella Rossellini, playing a nun named Sister Agnes, enters a room full of cardinals from around the world. After asking permission to speak, Sister Agnes discreetly delivers a piece of information that will upend the papal election and expose some of the most powerful figures in the Roman Catholic Church to public, career-ending humiliation. For the rest of the film, Sister Agnes never says another word. For much of film history, women spoke less than men simply because their characters were seldom the story’s focus. The “strong, silent type” of westerns and detective stories was made strong by his silence, while female characters were typically weakened by theirs.

That would include payments services from Apple, Google and Amazon, as well as fintech firms including PayPal and Block and peer-to-peer services Venmo and Zelle. While the CFPB already had some authority over digital payment companies because of its oversight of electronic fund transfers, the new rule allows it to treat tech companies more like banks. “Digital payments have gone from novelty to necessity and our oversight must reflect this reality,” said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra. The CFPB said the rule will take effect 30 days after its publication in the Federal Register.
