None of that sounds like it should bode very well for stocks, but the S&P 500, a measure of the broad U.S. stock market, has returned about 16% so far in 2024. This has been even the bull's dream of a year," says Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at the Carson Group. Indeed, the likes of Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon.com and Alphabet have all enjoyed returns over the past year that have vastly outgained the broad market. All 11 S&P 500 sectors sport positive returns year-to-date, with six featuring double-digit returns. That could "loosen up the gears" in what has been a stubborn housing market and should encourage business investment — both good signs for the broader market, he says.

Just about everyone in the investing world, it seems, is bullish on artificial intelligence over the long term. In a recent note, researchers from the BlackRock Investment Institute said AI could usher in a transformation on par with the Industrial Revolution. Chipmaker Nvidia, seen as the leading player in the AI revolution, is up more than 175% over the past 12 months. All told, companies in the tech and communication services sectors — the ones investing most heavily in AI — make up about 44% of the S&P 500. "I don't think anyone would tell you that AI is not a generational investment theme," he says.

Tech and communication services companies have been dominating share buyback activity within the S & P 500 this year, according to Jill Carey Hall, Bank of America's equity and quantitative strategist. Earlier this year, Apple announced a massive $110 billion share buyback program, while Alphabet authorized a $70 billion repurchase . Buyback fans include legendary investor Warren Buffett, as Berkshire Hathaway spent $2.6 billion in the first quarter of 2024 to repurchase shares. Scott Wren, a senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, recently noted that market breadth is abnormally narrow. He found that the five best performers in the S&P 500 accounted for nearly three-fifths of its exceptional 10.6% year-to-date gain through May 31. That fate will soon apply to the S&P 500, Wren warned. Such a sell-off would take the S&P 500 below 5,000 for the first time since April. "And it's tough to be patient when the S&P 500 set a bunch of all-time high records."

New York CNN —Nvidia’s eye-popping gains this year have helped propel the stock market to repeated record highs. Can Nvidia’s blockbuster gains continue, and what does its outsized market cap mean for the stock rally? Now everyone says, “the market is dependent on Nvidia’s earnings.” You’re going to see a kind of a shift in market cap over the years. “These lower mortgage rates coupled with the gradually improving housing supply bodes well for the housing market.”Still, mortgage rates remain higher than anything seen in the decade before 2022, the year the Federal Reserve began to raise interest rates to combat inflation. The Fed doesn’t directly set mortgage rates but its actions do influence them through the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield, which moves in anticipation of the Fed’s policy moves.

Those highly appreciated positions can change the risk profile of your portfolio, particularly if it's been a long time since you last rebalanced. Managing the tax hit Trimming heavily appreciated positions in a portfolio that's held in a taxable account may come with a capital gains hit. One potential way to mitigate the tax is to use realized losses to offset those capital gains. In a year when losses exceed capital gains, investors can apply up to $3,000 of those losses to offset ordinary income and then carry over the remainder. Normally, these holdings would be the ones subject to the heftiest capital gains taxes if they were sold.
