Although it did not name either Israel, Lebanon or Hezbollah, the statement which was read by Swiss U.N. Vehicles from the UNFIL force patrol in Marjayoun in southern Lebanon on Saturday. In the backdrop of its invasion of Lebanon, Israel is also weighing up its response to the missile barrage launched by Iran earlier this month, sparking fears that a massive retaliation could stoke a wider regional conflict. The United States announced it is sending an advanced anti-missile system and a number of troops to Israel, deepening America's involvement in the spiraling conflict as the region readies for Israeli retaliatory strikes against Iran. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, known as THAAD, usually requires about 100 troops to operate, and has six truck mounted launchers, with eight interceptors on each launcher, as well as a powerful radar. Retired Brigadier General Zvika Haimovich, former head of the Israeli Air Defense, said Israel expected even an bigger barrage of missiles from Iran in "the next phase," after Tehran fired more than 180 missiles at Israel on Oct 1. But the presence of U.S. equipment and troops inside Israel would deepen the nation's involvement in the crisis. The arrival of THAAD and U.S. support might ease the burden on Israel's defense system, but Israel's latest reliance on its allies for protection may also speak to the cracks in its often impenetrable armor.

Projections from ORF public television based on exit polls suggest that the pro-Russia, anti-immigration Freedom Party, or FPÖ, has finished first, with 29.1% of the vote. It appears to have knocked the ruling conservative Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP), or Austrian People’s Party, into second place, with 26.2% of the vote. But it has fallen far short of an absolute majority in the tight election and will need help to form a stable government. The sirens were the first in months, and included Israel's Ben Gurion international airport in Tel Aviv, where local media showed footage of people racing to shelters. Five years ago, while playing for the Copper Hills High School football team, Thompson met Marcel Malanga, the son of Christian Malanga. He proclaimed himself president of the United Congolese Party and railed against what he saw as vast government corruption in the DRC. On May 19, he assembled a ragtag band of a few dozen paramilitaries, leading them in an extraordinarily ambitious yet ultimately amateurish attempt to unseat Congolese president Felix Tshisekedi. Among them were Thompson, Malanga's son Marcel, and 36-year-old Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun, a convicted drug trafficker from Maryland. Videos taken in Kinshasa after the aborted coup showed Thompson being hit with the butt of a rifle by security forces.

Here’s what we know – and don’t – about China’s space plane. The term “space plane” often evokes NASA’s Space Shuttle, which flew 135 missions from 1981 to 2011, carrying astronauts into orbit and helping to construct the International Space Station. Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesWhat do we know about China’s space plane program? China’s space plane development comes as a growing number of countries are paying attention to the deepening connections between security on Earth and in space – and vying for so-called counterspace technologies with the potential to disrupt or even destroy adversaries’ assets in space. But observers have also raised questions about the activities of the space plane, including its own deployment of multiple small satellites.

It was a stunning denouement for the self-proclaimed appointed son of God, a Filipino evangelist preacher who had millions of followers and influence at the highest levels of government but was wanted by Philippine authorities and the FBI on charges of human trafficking and sexual abuse. That changed in March, when a Philippine court ordered the arrest of Quiboloy and several other people on suspicion of child and sexual abuse and human trafficking. After he surrendered, officials said, Quiboloy was flown by military transport to Manila, the capital, and placed in police detention. After he won the presidency in 2022, Marcos set about dismantling Duterte’s power alliances, including the one with Quiboloy. Marcos said that he did not understand Duterte’s apology but that it was “her prerogative” to make it, local media reported.

Speaking at a press conference, prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the investigation is not currently directed at any individuals, and is looking into “the crime of culpable shipwreck and multiple manslaughter." New Zealander James Cutfield has already been questioned for more than two hours, and prosecutors said he had been "extremely cooperative."
