CNN —President-elect Donald Trump could be in a position to select the government’s top ethics czar when he assumes office in January – after a key ally in the Senate blocked President Joe Biden’s pick to head the Office of Government Ethics. The federal agency is charged with monitoring compliance with ethics laws that are aimed at preventing corruption. Walter Shaub, the OGE director when Trump first took office in 2017, clashed repeatedly with the then-president at the start of Trump’s first term. Among other things, he openly criticized Trump for not relinquishing ownership of his real estate and licensing empire. The previous OGE director, Trump appointee Emory Rounds, left the position in July 2023.

CNN —Tech tycoon Elon Musk joined a call between US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the day after the presidential election, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Zelensky previously said on X that he called Trump on Wednesday and congratulated him on “his historic landslide” win. Strong and unwavering US leadership is vital for the world and for a just peace,” Zelensky wrote at the time. CNN is reaching out to Musk and Trump’s teams about the call, which was first reported by Axios. Questions about Musk’s influence in the war also began to mount amid a rise in Ukrainian sightings of Russian uses of the satellite internet service.

CNN —The Justice Department on Friday announced federal charges in a thwarted Iranian plot to kill Donald Trump before the presidential election. According to court documents, Iranian officials asked Farhad Shakeri, 51, in September to focus on surveilling and ultimately assassinating Trump. But IRGC officials told Shakeri on October 7 to focus only on Trump, court documents say, and that he had seven days to formulate an assassination plan. Shakeri would pay these criminal associates, like his two co-conspirators, to monitor the victims Iranian officials sought to assassinate, according to court documents. Correction: An earlier version of this story stated that all three men were specifically charged in the plot against Donald Trump.

MUNICH — A U.S. citizen suspected of offering intelligence about the American military to China has been arrested in Frankfurt, German authorities said Thursday. Identified only as Martin D. under German privacy law, the federal prosecutors office said in a statement that the suspect “worked for the U.S. armed forces in Germany,” until recently. Prosecutors added that, as some point this year, the suspect “contacted Chinese government agencies and offered to provide them with sensitive U.S. military information for forwarding to a Chinese intelligence service.” They did not say when the offer took place. The suspect “obtained the information in question during his work with the U.S. armed forces,” prosecutors said, adding that investigators had searched his apartment. It added that she gave the information to a second Chinese national, named as Jian G., who is being prosecuted separately.

By tradition, all eligible voters gather at the now-dormant Balsams Hotel in Dixville Notch to cast their secret ballots once polls open at midnight. Once every ballot is cast, votes are tallied and results announced – hours before anywhere else, making it a destination for national reporters, who often outnumber the voters. Elon Musk’s posts on his social media platform X get far more attention when they cast doubt on the integrity of the electoral process, an NBC News analysis has found. The difference in reach was vast: 5.2 times more likes, 4.2 times more comments and 9.1 times more reposts, when comparing the median election-doubting post to the median election post that didn’t cast doubt on the process. In addition to owning X, Musk is its biggest account, with more than 202 million followers, according to the app’s tally of his following. X has developed a clear tilt in favor of far-right users and posts since Musk bought it two years ago, according to researchers. Musk told an editor at The Atlantic in July that he would “of course” accept the results of the presidential election, according to the magazine.

The social media ads have flooded platforms including Facebook, Instagram and X. One advertisement — viewed more than 900,000 times on Facebook and Instagram since Oct. 28 — depicts Trump winning in the Polymarket odds, according to the Meta Ad Library. A separate sponsored campaign from the right-wing social media personality Shaneyy Richh included nine advertisements promoting Polymarket forecasts. Based on user bets, Polymarket says Trump’s odds of winning are roughly 65.5% and Harris’s odds of winning are 34.5% as of Oct. 31. The company has also used social media to promote election betting, spending over $140,000 on Meta ads, according to the company's ad library.

CNN —An American-Iranian journalist who once worked for a US-funded broadcaster is believed to have been detained in Iran, according to his former employer and multiple press freedom groups.
