Manchester, New Hampshire CNN —Donald Trump is demanding far more than a win in Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary. That’s what we are here to tell you what we in South Carolina want,” 76-year-old Gov. It was also a clear attempt at intimidating Haley into folding her campaign if she loses Tuesday, before the race even gets to South Carolina. In the CNN poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire, Trump has expanded his lead with 50% support among likely GOP voters while Haley stands at 39%. The former South Carolina governor suffered a similar enthusiasm gap in Iowa, and after Sunday, she has only a day to turn it around in New Hampshire.

Chris Sununu threw his support behind Nikki Haley's presidential campaign, his endorsement in the critical early-voting state was highly coveted by a slew of GOP contenders. Chris Christie, one of the few GOP candidates willing to attack Trump, might have seemed like a good choice. But Sununu told the Washington Post that Christie failed to impress him. Sununu told The Post that Christie, who suspended his campaign earlier this month, was "absolutely obsessed with being president" but had a limited message for voters. Sununu has said he'd still back Trump over President Joe Biden should Haley end her presidential bid and the former president win the GOP nomination.

It was also a rare moment for Ms. Haley on the trail. Ms. Haley, 51, the former governor of South Carolina and a United Nations ambassador under Mr. Trump, has run a tightly controlled campaign. Two-thirds of Republican voters don’t think President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory was legitimate, despite all evidence to the contrary. Iowa caucusgoers, unlike most of the country, overwhelmingly support banning most or all abortions nationwide. Iowa voters could be asked on the general election ballot to make clear there is no right to abortion guaranteed in their state’s constitution. While Trump held a commanding lead among Iowa caucusgoers without college degrees, college graduates were more closely divided among Trump, former South Carolina Gov. But she made clear this week that she would ultimately support Trump if he’s the nominee.

Former President Donald J. Trump’s resounding victory in Iowa significantly raises the stakes of next week’s New Hampshire primary for Nikki Haley and the increasingly desperate contingent of Republicans who want to move on from Mr. Trump. It relies heavily on tens of thousands of independent voters expected to participate in the Republican primary. The demographic makeup of the state is also much more favorable to her than the more rural and conservative Iowa. “She’s on the ground, she’s in the diner, she’s doing the town halls,” Mr. Sununu said. Former President Donald Trump is projected to have won the Iowa caucuses, kicking off his quest to return to the White House with a resounding victory in the first state to vote in 2024. Based on early results and with many precincts still tabulating results, multiple news networks projected that Trump was projected to win the Iowa Republican caucuses. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz sprang from low digits early in Iowa to narrowly win the caucuses on the back of an impressive organization. Trump blew out the field in New Hampshire, reasserting his frontrunner status and eventually closing Cruz out. AdvertisementIt makes sense then that Trump, according to multiple reports, will delay campaigning in New Hampshire on Tuesday.

Home Depot co-founder and billionaire Ken Langone plans to meet with former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley next week in New York, as he considers backing her in the Republican presidential primary. "The only person I see who can give [Donald] Trump a run for his money is Nikki Haley," Langone told CNBC in an interview Monday, referring to the former president and current Republican frontrunner. A Left Turn for Democrats in New Hampshire?

Since their narrow victories in 2016, Democrats have won every federal race in New Hampshire – and have done so by widening margins. But Sununu, the scion of a New Hampshire Republican dynasty, decided not to run for a new term in 2024. Depending on vacancies and special elections, the Democrats might be able to flip control of the chamber even before the 2024 election. Under Biden, Democrats changed the order of their primaries to place New Hampshire tied for second, rather than first. Regardless, the unusual nature of the 2024 primary could have negative consequences for Democrats, Galdieri said.

But many Republican strategists believe that DeSantis’ struggles to connect with voters, and his choice to run at Trump solely from the right, have opened a lane for Haley to eclipse the Florida governor. An array of recent polls, both nationally and in the battleground states, signal that DeSantis and Haley have separated themselves from the rest of the candidates chasing Trump. “Absolutely, Nikki Haley has more upside than DeSantis if they are both viable after the first two,” argued Alex Stroman, a former executive director of the South Carolina GOP. DeSantis, Ayres argued, has “has tried to appeal to some of the ‘always Trump’ voters, but the ‘always Trump’ voters are always Trump for a reason. Nikki Haley seems to have figured out the job is to consolidate the ‘maybe Trump’ voters who supported Trump twice but now … want a different style and different temperament.”Republicans sympathetic to DeSantis argue that it is Haley who has boxed herself in.

While Trump and his team may be looking ahead to a potential general election rematch – and he has maintained a robust lead in GOP primary polling – the former president is still courting voters in the early nominating states. Trump’s campaign believes that winning Iowa and New Hampshire would effectively force his primary opponents to drop out and donors to rally around him, his advisers said. Alternatively, New Hampshire is also a key state for Trump’s rivals looking to make headway in their own races. “In New Hampshire, we have a lot of people that say that, yes, they support President Trump, but that doesn’t mean they’re voting for him,” Haley said last month while filing for the Granite State GOP primary. He also predicted during the Merrimack event that independents would vote in “record numbers” in the New Hampshire primary, arguing that most of them don’t want to see Trump as president again.

Iowa Democrats move caucus results to Super Tuesday

Ambassador to the United Nation Nikki Haley as Haley speaks at the Des Moines Register SoapBox during the Iowa State Fair on August 12, 2023 in Des Moines, Iowa. Iowa Democrats are officially conceding the position they have held in every presidential nominating contest since 1972: going first. Iowa Democrats will still hold an in-person caucus on Jan. 15, 2024, but that caucus will be for "party business," which includes platform resolutions and electing unbound delegates and precinct chairs. Scanlan had been keeping a close eye on when the Iowa Democrats planned to open their results. He also added he is not ready to set the date for the New Hampshire presidential primary yet.

But in first-primary state New Hampshire, Trump sits in the campaign driver's seat, with nearly half of Granite State GOP primary voters saying the former president is their first pick for the 2024 presidential nomination. Nikki Haley, who served as Trump's ambassador to the United Nations, came in second with 19% support – the highest level she has attained in New Hampshire primary polls. The survey found that voters were not very willing to shift to other candidates at this point, months before the yet-unscheduled New Hampshire primary. But the Suffolk poll indicates that Trump's legal woes have not deterred his base. "Add in second-choice votes from all the other major candidates – even if they all endorsed Haley – and Trump sits above 55%," Paleologos said.

CNN —There are two Republican primaries as an election season that defies conventional metrics and campaign trail traditions crashes into its fall stretch. Trump has already convinced millions of his supporters that he is the current legitimate president after his false claims of fraud in the 2020 election. Many of the candidates in the second tier appear to be running for the nomination of a Republican Party that may not even exist anymore. Given these numbers, why would Trump drop his boycott and attend the second GOP presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan library in California later this month? “We need to narrow it down to find a leader who can get the Republican Party back on the right track and that could get us back to winning elections again,” Hogan said.

As his rivals prepare for the two-hour showdown on Fox News, Trump’s campaign is attempting to counter-program the debate. But Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. and other surrogates planned to travel to Milwaukee, where they would have had opportunities to weigh in on national broadcasts before and after the debate in the spin room. Ahead of the debate, some candidates are offering previews of their lines of attack – including criticizing Trump for choosing not to participate. “Every one of us who have qualified for that debate stage ought to be on the stage willing to square off and answer those tough questions,” Pence said. Overall, 42% say Trump is their first choice, followed by 19% supporting DeSantis.

The question alarming many Trump-skeptical Republicans this week is whether Americans would ever send a convict to the White House. Sununu dismissed national polls that show Trump’s support among Republicans well over 50% and said to look at polling in early contest states. A new poll in Iowa by the Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom suggests Trump has the support of 42% of likely Republican caucusgoers. To win, they must break free of Mr. Trump’s drama, step out of his shadow, go on offense, attack, and present their case. While the other Republican candidates are running to save America, Mr. Trump is running to save himself. Chris Christie, who has done great work exposing Mr. Trump’s weaknesses, must broaden his message and show voters that he is more than the anti-Trump candidate. If Mr. Trump is the Republican nominee for president in 2024, Republicans will lose up and down the ballot. And Mr. Trump, ever the narcissist, will spend the entire campaign whining about his legal troubles and bilking his supporters of their retirement savings to pay for his lawyers.

Mr. DeSantis is in the midst of rebooting a presidential campaign. On Saturday, Mr. DeSantis frequently slowed down the pace of a parade in Londonderry, N.H., by stopping to shake hands with onlookers and pose for selfies. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, a Republican who has clashed with Mr. Trump, said of Mr. DeSantis after the two governors met briefly at the parade. Mr. Trump appears to be skipping the debate, handing Mr. DeSantis an opportunity to take the spotlight. But the former president’s absence also means Mr. DeSantis, as the stand-in front-runner, will most likely come under withering fire from rival candidates.

The 6 Kinds of Republican Voters

But if the Republican Party is no longer in Reagan’s image, it’s not necessarily a populist-conservative MAGA monolith, either. But if the Republican Party isn’t quite a MAGA monolith, what is it? The groups were defined by how Republican-leaning voters felt on the issues — not how they felt about Mr. Trump. In fact, Mr. Trump leads Mr. DeSantis among every group of Republican voters identified in the analysis. They’re the smallest group of Republicans today, but this group of relatively moderate but anti-woke voters might play an important role in the Republican Party in the years ahead.
