The tickets helped draw attention to blocked crossings, and the congestion decreased for a time. But the railroad sued the state, and Indiana’s Supreme Court overturned the law that authorized local officials to fine railroads for blocking crossings. Indiana and nearly 20 other states recently joined Ohio in asking the U.S. Supreme Court to determine that states can issues such regulations. Congress provided about $3 billion in 2021 to help fund projects that would alleviate congestion at frequently blocked railroad crossings.

Other airlines suffered flight delays and cancellations at the time, too, but by Wednesday United’s problems stood out as they spread to its operations across the country. Still, the number of flights canceled by United on Thursday, more than 520, eclipsed cancellations by other carriers. SkyWest Airlines, which operates flights for United and several other major airlines, ranked second, canceling just over 100 flights. As of midmorning on Friday, United had canceled more than 200 flights, or 7 percent of its schedule for the day, according to FlightAware.

A federal judge has blocked a partnership between American Airlines and JetBlue Airways at airports in New York and Boston, writing in a ruling published on Friday that the alliance would hurt competition and raise fares. The decision is a big victory for the Justice Department, which under President Biden has sought to enforce antitrust laws more aggressively. The judge ruled that collaboration between the airlines, known as the Northeast Alliance, must end. The NewsRyanair, the European low-cost airline, said on Tuesday that it had agreed to buy 150 737 Max 10 airplanes, its largest-ever Boeing order. At list prices, 150 planes would sell for more than $20 billion, though Boeing and other manufacturers typically agree to deep discounts for such large orders. The jets are expected to replace older, smaller and less-efficient Boeing planes and be delivered between 2027 and 2033. Energy transition nonprofit RMI will host the initiative, the Virtual Power Plant Partnership (VP3), which will also aim to shape policy for promoting the use of the systems, the companies said. Virtual power plants pool together thousands of decentralized energy resources like electric vehicles or electric heaters controlled by smart thermostats. VPPs have already improved grid reliability in such countries as Germany and Australia and in some U.S. states.
