VILLEPINTE, France — Boxer Cindy Ngamba made history on Sunday by becoming the first athlete competing as a refugee to clinch an Olympic medal. The 25-year-old originally from Cameroon offered hope for the Refugee Olympic Team that was created to call attention to the plight of refugees across the world. She will face Atheyna Bylon, who ensured that Panama would get its fourth-ever Olympic medal with her own win shortly after Ngamba’s fight. “It means the world to me to be the first ever refugee to win a medal,” Ngamba told reporters. The Refugee Olympic Team has nearly quadrupled in size since its debut.

PARIS — The Winter Games will make a return visit to Salt Lake City in 2034 while the 2030 Olympics were tentatively set for the French Alps, officials said Wednesday. "The last 10 days of my life were totally unexpected," Fraser Bullock, head of the Salt Lake City bid, told NBC affiliate KSL minutes after the vote for Salt Lake City. But with an 83-6 vote for Salt Lake City to host, Bullock said he believes the IOC has total confidence in 2034 organizers. The naming of Salt Lake City and French Alps as the next two winter sites had been in the works for months, with only moderate concerns rooted in France's snap elections.

To the Editor:Re “Bus After Bus, Texas Changed U.S. Migration” (front page, July 24):Texas did indeed have to bear the brunt of immigrants crossing its border from Mexico, and the rest of the nation might have stepped up to share the Lone Star State’s burden had Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas played the role of statesman rather than partisan gamesman. Instead, he grandstanded by depositing often desperate people in the middle of Northern cities, most of them carefully chosen for being in the hands of Democrats. For this, Mr. Abbott gained what he sought: headlines and cheers. And in the long run, he’ll be recalled in infamy.

It is unlikely that any team has ever arrived at an Olympics the way the men’s soccer team of Israel rolled up to the Parc de Princes on Wednesday night. Police vans led the way, dozens of them filled with squads of French riot police and surrounded by a phalanx of officers on motorcycles. Then came more vans, more police outriders, more sirens — a stunning show of force with one task: to protect the first Israeli participants to take the field of play in the Paris Games. The security of Israel’s team at the Olympics — any Olympics — has been a critical issue since the killing of 11 athletes and coaches at the Munich Games in 1972. The ongoing war in Gaza and the global protests that have accompanied it have made the Paris Games perhaps the most fraught sporting event featuring Israeli athletes in the half-century since then.
