The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) (LSEG.L) and UK trade officials visited several cities in China to promote UK capital markets recently. Wilson Xu, a banking veteran from CITIC Securities pioneering the Stock Connect programme, said liquidity will improve when there is a critical mass of Chinese listings. The Shanghai-London Stock Connect was launched in 2019 and the link was expanded last year to include Shenzhen and Switzerland. Even arrangements by SIX to allow roughly 2.5 hours of trading in a session for Chinese GDRs didn't help. Chinese companies, however, have been positive in public disclosures about their forays in Europe which have given them an alternative channel to raise funds and access foreign currency for their operations abroad.

MUMBAI, April 11 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee declined past the key psychological mark of 82 per dollar on Tuesday on likely corporate outflows and importer demand for the greenback, traders said. The rupee finished at 82.1250 to the dollar, having declined up to 82.15 during the session. They also cited importer demand through the session. So far, companies and bankers have had a bias towards rupee appreciation on improving macro economic fundamentals and carry trade appeal. "A sharp pick-up in services exports, increased smartphone exports and savings in the oil import bill... have likely altered India's CAD permanently."
DUBAI, March 26 (Reuters) - Standard Chartered (STAN.L) plans to sell its Jordanian business to Arab Jordan Investment Bank (AJIB) (AJIB.AM), the two parties said on Sunday, as the emerging markets-focused lender presses ahead with plans to exit seven markets in Africa and the Middle East. All Standard Chartered Bank employees in Jordan will be transferred to AJIB, it said an emailed statement. AJIB said the purchase falls within the Jordanian lender's strategy to grow its market share in the country, which continues to grow after it acquired HSBC's banking business in Jordan in 2014 and National Bank of Kuwait's banking business in Jordan in 2022. Standard Chartered in April 2022 said it plans to leave seven markets, consisting of Angola, Cameroon, Gambia, Jordan, Lebanon, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. While big banks have dominated headlines, the country's 4,258 community banks, which are more risk-averse, account for more than 90% of all chartered banks. Her comments marked a shift in emphasis to include community banks that were not mentioned in her earlier testimony. "The community banks in this country, we know, are strong and resilient. Yellen's shift to include community banks "was certainly better, it was an attempt for her to kind of restate what she was saying and acknowledging the importance of the community banks," Williams said. Community banks play an important political role.
To better protect his cash, an investor bringing in six figures a month uses a "DIF member bank." The Depositors Insurance Fund (DIF) is a private insurance fund that banks can pay for to provide extra insurance to their customers. "The FDIC covers you for the first $250,000, but DIF covers you for anything over that," the real estate investor, who grosses over $100,000 per month from rental income, told Insider. That doesn't mean you have to live in Massachusetts to use a DIF member bank. As the DIF website explains: "Several DIF member banks have branches in neighboring states.
Clients were told that the CEO and CFO are out of SVB, while other managers remain. His message to them: Silicon Valley Bank was fully operational, protected by unlimited FDIC insurance even for new deposits, and all business was functioning normally, as if the bank run on Friday never happened. In this case, Silicon Valley Bridge Bank is a full-service bank." Retaining management is, perhaps, a good outcome for the moment for SVB employees who have been cast in a pall of uncertainty since last week. SVB employees now seem to fall into three groups, according to the recruiter, who has spoken with SVB employees in recent days.
March 14 (Reuters) - Silicon Valley Bank's new Chief Executive Tim Mayopoulos on Tuesday urged the failed bank's top venture capital clients to move their deposits to its newly created bridge entity, people who attended a virtual meeting with him said. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) appointed the former Fannie Mae CEO to head Silicon Valley Bridge Bank N.A. Mayopoulos told clients deposits at the bank were now among the safest of any U.S. banks or institutions, attendees at the meeting said. Hemant Taneja, CEO of venture capital firm General Catalyst, recommended on Tuesday that its clients who had banked with SVB keep or return at least 50% of their capital to the bank. He has also served as general counsel of Bank of America, and held senior roles at Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse First Boston, and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.

Investors are now on edge over whether the demise of SVB could spark a broader banking sector meltdown. On Monday, US stocks were mixed, with banking shares taking a hit. In Hong Kong, shares in Bank of China (Hong Kong) and Hang Seng Bank fell 3.7% and 1.3% respectively. Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Mizuho Financial Group both dropped more than 7%. In Seoul, KB Financial Group and Shinhan Financial Group fell 3.6% and 2.5% respectively.
WASHINGTON/SINGAPORE, March 13 (Reuters) - U.S. authorities launched emergency measures on Sunday to shore up confidence in the banking system after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank (SIVB.O) threatened to trigger a broader financial crisis. Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), a mainstay for the startup economy, was a product of the decades-long era of cheap money, with unique risks that made it especially vulnerable. With the Fed poised to continue raising interest rates, investors said the financial system may not be fully out of the woods just yet. Goldman Sachs' analysts said they no longer expect it to raise rates at that meeting, amid the stress in the banking sector. A senior U.S. Treasury official said the actions taken would protect depositors, while providing additional support to the broader banking system, but officials and regulators were continuing to monitor financial system stability.

"(But) it feels like I should keep some dollars on hand, as the yuan will depreciate further." Others anticipating a bumpy ride ahead for the Chinese currency include China Southern Airlines (600029.SS). Such moves are perhaps not surprising given yuan volatility since Beijing suddenly unwound its zero-COVID strategy. "Overall, yuan exchange rate will remain basically stable at reasonable levels," he added at a March 3. news briefing. NEW YORK, Feb 24 (Reuters) - India's Adani Group will hold a fixed-income roadshow next week in Asia, according to a bank document seen by Reuters, as the beleaguered conglomerate tries to shore up investor confidence in the aftermath of a U.S. short-seller report. Adani group executives, including group Chief Financial Officer Jugeshinder Singh, will attend the roadshows in Singapore on Feb. 27, and Hong Kong on Feb. 28 and March 1, the document showed. Dollar bonds of Adani Group were largely trading lower on Friday. Bonds of Adani Ports (APSE.NS) maturing in February 2031 led the losses, while some notes of Adani Green Energy (ADNA.NS) were marginally higher. Barclays, BNP Paribas, DBS Bank, Deutsche Bank, Emirates NBD Capital, ING, IMI-Intesa Sanpaolo, MUFG, Mizuho, SMBC Nikko and Standard Chartered Bank are the banks organising next week's roadshow, according to the document.
Hong Kong CNN —Hong Kong’s Covid-hit economy will return to growth this year and expand by between 3.5% and 5.5%, as the city opens up and China’s economic outlook improves, Hong Kong’s financial secretary said on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Hong Kong’s financial secretary Paul Chan said the economy will stage a significant rebound this year, with real GDP growth hitting 3.5% to 5.5%. Previously, analysts had broadly raised their forecasts for Hong Kong’s economic growth to a range between 3% and 6.5%. Industries like tourism, trade, and real estate, are set to “ride the crest of Hong Kong’s reopening wave,” they said. Currently, trading in Hong Kong’s financial market can be suspended under extreme weather, such as a typhoon.
REUTERS/Peter Nicholls/File PhotoWASHINGTON/LONDON, Feb 17 (Reuters) - U.S.-based investment firm BlackRock said on Friday it would join a new sovereign debt roundtable set up to accelerate progress on stalled relief efforts for distressed countries, with Britain's Standard Chartered also joining, according to sources. "We welcome the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable and look forward to engaging constructively in the dialogue alongside other key stakeholders," a spokesperson for BlackRock (BLK.N) told Reuters. Unlike the G20's Common Framework platform for bilateral debt restructuring, the roundtable talks include public and private creditors as well as borrowing countries. Some 52% of private-sector-held sovereign debt is under contract in New York state. "Private creditors are major players in many debt restructurings and need to share the responsibility for achieving a successful restructuring," Malpass added.
It's just ridiculous that anybody would buy this stuff," Munger, 99, told CNBC's Becky Quick during a livestream of the event, adding: "It's totally absolutely crazy, stupid gambling." "I think the people who oppose my position are idiots, so I don't think there is a rational argument against my position," he said. Munger's comments come amid an avalanche of problems for crypto investors over the past year. He's previously urged the U.S. government to ban cryptocurrencies, and may partially get his wish as the crypto industry faces rising regulatory crackdowns. "In other words, an adviser may custody crypto assets at a bank, but banks are cautioned by their regulators not to custody crypto assets," Uyeda wrote.
The proposed amendments to federal custody rules would "expand the scope" to include any client assets under the custody of an investment advisor. The move poses a fresh threat to crypto exchange custody programs, as other federal regulators actively discourage custodians like banks from holding customer crypto assets. "Make no mistake: Today's rule, the 2009 rule, covers a significant amount of crypto assets," Gensler said in a statement. "As the release states, 'most crypto assets are likely to be funds or crypto asset securities covered by the current rule.' In its most recent earnings report, the exchange specified that it keeps customer crypto assets "bankruptcy remote" from hypothetical general creditors, but noted that the "novelty" of crypto assets meant it was uncertain how courts would treat them.
NEW YORK, Feb 15 (Reuters) - India's Adani Group and two of its main subsidiaries caught up in a short-selling storm in recent weeks are to hold calls with bond investors on Feb. 16 and Feb. 21, according to a document seen by Reuters. The planned calls follow a long-awaited credit report issued by the Indian conglomerate earlier this week that said its companies faced no material refinancing risk, or near-term liquidity issues. According to the document sent to investors the call on Thursday for Adani Group will be attended by its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jugeshinder Singh and head of Group Corporate Finance Anupam Misra. An Adani Green Energy call also on Thursday will involve its CFO Phuntsok Wangyal, and an Adani Transmission call next week will be attended by its CFO Rohit Soni and CFO of Adani Electricity Kunjal Mehta. Rating agencies S&P Global and Moody's this month revised their outlooks to negative from stable for some of the group's companies, while index provider MSCI said it would cut the weightings of some Adani companies in its stock indexes.

Andy Feng | iStock Editorial | Getty ImagesChina's economy will be "on fire" in the second half of 2023 as the economic performance of East and West diverges, according to Standard Chartered Chairman José Viñals. The reopening of the Chinese economy following several years of strict "zero-Covid" measures has buoyed sentiment among economists that the global growth and inflation picture may be less bleak than initially feared this year. OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann earlier this week said the reopening was "overwhelmingly positive" in the global fight to tackle sky-high inflation. The reopening has proven tricky, with China reporting a huge rise in Covid cases and deaths in recent weeks. Viñals said the structural improvements that helped insulate many EM economies would also enable them to flourish in years to come.
REUTERS/Eva Plevier/File PhotoWINNIPEG, Manitoba, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Netherlands-based Rabobank NA (RABOVR.UL) is aiming to grab 10-15% of the Canadian farm lending market within 15 years, as it aims to shake up a sector dominated by government and domestic banks, its new Canadian agricultural head told Reuters on Wednesday. It took Rabobank a decade before deciding to expand into Canadian farm lending, taking a methodical approach, Lieverse said. Rabobank expects Canadian farm lending to be profitable from the start and plans to announce hiring plans shortly, she said. Rabobank did not release its estimate of the value of the Canadian farm lending market, but government agency Statistics Canada pegged 2021 farm debt at a record-high C$129 billion ($96.1 billion), with chartered banks accounting for 37%. Farm Credit Canada, owned by the Canadian government, is the biggest agricultural lender, controlling a market share of about one-third, Lieverse said.
