GENEVA (AP) — Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva was disqualified from the 2022 Olympics on Monday, almost two years after the teenager's doping case caused turmoil at the Beijing Games. The reaction of her coach, Eteri Tutberidze, was fiercely criticized by skating experts and International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach. The case came to CAS to challenge a Russian anti-doping tribunal verdict in late 2022 that Valieva was not at fault. Since the Olympics, Valieva has skated on an expanded Russian national competition circuit and in various TV events and ice shows. “I say, you know, we’re the only two athletes from the Beijing team that are still competing — every single one of the rest of us has moved on,” Bates said.

CNN —The doping case involving Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva is taking place at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over the next two days, the latest chapter in a saga which has rumbled on since last year’s Winter Olympics. Following the figure skating team event at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, it emerged that the then-15-year-old Valieva had tested positive for trimetazidine, a heart medication which can boost endurance. In December 2022, a Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) commission said that Valieva bore no “fault of negligence” for the transgression. RUSADA has changed its stance and is now seeking a punishment that “may include or be limited to a reprimand” for Valieva, CAS announced in February. The Spanish man, who was not named, was gored in his side by a bull called Cocinero during the bull running festival in the town of Pobla de Farnals in Valencia region on Saturday. He was taken to hospital but died later, officials there said on Sunday. A second Spanish man was gored in the leg by the same bull and was in a stable condition in hospital, they added. BUDAPEST, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Reigning champion Tobi Amusan of Nigeria won her qualifying heat in the women's 100-metres hurdles on Tuesday to secure a spot in the semi-finals amid a cloud of controversy. The 26-year-old, who set the world record in the semi-finals of last year's world championships, had a provisional anti-doping suspension lifted on Thursday, but could still face an appeal that could potentially reinstate the ban. Amusan, whose world record is 12.12, was slow out of the blocks before cruising to a time of 12.48 seconds, third fastest on the night. "The team USA, we have the hardest team to make in the hurdles and that is what makes our event so exciting. Amusan's presence at the global showpiece was a surprise, with her suspension lifted just two days before the meet began.

July 11 (Reuters) - Europe's top human rights court ruled in favour of Olympic runner Caster Semenya on Tuesday, saying courts in Switzerland should give her a new chance to fight a requirement that female athletes with high natural testosterone take drugs to lower it. The ECHR ruled, by a slender majority of four votes to three, that Semenya's original appeal against World Athletics regulations had not been properly heard. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in 2019 that World Athletics' rules were necessary for fair female competition. At the time, Semenya said the rules were discriminatory, and contraceptive pills made her feel "constantly sick". Semenya won gold in the women's 800 metres at the 2016 Olympics and is also a three-time world champion in the distance.

June 22 (Reuters) - Kamila Valieva's doping case hearing involving the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), International Skating Union (ISU) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will be held from Sept. 26-29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said on Thursday. Russian Valieva tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine at the Russian national championships in December 2021 but the result was only made known on Feb. 8, 2022 a day after she helped her team win gold at the Beijing Olympics. "Following the hearing, the CAS Panel will deliberate and prepare the Arbitral Award containing its decision. At this juncture, it is not possible to indicate when the final decision will be announced," CAS said in a statement. During the Beijing Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided no medals for the team figure skating event would be presented until Valieva's case had been resolved.
