CNN —Commonwealth leaders, ending a week-long summit in Samoa, said on Saturday the time had come for a discussion on whether Britain should commit to reparations for its role in the transatlantic slave trade. The statement also made reference to “blackbirding”, a term for people from places including the Pacific Islands being deceived, coerced or kidnapped to work on plantations in Australia and elsewhere. Those opposed to reparations say countries should not be held responsible for historical wrongs, while those in support say the legacy of slavery has led to vast and persistent racial inequality. The joint statement did not mention what form reparations should take. Stefan Rousseau/Pool/ReutersStarmer told a press conference the joint statement did two things: “It notes calls for discussion and it agrees that this is the time for a conversation.

Royal Caribbean is set to release its quarterly results on Tuesday, followed by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings ' report on Wednesday. That means the cruise lines may have more room to grow, she said. His 70-meter effort broke the Olympic record set minutes prior by Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna, a heavy favorite going into the Games. “I yanked it, it just dropped right out of 20 meters,” Stona recalled the first moment he picked up a discus. In Fayetteville, he met Ryan Crouser – a three-time Olympic gold medalist and an Olympic record holder in shot put – who joined the Razorbacks’ athletics staff in 2019 as a volunteer. But Stona had other plans: his fourth attempt on the night sailed 70 meters, breaking the Olympic record set minutes earlier and causing one of the biggest upsets of the Games. The gold medal in Paris gave Stona “some next level of confidence” to pick up where he left off.

APIA, Samoa — King Charles said Friday that the Commonwealth should acknowledge its “painful” history, as African and Caribbean nations push for reparations for Britain’s role in transatlantic slavery. “I understand from listening to people across the Commonwealth how the most painful aspects of our past continue to resonate,” Charles said in a speech to the summit. Opponents of reparations say countries should not be held responsible for historical wrongs, while those in favor say the legacy of slavery has led to vast and persistent racial inequality. There are different types of reparations, from financial payments and apologies to technology transfer and educational programs. “What the Ocean Declaration seeks to do and to say is that once your marine boundaries are fixed, they’re fixed in perpetuity,” Scotland told Reuters.

APIA, Samoa — The leaders of the Commonwealth grouping of nations met on Thursday ahead of a summit in the South Pacific nation of Samoa that will feature talks on climate change and the question of reparations for Britain’s role in transatlantic slavery. More than half of the Commonwealth’s members are small nations, many of them low-lying islands at risk from rising sea levels caused by climate change. Among them is Tuvalu, whose climate change minister, Maina Vakafua Talia, urged the grouping to strive for the Paris Accord’s warming goal of 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F), calling new fossil fuel projects a “death sentence” for his country. Island leaders are expected to issue a declaration on ocean protection at the summit, with climate change being a central topic of discussion. “Climate change is an existential threat,” Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong told a press conference after a meeting with counterparts.

The search for a woman who fell from a Taylor Swift-themed cruise ship in the Bahamas was suspended Wednesday, a day after she went into the water, officials said. The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday afternoon that the Royal Bahamas Defence Force was suspending its search pending new developments and that it no longer needed the Coast Guard's assistance. The Coast Guard said it sent an HC-144 airplane and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to help. A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said that a search-and-rescue operation was immediate launched and that it is working with local authorities. The trio worked with Royal Caribbean to host private events centered on Swift and her Eras Tour, according to the group's website.

London CNN —Britain’s government and King Charles III are bracing for a heated conversation about reparations for the transatlantic slave trade, as the issue looks set to overshadow a summit of Commonwealth leaders in Samoa. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told reporters on his journey to the Pacific island nation: “I think we should be facing forward. Successive British governments have resisted calls to formally apologize for the slave trade, or to entertain the prospect of reparations. Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks with his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, at a state banquet opening the summit on Thursday. CNN —Violence is intensifying in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, this week, which saw a United Nations helicopter hit by gunfire and two gangs apparently target US embassy vehicles. Thursday’s helicopter shooting will “likely” cause US airlines to halt their operations once again in Port-au-Prince, the second source told CNN. Last March, major US carriers like Spirit, JetBlue, and American Airlines suspended their operations at Port-au-Prince’s international airport for nearly three months after a sudden spike in gang violence. Gang violence in Haiti has spiraled in recent years, with attacks becoming more brazen and violent. Members of the “Gran Grif” gang used automatic rifles to kill at least 70 people in an attack that displaced 6,000 people, said a UN agency at the time.

I was charged $2,500 for damages on my rental car, and I didn't have insurance — just my credit card reimbursement. Luckily, I had rental car insurance through my Chase Freedom credit card. I make it a point to book rental cars on a credit card with a rental car insurance benefit so I can decline the rental car company's collision insurance and save money while still being covered. I saved $250 on my rental car reservation this time by declining the collision damage waiver. I missed one essential documentWhen I got home from Costa Rica, I started the claims process with my credit card immediately so I could be reimbursed for the $2,500 charge before my credit card bill was due.

The previous record from the 2014 to 2017 mass bleaching affected just below 66% of the world’s reef area. Triggered by heat stress in warm oceans, coral bleaching occurs when corals expel the colourful algae living in their tissues. A bleached coral is not dead, but ocean temperatures need to cool off for any hope of recovery. “We’ve never had a coral bleaching event this big before.”In just the last six weeks, bleaching has been confirmed in the waters of Palau, Guam and Israel. What are we going to do about it?” said Emily Darling, who leads the Wildlife Conservation Society’s global coral reef conservation programme.

I took my kids to a family-centric, all-inclusive resort in Mexico this summer. My kids had fun, but I was the one who needed to be taken care of, and I loved it. There was only one option that made sense: An all-inclusive resort.
