Jane Birkin: Decades of Effortless Elegance

There were the babydoll dresses that few besides the actress Mia Farrow ever wore with greater élan. “Her style was very different from American style,” Ms. Sui said, and it introduced “something new to our fashion vocabulary.” What exactly was it about that style, the designer was asked? Perhaps, in the end, the Hermès Birkin bag provides the best example. Before its invention, Ms. Birkin was often photographed toting a straw marketbasket crammed with makeup, keys and assorted paraphernalia. “I would love to have been a sort of neat person and wear a Kelly,” Ms. Birkin once explained, referring to a prim, boxy-style handbag created and named for the film star Grace Kelly.

For a brief moment, after Celine canceled its men’s wear show in Paris because of the recent unrest in France, there were concerns about whether last week’s couture shows would go as planned. Thom Browne, for his debut couture show, turned an opera house into a wonderland full of fantastical suiting. Valentino showed ethereal gowns against the backdrop of the Château de Chantilly, a palatial property outside Paris and one of the most extraordinary venues I’ve ever photographed. In the crowds outside the shows, there was noticeably less peacocking. Others traded boxy clothes, which have dominated the style of guests and fans in recent years, for pieces with softer, more fluid silhouettes.

REUTERS/Sarah MeyssonnierPARIS, July 6 (Reuters) - Italian fashion house Fendi took to the former Paris bourse headquarters on Thursday for its fall haute couture catwalk show, where designer Kim Jones showed a contemporary lineup of light, sensual gowns for formal occasions. Models marched steadily down the marble runway of a stark, white space set up in the neoclassical Palais Brongniart while dramatic opera singing played on the soundtrack. Jones, who is also creative director for the menswear line of Dior, another LVMH-owned fashion house, took his bow with Delfina Delettrez Fendi, artistic director of jewellery. The Paris haute couture shows wrap up Thursday, having featured labels Giorgio Armani Prive, Kering-owned (PRTP.PA) Balenciaga, Dior, Valentino and American fashion house Thom Browne.

OnlyFans lost a battle at Europe's highest court over how much sales tax it should pay. The court ruled it should pay value-added tax on all revenues, and not just its 20% commission. The court sided with the UK tax body and the decision will shape a final ruling by a UK tribunal. Fenix International will likely need to pay sales tax, known as VAT, on all the revenues generated by OnlyFans creators – not just its 20% commission, Reuters reported. The court agreed with HMRC, the UK's tax authority, which told Fenix in April 2020 to pay VAT on revenue it generated between 2017 and 2020.

Several of this year's Grammy nominees, including "abcdefu" singer Gayle and R&B artist Muni Long, rose in popularity after influencers and everyday users posted TikTok videos with their music. Even as the music industry gathers in Los Angeles to celebrate artists and their songs at Sunday's Grammy awards, the relationship between hitmaker TikTok and music labels is showing signs of strain. As deals with the major music companies expire, the labels are looking to receive some of TikTok's ad revenue, according to Tatiana Cirisano, music industry analyst for Midia Research. One music industry insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said "it’s open to interpretation" why this is happening now. "TikTok has become really integral to the way that younger people relate to music, discover music and consume it,” Cirisano said.

Turns out it’s the same sample, a sleight of ear designed to trigger warm nostalgia, and also maybe a little confusion. Even its video is optimized for recognition, with Santana doing the same stomp Beyoncé does in hers, in an almost identical outfit. Throughout 2022, that gambit has been deployed again and again — by pop singers and rappers, established stars and newbies. Here, old songs — hip-hop classics, pop novelties and more — are scrunched and stretched sometimes to the point of absurdity. These songs are concessions that say the quiet part out loud — everyone has always been borrowing voraciously, from everyone else, constantly.
