Nearly 78% of foreign-born men were in the labor force, compared to about 66% of native-born men. An American Airlines representative approached each of the men before takeoff, the complaint said, ordering them off the plane. “(O)nce they reached the jet bridge, they saw that several other Black men were also being removed from the plane. In fact, it appeared to Plaintiffs that American had ordered all of the Black male passengers on Flight 832 off the plane,” the complaint reads. A college of supposedly conservative cardinals elected a surprisingly liberal pope. It seemed as though liberal Catholicism had been merely hibernating, awaiting a new pope, a new spring. But lately, in both Rome and the United States, I’ve had conversations with well-informed Catholics in which the old conservative confidence has made a comeback. The fear that the next pope might be another liberalizer, younger and more ambitious than Francis, has largely receded. This new confidence reflects a specific reading of the waning years (or what are probably the waning years) of the Francis pontificate.

Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Wednesday she will force a vote over House Speaker Mike Johnson’s ouster next week – a move that comes after Democrats have said they will vote to kill the effort and ensure Johnson doesn’t lose his job. “This motion is wrong for the Republican Conference, wrong for the institution, and wrong for the country,” the speaker said in a statement after Greene’s announcement. London CNN —Mining giant BHP has made a near-$40 billion bid to take over its UK rival Anglo American in what would be the largest mining deal on record. BHP said in a statement Thursday that it valued Anglo American shares at £25.08 ($31.40) apiece, or £31.1 billion ($38.9 billion) in total. The potential deal would have a higher value than the $38.3 billion acquisition of Switzerland’s Xstrata by commodities company Glencore in 2012, according to Dealogic data. It would also be the biggest merger or acquisition in the mining industry by value since Dealogic began collecting the data in 2004. Shares in Anglo American soared as much as 13.8% on the news.

CNN —A Polish pilot proposed to his flight attendant girlfriend during a flight from Warsaw to Krakow, and she said yes. “On today’s flight there is a very special person and I hope that she doesn’t expect anything,” he said. The soon-to-be Mrs Hanc, Paula, can then be seen running down the aisle of the plane to hug her future husband. “I don’t know if this is the right hand for this,” she said as he slipped the ring onto her finger in front of delighted passengers. It all started when Zahn was a flight attendant and Duncan was a pilot on a Pan American World Airways flight from Rome to Tehran in 1970 and lasted until Duncan’s death in 2021 at the age of 86.

New York CNN —Columbia University student organizers were given a midnight deadline Tuesday to resolve talks with the university over dismantling the pro-Palestinian encampment that has cast its campus into days of turmoil and unease, the school’s president said. Though the outcome of the negotiations is still unclear, Columbia President Minouche Shafik said the university would consider “alternative options” if no agreement was reached by midnight. As of 12:10 a.m., the NYPD had not been asked by Columbia University to respond to the campus, a police spokesperson told CNN. Harvard University has closed Harvard Yard and officials at the university suspended a pro-Palestinian student organization for allegedly violating school policies. The encampment at Columbia University was lively early this week, with many students congregating in circles, eating and talking.
