Companies City of Yellowknife FollowYELLOWKNIFE, Northwest Territories, Aug 16 (Reuters) - A huge wildfire in northern Canada is creeping closer to the capital of the Northwest Territories and could reach the outskirts of Yellowknife by the weekend unless rain comes, the territorial government said on Wednesday. Canada is enduring its worst-ever wildfire season with more than 1,000 active fires burning across the country, including 230 in the Northwest Territories. Northwest Territories Premier Caroline Cochrane said some Yellowknife residents were preemptively leaving the city but urged people to remain calm and warned that highways could close suddenly because of the fire risk. The Northwest Territories declared a state of emergency late Tuesday and the Canadian military has been mobilized to help tackle the blazes and airlift some residents to safety. Cochrane spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the wildfire situation on Wednesday afternoon.

In 1999, after my freshman year in college, I was a counselor at a camp in central Vermont. Camp was where I found my professional calling: Teaching kids to mold clay flowers by hand made me realize I wanted to spend the rest of my life making and teaching art. Somewhere in this outdoor summer utopia — a blend of vaguely Quaker ethos with a communist, hippie, artsy sensibility and a dash of Midwestern kindness — I found my people. Although I was technically hired as a ceramics counselor, I also appointed myself the unofficial photographer of Camp Killooleet. Camp felt magical.

The World Scout Jamboree, held in Saemangeum on the country’s west coast, saw nearly 40,000 teenagers turn up, according to organizers. The event was supposed to feature outdoor activities, cultural performances, sustainability workshops and other offerings for the participants, mostly middle and high schoolers. But extreme weather has put a dampener on festivities and scouts are now leaving the main venue almost a week ahead of schedule. The typhoon is forecast to hit South Korea on Thursday, with up to 6 inches (150 millimeters) of rainfall expected, according to CNN meteorologists. CNN —An 8-year-old was left with minor injuries after being attacked by a cougar in Washington’s Olympic National Park on Saturday evening, park officials said. The child was camping with their mother at Lake Angeles, in the Heart O’ the Hills area south of Port Angeles when the cougar attacked, according to a news release from the National Park Service. Staff evacuated all campers in the Lake Angeles area and closed the Lake Angeles and Heather Park areas until further notice. “A person is one thousand times more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a cougar,” according to the department. The Lake Angeles campground is about 100 miles west of Seattle.

The downside of car camping is the fact that these campgrounds are often packed to the rafters with other campers. While RV camping may seem like a recent phenomenon, it’s actually been around for more than 100 years. Among the websites that list RV campgrounds and post very useful user ratings are RVshare/Hipcamp, RV Life and Good Sam. Other than maybe car camping, it requires the least expense and equipment. The coroner’s findings came more than a week after the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office said that the bodies of the campers had been found near Gold Creek Campground, a discovery that drew national attention as officials sought to identify the victims and determine why they had apparently attempted to camp through a brutal winter. Michael Barnes, the Gunnison County coroner, said on Tuesday that the family members were all from Colorado Springs and had lived “off the grid,” survived on canned food and sheltered in a tent before a harsh winter or malnourishment most likely led to their deaths. The sisters had been “discouraged with the state of the world” in recent years and had set out last July to permanently live near Gold Creek Campground in western Colorado, Mr. Barnes said. “She went for good intentions,” Ms. Jara said in an interview on Tuesday night. “She thought she was protecting her son and our sister, Christine, because she didn’t want them to get wrapped up in what the world was coming to in her eyes.”Rebecca Vance’s fears intensified during the pandemic, Ms. Jara said, noting that her sister had not believed in conspiracy theories but had simply been fearful of the world and had trusted that a better life awaited them in nature.

On a rainy Sunday in July, the Trailblazers began to arrive at Camp Squanto, a 100-acre sleep-away retreat in southern New Hampshire. As many of the campers tried to settle in, the rainstorm grew more intense. Within hours, flash floods turned the roads around the camp into muddy rivers. Campers, parents and staff members huddled in the dining lodge. Many of them bedded down on the floor for the night, intermittently checking weather updates as the rain continued into the next day.

Americans can expect cheaper gas prices this year, with the national average set to fall below $3 a gallon, per GasBuddy. "I think the second half of the summer is going to be more affordable than the first half," Patrick De Haan said. US gas prices hit their lowest level since late April ahead of Independence Day, with the national average standing at $3.52 a gallon, per AAA. De Haan noted that Saudi Arabia's latest decision to keep cutting crude production this summer could spark a rally in crude oil prices and offset GasBuddy's forecast for falling gas prices in August. The June-November Atlantic hurricane season, and any unexpected refinery outages, could also pose risks for the downward trend in gas prices, De Haan said.

The Lemoines put their house on the market, withdrew all their savings and "sold everything we owned to buy the campground" for $1.6 million, Mark says. Mark and Karla Lemoine sold their house, car and more to buy a campground in Benton Harbor, Michigan. It brought in $1.2 million in revenue last year, enough for the Lemoines to pay themselves a combined $150,000 in salary. It's been non-stop negativity over at Goldman Sachs recently. The bad news just keeps rolling in over at Goldman Sachs. The Economist put a fine point on this earlier this year when it ran a cover story titled "The humbling of Goldman Sachs." But Goldman Sachs' historic partnership model has given it a distinct culture, where these kinds of things matter. Whatever the truth is, it's clear that Goldman Sachs and David Solomon are going to remain in the headlines for some time.

GENOA, Nev. — Thick gray wildfire smoke is pouring down from Canada into the Northeast this week, but it may have a silver lining. Every summer and fall, wildfires in America wreck homes, air quality and lives. While many of the current fires in Canada were caused by lightning that landed on dry forests, here in the States, lightning is rarely the culprit. With so much smoke polluting the air so early in the fire season, maybe we can finally stop thinking of wildfires as out of our control. A couple of campers whose plan to leave no trace went awry when they decided to light their excrement on fire.

She described the joys of living in a van — and its less romantic sides, like showering at the gym. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with a 38-year-old personal assistant about going from a traditional apartment to living in a van. For the first couple of weeks of living in my van, I would park in front of the high-rise apartment complex that I used to live in. I also learned that van life is very popular in the West. I'm never going back to traditional housingWhen I first got into van life, I didn't research how to make it work.

Preventing a 'California-style housing crisis'Montana's ultra-conservative GOP governor, Greg Gianforte, recently called the housing crisis "probably the number one issue faced by working Montanans." Conservative supporters of pro-housing policies in the state have successfully tied anti-California sentiment to anti-sprawl and pro-housing policies. "The fear is that in 25 years, we're going to have a California-style housing crisis," Cotton said.
