Facing pressure from his right flank, McCarthy is pursuing a partisan Republican CR that would cut current government funding levels and contain provisions on security and immigration at the U.S. border with Mexico. Those proposals are unlikely to win the Democratic support they would need to pass the Senate, or to be signed by Biden. HARDLINE HOLDOUTSBut Republican hardliners, including members of the House Freedom Caucus and allies of former President Donald Trump, are resisting even McCarthy's partisan plan. The record-setting, 34-day 2018 shutdown came weeks after Republicans lost their House majority during Trump's term. "They're talking to a small portion of America," said Republican Representative Darrell Issa.

Crypto companies have been expanding in Washington to combat growing regulatory scrutiny, especially from the SEC which says the industry has been flouting its rules. "Everybody wants to make sure that what they're doing isn't going to be erased by the government," said Kara Calvert, head of U.S. policy at Coinbase, referring to the crypto industry. A House vote before year-end is possible, but the outlook is dimmer in the Senate, where industry-friendly crypto bills have failed to gain traction. And Senate Banking Committee Chair Sherrod Brown of Ohio has shown little interest in making it a priority to advance the House bills. "The last thing we need is for the crypto industry to write their own rulebook — too many Ohioans have been burned by fraud and scams," said Brown in a statement to Reuters.

Manchester United also got a much-needed 1-0 win at Burnley to snap a run of three straight defeats in all competitions. Everton registered their first league victory of the season, producing an impressive display to triumph 3-1 at Brentford whose home struggles continued. A City win never looked in doubt once Kyle Walker set up Foden to thump in the opener after a 46-pass move and Haaland headed powerfully into the net from a cross by Matheus Nunes. "We played, I would say, 51, 52 minutes 10 against 11, so it was not easy, but we were fantastic," City manager Pep Guardiola said. Victory lifted Everton out of the relegation zone and up to 15th with four points, while Brentford, without a home win this season, are 12th on six.

In some ways, attaching Ukraine aid to other pressing matters could improve the odds of passing it quickly. Some lawmakers will be more inclined to vote for Ukraine assistance if it gets included with say, disaster relief for their home state. He said the focus needs to be on first passing an overall defense spending bill as well as the other spending bills. House Republicans hope to bring up for a vote this week a stopgap spending bill that doesn't include Biden's aid package for Ukraine. Still, Rep. Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, voiced confidence that Ukraine aid will continue.

Wasteful Everton rue missed chances in Sheffield United draw

For the third time this season Everton created more than enough chances to take all three points, but just like against Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers, they were not clinical enough in the opposition box. "The chance count has been getting better game by game and was decent again today. We got into some really good areas, and we keep looking a threat, but you have to score," Dyche said. "It is just the basics sometimes which are tripping us up, because I felt a lot of the performance was right again. "I feel like it is one that got away, we had enough in the game to win."

BIRMINGHAM, England, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Aston Villa claimed their first three points of the Premier League season as John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Leon Bailey and Jhon Duran scored to secure an emphatic 4-0 home win over Everton on Sunday. "Last week was tough for us, full respect for Newcastle, they did a job on us," McGinn told Sky Sports. Villa opened the scoring through McGinn, who turned in Bailey's cutback in the 18th minute to put the hosts ahead at Villa Park. The Merseyside club lost another key attacker to injury as Alex Iwobi was taken off with what looked like a hamstring issue, before Bailey scored Villa's third. Everton host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday and Villa travel to Scotland to face Hibernian in the first leg of a Europa Conference League playoff tie on Wednesday.

The letter written to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reflects rising partisan tensions in Congress over the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The Democrats, all members of the House Agriculture Committee, told McCarthy that continuing Republican talk of SNAP cuts could jeopardize progress on this year's farm bill. Democrats now are seeking to protect the program from further cuts in the farm bill, which comes up every five years and funds farm commodity and conservation programs as well as SNAP and other food aid. Thompson, has said it will complete a farm bill draft by the end of August. The current farm bill expires on Sept. 30.

The settlement Fox News may pay to Smartmatic could be around $1 billion, experts say. Disney's $177 million settlement for the infamous "pink slime" lawsuit in 2017 dropped to second place. Experts told Insider that the $787.5 million settlement is a strong benchmark for Smartmatic — and that Smartmatic will likely get more. Either way you slice it, using those baseline numbers brings you above the $787.5 million figure Fox paid to settle Dominion's lawsuit. That effort escalated last month when the SEC sued crypto exchanges Coinbase and Binance for failing to register some crypto tokens. Most crypto companies dispute the SEC's jurisdiction. It would expand the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's (CFTC) oversight of the crypto industry, while clarifying the SEC's jurisdiction. With Democrats' support, the bill could have a shot in the Senate. McHenry and Thompson are discussing the proposal with crypto companies, regulators and Democrats, and hope the committees will vote on it before the August recess, senior Republican policy staff said.
