No wonder they’re stressed. And if parents are stressed, kids get stressed. Children were twice as likely to have behavioral, developmental or mental disorders and four times likelier to have poor mental health when their primary caregiver had poor mental health, according to a 2021 study. It’s no surprise that parents’ mental health struggles can hurt our whole society by driving up health care costs and lowering economic productivity, the advisory noted. And if parents are stressed, kids get stressed, too.

Pointed eye contact can force the interrupter to acknowledge youWhen interrupted by Mike Pence during the 2020 Vice Presidential debate, Harris turned her attention to Pence and made pointed eye contact with him. She didn't shrink away from the interaction or internalize his disruption; rather her eye contact demonstrated authority, confidence, and control over the situation. CNN —Months of feverish negotiations, in different cities and at multiple levels, have gotten Israel and Hamas closer to striking a ceasefire deal. “But we are committed to continue the war after the pause in order to achieve the goal of destroying Hamas. It essentially allows Israel – and Hamas – to abandon discussions after the six-week first phase and resume the war. Far-right members of his cabinet have blasted any ceasefire agreement while Israeli reports cite security officials who accuse Netanyahu of sabotaging the negotiations. Earlier this week, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was visiting Israel, said Netanyahu had agreed to the proposal while Hamas had not yet.

After decades of caring for his autistic son, Ryan, Adam Murphy, a 51-year-old father of three from Gloucestershire, England, noticed that Ryan, 27, was becoming a bit more open to trying new things. His son, Mr. Murphy realized, might be able to take his first airplane ride. But traveling would not be without difficulties. “Going to our local supermarket could be a challenge,” said Mr. Murphy. But 94 percent of those surveyed said they would travel more if they had access to options that are certified to recognize and understand the needs of people with autism.

Two days after a police officer murdered George Floyd by kneeling on his neck, the mayor of Minneapolis called the governor, Tim Walz, asking for help. The city needed the Minnesota National Guard. It was not until that Thursday afternoon that Mr. Walz, a Democrat, signed an executive order activating the Guard. That night, before large numbers of troops were deployed, rioters set a police station on fire. Ever since, the governor’s response to those requests has been under scrutiny, even more so now that Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Mr. Walz as her running mate.

Top NewsPresident Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel a “bloodsucking vampire” because of his approach to the war in Gaza. Mr. Erdogan knew Mr. Haniyeh personally. He didn’t name them, but the United States is by far the biggest supplier of weapons to Israel. United States officials have suggested that the authority — a fierce rival of Hamas — could help govern Gaza after the war, an idea Mr. Netanyahu has rejected. Mr. Flake said that despite Mr. Haniyeh’s death, Turkey and the United States still shared the same goal.

Read previewThe labor market is trending in the wrong direction, but it might not be time to sound the alarm just yet. The unemployment rate has risen for four consecutive months and at 4.3%, it's the highest it's been in nearly three years. However, there are some reasons it might be too soon to freak out about the labor market. AdvertisementSatyam Panday, chief US economist for S&P Global Ratings, said in a note published on August 6 that the slowing labor market appears to suggest a "normalization" of a previously red-hot labor market, rather than an "economy that's about to slip into a recession." The labor market might get worseTo be sure, there are plenty of reasons to remain concerned about the state of the labor market.

The death of a 53-year-old Ohio man who died in police custody in April after he repeatedly told officers “I can’t breathe” has been ruled a homicide. Bodycam video shows police approaching Frank Tyson at an AMVETS post in Canton Township, Ohio, on April 18. The officers tell him he is fine and to calm down and stop fighting as he is handcuffed face down. A passing motorist whose face is blurred in the video directed officers to the AMVETS post. It’s a serene sight — except for the one thing Mr. Antezana, a retired oceanographer, cannot ignore. The South American country is the top exporter of farmed salmon to the United States. For more than four decades, Mr. Antezana has watched the industry grow into one of the world’s leading producers of farmed salmon. Last year, farmed salmon was Chile’s second-largest export, generating $6.5 billion in revenue. Most of the farmed salmon eaten in the United States comes from overseas, with almost half from the fjords of Chile.

Investors endured both a stomach-churning rout on Monday and a bounce-back rally on Thursday. Despite that, the S&P 500 ended the week down just 0.04 percent. The big event this week is Wednesday’s inflation data. Investors are anxious after tepid jobs and manufacturing data suggested a slowdown was on the horizon.

There they are: dozens of Chinese ships surrounding a speck of land that a few hundred Filipinos call home. Small wooden fishing boats line a white sand beach on the eastern shore. One paper published just this year sheds some light as to why tablet use could be related to anger outbursts. This is in the context of near-universal use of social media, with up to 95% of kids ages 13 to 17 reporting using social media. American teens report spending a shocking amount of time — nearly five hours each day—on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and other social media apps. There are a number of problems with this level of social media use, one of which is what this time is replacing. Third, for those whose kids already have smartphones and use social media apps, speak with them about the impact of social media on them.
