CNN —Russia and Ukraine exchanged air attacks on Thursday, with Moscow targeting cities across Ukraine and Kyiv striking the Russian border city of Belgorod, one day after Kyiv said it sank another Russian warship off the coast of Crimea. Hours later, Russian authorities said five people were killed and 18 injured, in a missile strike on the Russian city of Belgorod. Ukraine’s strikes on Belgorod on Thursday are the latest in a series of attacks on the city, which has been dragged into Moscow’s conflict. Ukrainian attacks on Russian regions near the border have continued almost daily for over a year, sometimes resulting in civilian casualties. At the end of last year Russia claimed Ukraine killed 24 people in shelling on Belgorod.

Ukraine has virtually no navy of its own, but technological innovation, audacity and Russian incompetence have given it the upper hand in much of the Black Sea. Rather than fold, the Ukrainians declared a unilateral “Black Sea Humanitarian Corridor” for merchant shipping and stepped up its use of maritime drones and missile attacks against Russia’s Black Sea fleet. One-third of the Black Sea fleet has been disabled or destroyed, and the remaining ships rarely venture into the western half of the sea. In August, Russia withdrew some of the Black Sea fleet from its headquarters in Sevastopol to relatively safer ports on the Russian coast. Russia is unlikely to be able to tilt the balance in the Black Sea back in its favor.

The official, who is not authorized to speak on the record, said the operation was carried out on the Russian landing ship Caesar Kunikov by Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (GUR) as part of a joint operation. The attack involved “MAGURA” drones and the vessel was damaged beyond repair, according to the official, who claimed it had sunk in the Black Sea. CNN —After using artificial intelligence to uncover the first word to be read from an unopened Herculaneum scroll, a team of researchers has revealed several nearly complete passages from the ancient text, giving insight into philosophy from almost 2,000 years ago. The Herculaneum scrolls are hundreds of papyri that survived the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. By using computer technology and advanced artificial intelligence, researchers can now analyze the Herculaneum scrolls without unrolling and risking damage to the extremely fragile documents. The first word to be decoded, the Greek word for purple, was detected in October 2023 and can be found within the newly interpreted passages. The charred documents, now referred to as the Herculaneum scrolls, were recovered from a building believed to be the house of Julius Caesar’s father-in-law, according to the University of Kentucky.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A union representing hospitality workers says it has reached a tentative agreement with six more hotel-casinos in downtown Las Vegas and called off a strike deadline for another. Now known as the First Folio, that volume has become a lodestone of Shakespeare scholarship over the centuries, offering the most definitive versions of his work along with clues to his process and plenty of disputes about authorship and intention. In honor of its 400th anniversary, the British Library and Rizzoli recently released a facsimile version of the First Folio. On this week’s episode, The Times’s critic at large Sarah Lyall talks with Adrian Edwards, head of the library’s Printed Heritage Collections, about Shakespeare’s work, the library’s holdings and the cultural significance of that original volume. “If we didn’t have the First Folio, given that all the manuscript versions of the plays are lost, we wouldn’t have plays such as ‘The Tempest’ or ‘Twelfth Night’ or ‘A Winter’s Tale’ or ‘Julius Caesar’ or ‘Antony Cleopatra’ or ‘Macbeth,’” Edwards says. EMPEROR OF ROME: Ruling the Ancient Roman World, by Mary BeardIf social media is to be believed, men can’t stop thinking about the Roman Empire, particularly its “alpha male” elements. Anyone similarly obsessed would do well to pick up a copy of “Emperor of Rome,” an erudite and entertaining new book by the redoubtable classics scholar and feminist Mary Beard. The “good” emperors are invariably wise, kind, prudent and generous, while the “bad” ones are dim, disgusting, decadent and miserly. Did Elagabalus really arrange to smother his dinner guests to death by dropping rose petals from the ceiling? Beard encourages us to be skeptical of all the “preposterous anecdotes,” even as she maintains that such demonizing can tell us something about how power works.
