In 2015, Ryan, the House speaker then, denounced Trump’s proposed Muslim ban as “not conservatism,” “not what this party stands for” and “not what this country stands for.” Then-Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana privately complained that Trump was “unacceptable,” according to the G.O.P. Their point was simply that Trump couldn’t win. So why oppose Trump in 2024? “Because I want to win,” Ryan said, “and we lose with Trump.

Chris Christie on Friday blasted former President Trump as a "con artist" who's "grifting" his supporters. Christie, a fellow GOP WH candidate, took issue with the money a Trump-affiliated PAC is using to pay legal fees. Chris Christie on Friday once again derided former President Donald Trump, calling the ex-commander-in-chief a "con artist" who is "grifting" donors funding his 2024 campaign. Well, what he wants is a free ride for the legal defense he's getting for the criminal charges he personally faces." Trump's one-time White House lawyer told CNN he thinks the former president could be indicted in Jack Smith's Capitol riot investigation as soon as Thursday. Ty Cobb also said he thinks Trump could be charged with conspiracy, obstruction, and aiding insurrectionists. He added that he also thinks there's a chance Trump could be charged with giving aid and comfort to insurrectionists. "There are a variety of ways to charge this that all boil down to the same conduct," Cobb told CNN Tuesday. "No matter what, the most serious case he faces is the January 6 investigation," Cobb told Insider last August.

Chris Christie told CNN Trump is lying to supporters about his indictment. Christie, who is running for president, had a falling out with Trump after the 2020 election. At a rally last month, former President Donald Trump claimed that his indictment for illegally retaining classified information was a "great badge of honor." It accuses Trump, in particular, of misleading his own counsel by falsely representing to them that he was returning any classified information. Christie noted that Trump is now seeking to delay his trial over the matter until after the 2024 election.

Trump has pleaded not guilty in the classified documents case and in another prosecution in New York related to a hush money payment to an adult film star. “President Trump endured an unprecedented raid at his home in Mar-a-Lago. (A special counsel is still investigating classified documents found in Biden’s possession, while the Justice Department closed a case on the possible mishandling of documents found at Pence’s Indiana home.) Ron DeSantis and other Republicans have promised a comprehensive gutting of the FBI, Justice Department and other government agencies in response to what they claim is a wholesale effort to stop Trump winning the 2024 election. Some independent investigations looking at the Trump era have found wrongdoing or mistakes in the FBI.

Summary Russian general says has been dismissedSays top brass betrayed Russian soldiersDefence ministry silent on general's fateSoldiers dying due to lack of artillery, general saysMOSCOW, July 13 (Reuters) - A Russian general said he had been dismissed as a commander after telling the military leadership about the dire situation at the front in Ukraine where he said Russian soldiers had been stabbed in the back by the failings of the top military brass. Popov, who commanded Russian units in southern Ukraine, explicitly raised the deaths of Russian soldiers from Ukrainian artillery and said the army lacked proper counter artillery systems and reconnaissance of enemy artillery. There was no immediate comment from the defence ministry and Reuters was unable to independently verify the authenticity of the voice message. Neither Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin nor General Sergei Surovikin, a deputy commander of Russia's military operations in Ukraine, have been seen in public since the day of the mutiny. For months Prigozhin had been openly insulting Putin's most senior military men, using a variety of crude expletives and prison slang that shocked top Russian officials but that were left unanswered in public by Putin, Shoigu or Gerasimov.

A self-described white nationalist who wrote that Hispanics were “invading” America before fatally shooting 23 people at a Walmart store in El Paso was sentenced on Friday to 90 consecutive life terms for his conviction on federal hate crimes charges. Several of the victims’ relatives had hoped the gunman, Patrick Crusius, would be sentenced to death. Texas prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty when the gunman is tried on murder charges in state court later this year. “Life sentence is not justice for you,” Luis Juarez Jr., who lost his father in the massacre, told the gunman. The federal sentencing in the attack, one of the deadliest on Latinos in U.S. history, follows a plea agreement in February that recommended that the defendant be imprisoned for life in exchange for pleading guilty to hate crimes and weapons charges.

El Paso, Texas CNN —The mass shooter who killed 23 people at an El Paso Walmart in one of the deadliest attacks targeting Latinos in modern US history was sentenced to 90 consecutive life terms by a federal judge on Friday. Defense lawyer Joe Spencer told the court Crusius took responsibility for the harm he had caused and that his rampage was due to severe mental illness. A former Florida sheriff’s deputy who failed to confront the gunman at a Parkland high school five years ago, and instead backed away from the building while the students and teachers inside endured a deadly barrage, was found not guilty of child neglect and other crimes on Thursday. When Mr. Peterson’s behavior was revealed after the shooting, critics — including some fellow police officers — painted him as being too scared to face a heavily armed gunman. His actions outraged the Parkland community, and Mr. Peterson was cast as the central character in a morality tale about cowardice and law enforcement’s duty to protect children. The gunman was sentenced last year to life in prison. Mr. Peterson was the lone armed resource officer assigned to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during the Feb. 14, 2018, massacre.

U.S. Republican presidential candidate and New Jersey governor Chris Christie speaks during the Heritage Action for America presidential candidate forum in Greenville, South Carolina on September 18, 2015. But while much of the GOP establishment softened its stance on Trump in the ensuing months, Christie kept up his criticism. "You better have somebody on that stage who will do to him what I did to Marco, because that's the only thing that's going to defeat Donald Trump," Christie said in March. Ron DeSantis officially joined the Republican primary race, becoming the top non-Trump contender. Burgh Island, located just off the coast of Britain’s south-westerly county of Devon, is on the market for “offers in excess of £15m” ($18.9 million), according to real estate agent Knight Frank. In 1927, it was sold to film producer Archibald Nettlefold, who went on to build a more substantial hotel in the Art Deco style fashionable at the time.

To the Editor:Re “In Vivid Detail, Trump Accuser Tells Her Story” (front page, April 27):Clear evidence suggests that Donald Trump sexually assaulted E. Jean Carroll. As is his pattern, he denies it from a distance on social media but doesn’t come to court and face cross-examination. He did the same thing each time he was impeached: talked tough but hid like a coward — did not testify. How many men would stay home if they were innocent of such a charge? Would not come into court and deny it forcefully, deny it vehemently?
Megan McDonald’s body was discovered near a dirt path on the outskirts of Middletown, N.Y., on March 15, 2003. The search for her killer would last 20 years, one month, and four days. On Wednesday, Edward Holley, 42, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of Ms. McDonald, the New York State Police announced Thursday. Mr. Holley, who had once dated Ms. McDonald, was arrested inside Orange County Correctional Facility in Goshen, N.Y., where he had been incarcerated on unrelated probation violation charges stemming from a narcotics arrest. The murder charges are a dramatic step in a case that has frustrated Ms. McDonald’s family, local law enforcement and Middletown residents for two decades.
Republicans facing tough 2024 races are defending Donald Trump against criminal charges. Democrats are betting their defense of Trump will hurt them in competitive 2024 races. Democrats shouldn't get ahead of the judicial process, said Rodell Mollineau, a cofounder and partner at Rokk Solutions in Washington, DC.
