CNN —The Republican presidential debates have so far produced two big winners – one who will be center stage Wednesday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the fourth GOP matchup, and another who won’t be there at all. The good news for Haley is that she is now running neck-and-neck for second place with the formerly formidable Florida Gov. In skipping the debates, Trump wagered that without his oversized presence, his opponents would primarily train their fire on each other. With Trump absent, Haley, who thus far has mostly eluded frontal attacks, is more likely to get frontrunner treatment from her rivals on Wednesday night. First, Trump appeared to make a new attack on the judge’s clerk in defiance of a gag order. It was not the first time Trump was fined for violating the gag order. As lawyers try the case inside the courtroom, Trump’s conducting his own public trial outside in the corridor. The failed full-court press to install Republican Rep. Jim Jordan as House Speaker revealed ugly examples of how violent threats are becoming normalized inside Trump’s GOP. According to Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas, the strategy behind the threats is to “Attack, attack, attack. In the run-up to that attack, members of the Proud Boys even bragged that they could dress up as Antifa. In the next breath, however, he says that the war in Israel creates moral urgency to push through a Jim Jordan speakership. Any sense that this was a random unhinged person without a partisan political agenda was demolished by his demand that the congressman vote for “Jim Jordan or more conservative.” This caller has explicit right-wing ideological demands.

The impeachment of President Bill Clinton and the double impeachment of President Donald Trump were separated by a little more than 20 years. The only silver lining in this dark cloud over the Biden White House comes from independents’ take on the alternative. As our colleague Harry Enten points out, just 33% of independents think Biden did something illegal, according to a recent Fox News poll.

In the CNN poll published Friday, 55% of all respondents said that Congress should stop authorizing new military aid for Kyiv. Worse, from my perspective, is the shameful fact that Republicans are far more likely to favor an end to aid than Democrats. He also has said the US should prioritize school safety over Ukraine aid. Certainly, the CNN poll suggests a measurable level of Democratic support for military solutions to geopolitical crises. Official opposition to Ukraine aid is most significant in Congress, which does play a role in what happens to the flow of assistance.

CNN —Traditionally committed to national security, global stability and law and order, my Republican Party — yes, I am still a Republican — is now weakening on all three fronts. And House members who cling to his message in an effort to win primary voters may very well suffer defeat in a general election. And then there’s the hostility these GOP extremists are directing at law enforcement, traditionally a wellspring of Republican support. Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio and several equally exercised Republicans members attacked a “weaponized” bureau for serving as an anti-conservative attack dog. On this evidence, I’d say that the extremists are hurting, not helping, the national Republican Party.

Cluster munitions scatter “bomblets” across large areas, which can endanger noncombatants, and these unexploded bombs, called duds, can pose a risk to civilians for decades. Gen. Patrick Ryder said the Russians have been using cluster munitions with a dud rate as high as 40%. But one nation, and one nation only, gets to determine whether to use cluster munitions on its land — Ukraine. Ukrainians deserve everything we can give them — yes, especially cluster munitions — to save their families. President Joe Biden made the right call on cluster munitions for Ukraine and he should be commended for this difficult but necessary decision.
