CNN —Police have identified the shooter in Monday’s attack on a Madison, Wisconsin, private Christian school as a 15-year-old female student, as they investigate the latest school shooting to devastate an American community, claiming the lives of a staff member and another student. Natalie Rupnow – who went by the name “Samantha,” Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said – was found dead when officers responded to Abundant Life Christian School. Evidence suggests the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Barnes said at a news conference late Monday. It’s unclear whether the shooter’s parents owned or possessed the gun used in the shooting, Barnes told CNN. Two such cases followed school shootings at an Oxford, Michigan, high school in 2021 and a Winder, Georgia, high school in September.

US President-elect Donald Trump’s vow to impose tariffs exceeding 60% on Chinese goods could push Beijing to accelerate plans to rebalance its $19 trillion economy, analysts said. However, retail sales, a gauge of consumption, grew at its weakest pace in three months at 3.0% last month, much slower than a 4.8% rise seen in October. “Worries about the poor retail sales may be overdone, as it results from an early start of the ‘Double 11’ shopping festival which frontloaded sales to October,” said Xu Tianchen, senior economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit. “If we smooth the October-November data, then growth should average around 3.9%, which is higher than the previous months,” he added. On Monday, Moody’s Ratings raised China’s GDP growth forecast to 4.2% from 4% for 2025.

Sen. Bernie Sanders says Amazon's focus on speed leads to "uniquely dangerous" workplaces. In a new report, which Amazon disputes, Sanders says its injury rates are worse than it lets on. Only 40% of Amazon's warehouses have that number of workers, it said. The comparison is likely more favorable as "the injury rate for the subcategory of large warehouses is consistently higher than the overall injury rate for the entire warehousing industry," according to the report. The report attributed much of the elevated injury rates to Amazon's "obsession with productivity and speed," which it said drives workers beyond safe limits.

China's retail sales disappointed in November as sentiment in the real estate market weakened further, in another sign that Beijing's efforts to boost the economy have failed to revive sluggish demand. Retail sales rose by 3% in November from a year ago, according to National Bureau of Statistics data released Monday, missing the forecast of 4.6% in a Reuters poll. The slump in real estate investment for the January to November period deepened, shrinking by 10.4% from a year ago, following a 10.3% decline reported in the January to October period. Consumer and business confidence has been hit by a prolonged property downturn, local government debt risks and high unemployment. "The stimulus effect has been short-lived," My Bui, economist at investment management firm AMP said in an email.

And more increases appear to be coming down the pike for the pulped-paper-packed protein: Wholesale prices for chicken eggs soared by nearly 55% last month, and wholesale food prices rose by 3.1% (their highest monthly increase in two years). “Overall grocery price inflation is relatively tame; it’s essentially in line with where it was before the pandemic … nothing alarming,” said Gregory Daco, EY Parthenon’s chief economist. Through November, grocery prices were up 1.6% from the year before, according to the latest CPI report. That breakneck pace resulted in grocery prices being 27% higher now than they were in February 2020, before the onset of the pandemic in the US. “That’s the difficult part — you’re unlikely to see food prices fall significantly and revert to 2019 levels,” Daco said.

Secure messaging apps use end-to-end encryption to protect communications from hackers, surveillance and unauthorized access, so even messaging app providers can't read your messages. There are also paid messaging apps that are end-to-end encrypted, such as Threema. For example, RCS messages using Google Messages are automatically upgraded to end-to-end encryption, but Apple's implementation of RCS on iPhones is not end-to-end encrypted, Horwitz said. For example, Facebook Messenger offers end-to-end encrypted messages, but not in all cases. The app supports end-to-end encryption when messaging other users using Google Messages over RCS, according to the company.

Cut federal workers? The current effort, run by Ramaswamy and Musk, has made a show of eyeing the size of the federal workforce. Hold on a secIn those 40 years of explosive population, spending and debt growth, the size of the federal workforce – this is actually kind of shocking – has stayed pretty much the same, confounding the popular presumption that the number of federal workers must have skyrocketed with federal spending. In fact, the number of full-time federal workers has been relatively static, within a few hundred thousand civilians, since the 1960s. Bush administration and of the federal workforce by hundreds of thousands during the Clinton administration did not markedly change the size of the federal workforce, which has hovered within a few hundred thousand of 3 million workers for decades.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a case about whether a charitable group linked with the Catholic Church can claim a religious exemption from Wisconsin’s unemployment tax system. The Catholic Charities Bureau of the Diocese of Superior appealed after the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in March that its activities are not religious in purpose, meaning the various groups it controls could not obtain the same exemption that strictly religious entities can get. The Wisconsin Labor and Industry Review Commission had concluded that the charitable groups were not “operated primarily for religious purposes” under Wisconsin law. The Supreme Court has a 6-3 conservative majority that is often solicitous of religious claims. Groups representing various Christian denominations and people of other religious faiths, including Jews and Sikhs, also asked the court to take up the case.
