Temperatures are cooling in Japan, but interest in visiting shows no signs of abating, as autumn arrivals continue to outpace pre-pandemic levels. Before the pandemic, China was Japan's largest tourism source market, representing 30% of all arrivals, according to Japanese authorities. Chinese visitors to Japan doubled last month, from 325,645 in September 2023 to 652,300 in September 2024, according to Japan's tourism statistics. From January to September this year, more than 5.2 million visitors from China visited Japan, a 228% increase from 2023, according to preliminary statistics. But that leaves plenty of space to grow to reach the 9.6 million that arrived in 2019.

Treasury yields have ripped higher of late, even as the Federal Reserve continues to cut rates. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield has soared nearly 70 basis points to 4.3% since mid-September, when the Fed cut rates by a half-point. Despite the Fed's latest action, the incoming Trump administration is likely to keep yields elevated, according to Ned Davis Research. Dimitrova noted that rising debt-to-GDP ratio has been closely linked with higher bond yields. The question for investors now is: How long until higher yields start putting pressure on equities?

"The expectation among bond traders coming into the election was that rates would move higher in the event of a Trump victory and especially a red sweep. "The builder stocks are highly sensitive to mortgage rates and mortgage rate expectations. Big builders have been buying down mortgage rates for their customers, but that has been cutting into their margins. Mortgage rates don't follow the Fed, but do react to the central bank's thinking on the economy. Stronger-than-expected economic reports in September and October caused bond yields, and consequently mortgage rates, to move higher.

If Massachusetts' question 5 passes, the tipped wage would slowly increase to become level with the state minimum wage, reaching full parity by 2029. With Election Day underway, income investors should soon find out how their portfolio may — or may not — be affected by the outcome. Harris has said she wants to boost the corporate tax rate to 28% and increase the top rate for long-term capital gains to 28% for those making more than $1 million. That means that those who are buying AMT bonds but not paying AMT are getting free income, he said. Lastly, a higher corporate tax rate could also spur banks and insurance companies to return to the muni market. The companies owned a lot of municipal bonds when the tax rate was 35% and many bought more corporate bonds when the tax rate fell to 21%, Brandon said.

U.S. homeowners are sitting on a record amount of equity, but higher interest rates over the past two years have made them reluctant to tap into it. While mortgage rates don't exactly follow the Fed's rate, home equity lines of credit, or HELOCs, are tied to it. "Over the past 10 quarters homeowners have extracted $476B in equity, exactly half the extraction we'd expect to see under more normal circumstances.
