Tom Trovato and his wife, Trish, paid more than $20,000 and waited two years to experience Viking’s inaugural cruise up the Mississippi River. Leaving in September 2022, it was supposed be a two-week excursion from New Orleans to St. Paul, Minn., a trip of some 1,800 miles. Though they got a full refund, the Trovatos, who live in Surprise, Ariz., have no plans to try again. “If I live to be 125, it might be on my bucket list,” said Mr. Trovato, 79. Inflation is slowing down, but prices are still high — and likely to stay that way. However, even a broad pullback in price increases underscores another bitter reality: We're still paying more for many goods and services with little relief in sight. "Cooling inflation is not the same as a substantial reduction in prices," said Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate. Here's what experts say I should doThis 'bucket strategy' could lower your taxes in retirementIndeed, the rate of price increases for food has subsided. Whether you're mid-career or nearing retirement, it's important to know where you're investing — and how those accounts could impact future taxes, experts say. Many workers are heavily concentrated in tax-deferred savings via a pretax 401(k) plan or traditional individual retirement accounts, which incur regular income taxes on future withdrawals, based on federal tax brackets. However, many advisors push for using a mix of pretax, after-tax Roth and taxable brokerage accounts for more flexibility in retirement. The right mix can provide "a lot of different levers to pull to manage your adjusted gross income," explained certified financial planner Judy Brown at SC&H Group in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore area. Medicare Part B and Part D premiums are based on so-called modified adjusted gross income, which is your adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest, from two years prior.

Waymo's autonomous driver is pretty damn smart, and aside from a few hesitations, the robotaxi offers a smooth, comfortable experience with competitive pricing against other ride-hailing apps. Lloyd Lee/Business InsiderWaymo's 5th generation autonomous driver could be best described as a safe but not an annoyingly cautious driver. It did the same thing to give itself more room when it detected a large parked bucket truck slightly in Waymo's lane. The expectation I had that the Waymo driver would be stiff, as the term "robot taxi" might suggest, was dispelled throughout the rides. The spokesperson said it's also possible I failed to notice something the Waymo car picked up.

Erin Collins, national taxpayer advocate at the Taxpayer Advocate Service, speaks at a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing in Washington, D.C., on May 19, 2021. There's a pileup of tax identity theft cases at the IRS — but the agency is working on a "range of improvements" to speed up service. Identity theft victims have waited more than 22 months for resolution, plus several weeks for refunds. Tax identity theft happens when criminals use stolen personal information to file a fraudulent tax return to claim a refund. Collins reported in January that identity theft victims were waiting 19 months for resolution and refunds, which stemmed from Covid-19 shutdowns and pandemic relief.

Many retirees don't think about taxes until it's time to withdraw funds from a pretax account, which can be a costly mistake, financial experts say. Heavy rains caused roads to flood, submerged cars and subways and cut power to some parts of the city. Heavy rain caused a section of roof at New Delhi’s airport to collapse on Friday, crushing one man to death, and injuring eight others. In Uttarakhand, video posted by ANI News shows vehicles swept away following heavy rain being hauled out of floodwaters. Meanwhile, seasonal monsoon rains usually start in June until September, bringing bands of heavy rains from the southwest that quench fields, nourish crops, and replenish reservoirs. Last June, nearly half a million people in northeast India were affected by severe flooding after heavy rains battered the region.

CNN —The biggest question now that the Supreme Court has decided Donald Trump is entitled to some immunity from prosecution: What happens next in special counsel Jack Smith’s election interference case against the former president? Those are likely to come in the days after the Supreme Court hands the opinion down formally to the federal courts in DC. The Supreme Court said that that Trump’s pressure campaign on Vice President Mike Pence to help him overturn the election is “presumptively” immune, and put the burden on the prosecutors to rebut the presumptive immunity. The Supreme Court’s ruling strongly suggests that those appeals would need to be resolved pre-trial, making it unlikely this case goes to a jury before Americans cast their ballots for president. Jack Smith’s options going forwardIt’s also possible that Smith’s office winnows down his case to bring it in line with the Supreme Court’s opinion.
