A longtime aide to embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams has stepped down. Winnie Greco, director of the city’s Asian Affairs, resigned to her post on Monday after more than a decade working closely with Adams as a liaison between him, in his different capacities, and the Asian American community. Her resignation comes after Greco and several other Adams aides were raided by the FBI earlier this year. Greco is among several top aides marred in controversies coinciding with the Adams investigation. The home of Abbasova, a liaison to the Turkish community, was raided by authorities last year.

Tom Porton’s remit as a teacher at James Monroe High School in the Bronx was English grammar and literature. Mr. Porton died on July 12 at 74 in an assisted living center in the Bronx. No cause was given, but he had been using a wheelchair and an oxygen tank for months, his son, Christopher Porton, said. Mr. Porton’s title at Monroe, coordinator of student affairs, hardly captured his impact. A bearded bear of a man, Mr. Porton was, in 1995, the first New York City teacher inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

This is Street Wars, a weekly series on the battle for space on New York’s streets and sidewalks. Any New Yorker who regularly walks around the city quickly learns which sidewalks are a pleasure to navigate and which are more like obstacle courses. Some are wide enough to stroll two, maybe three people across. Some are so narrow and crowded that it’s easier to just walk in the street, despite the danger. He was able to track those factors using data from the city and images from dash cameras used widely by ride-share drivers.
