Crown, a grandson of industrialist Henry Crown and the chief executive of Henry Crown & Co., was involved in a single-vehicle accident at the Aspen Motorsports Park in Woody Creek, the Pitkin County coroner's office said in a news release. Crown's father, financier Lester Crown, said his son "was driving a race car, and it hit a wall going around a curve," the Chicago Sun-Times reported. "There never was a finer human being in every way," Lester Crown said. Crown's family business, Henry Crown & Co., invests in public and private securities, real estate, and operating companies. "The Crown family is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Jim Crown in an accident earlier (Sunday)," his family said.

The James Beard Foundation presented its coveted culinary awards for 2023 in Chicago on Monday night, with the top awards going to Rob Rubba of Oyster Oyster in Washington, D.C., as outstanding chef and to Friday Saturday Sunday in Philadelphia as outstanding restaurant. Reflecting the awards’ growing clout, Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago and Gov. J.B. Pritzker of Illinois appeared live onstage, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a video, praised the soft power of culinary diplomacy, citing the Beard-award-winning chef Edward Lee’s Maryland crab cakes with gochujang vinaigrette, which were served at a recent state dinner. In some ways, the gala was the eye in a recent storm of controversies about the group’s process and priorities. After an internal audit, the awards process was retooled to reward not only culinary excellence, but equity, leadership, sustainability and community-building.

An Illinois bill could hold companies like Uber and Lyft liable for harm done to passengers. Uber launched a "pressure campaign" to avoid liability for these incidents, the law group behind the bill said. JB Pritzker, it would eliminate an exemption in Illinois law that has protected ride-hailing companies since 2015. Salvi said Illinois exempted ride-hailing companies from the state's common-carrier civil-liability doctrine in 2015 to "allow them to come to market" and "give them an ability to compete." It wasn’t long ago that Brandon Johnson, 47, was a county commissioner and teachers’ union organizer, unknown to many Chicagoans. On Monday he was sworn in as the city’s 57th mayor. He knocked out the incumbent mayor, Lori Lightfoot, in the first round of balloting in February, then beat Paul Vallas, a far more conservative and well-funded Democrat, in the runoff last month. Chicago’s downtown is emptier, its public schools have fewer students, and crime rates remain far higher than before the pandemic. In an interview last week at his transition office along the Chicago River, Mr. Johnson said he was cleareyed about the scope of the challenges awaiting him but confident about the city’s trajectory.

The scenes come as Title 42 is set to expire just before midnight on Thursday. But Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council representing U.S. border agents, confirmed that agents distributed the handouts. Judd said border officials were working to process as many migrants as possible before Title 42 ends. The flyer also said migrants must report to border authorities before accessing El Paso shelters, an assertion advocates said was not true. But hours later, after seeing other migrants return with U.S. paperwork, he lined up at a border patrol station.

WHAT IS TITLE 42? The COVID restrictions, known as Title 42, were first implemented under Republican then-President Donald Trump in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. The Biden administration intends to lift Title 42 next Thursday when the U.S. COVID public health emergency ends. In April, the U.S. Border Patrol apprehended some 183,000 migrants, according to preliminary data provided by Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, a 13 percent increase from March. U.S. border cities are bracing for a possible rise in migrants when Title 42 ends.
