After spending a few months researching places to live, New York City — the borough of Brooklyn in particular — stood out. "Cities like Boston that used to seem affordable are feeling just as expensive as New York City for a fraction of the experience," she added. Rent in New York City and Boston can vary considerably depending on where one looks, but New York is generally more expensive. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,300 compared to $2,600 in Boston, per Zillow. U.S. airlines are reducing their capacity through the end of the year in a bid to cool an oversupplied domestic market that has led to lower fares and reduced profits despite strong summer travel demand. Airlines now expect to grow flying about 4% year over year during the final three months of the year. U.S. airline executives have noted strong demand but a U.S. domestic market that's awash in flights, forcing them to dial back growth plans, which could drive up fares. Reducing capacity could drive up fares for consumers and boost airlines' bottom lines, if travel demand holds up. Getting fares in the market that are profitable to airlines but palatable to consumers is crucial for the industry as consumers have pulled back on spending in other areas.

New York CNN —A toxic mix of surging rental rates and vanishing support for renters has catapulted evictions above pre-pandemic levels in some major cities. Evictions have increased most significantly in Sun Belt cities where housing affordability has worsened and where renters often have fewer protections. Other cities, including Minneapolis (+44%) and Columbus, Ohio (+37%), are also experiencing higher levels of evictions than before the pandemic. Three-quarters of the 34 cities tracked by the Eviction Lab had evictions increase between 2022 and 2023. The vast majority of evictions are for issues related to nonpayment of rent, according to the Eviction Lab.

Joseph Lamberti/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesMany Americans think they're insulated from the effects of global warming. But climate change is already having negative and broad impacts on household finances, according to experts. "There are a bazillion pathways" to adverse financial impact, he added. However, when it comes to financial impact, "I think you could argue the correct answer for [people] is, 'It's already hurting me,'" Krosnick said. How global warming and inflation intersectClimate change also exacerbates inflation, research shows — a dynamic dubbed "climate-flation."

Solutions to the housing crisis often face a small but mighty roadblock: Local residents tend to resist more development in their neighborhoods, and they typically have clout. This has often been true in New York City, where groups of activists and civic leaders — sitting on 59 community boards — have earned a reputation for saying no to new housing. Now, Mark Levine, the borough president of Manhattan, is trying to flip that narrative. He is using his power to appoint board members who are amenable to change — and to replace those who would stand in the way. His efforts have been contentious, with opponents accusing him of capitulating to the real estate industry.
