BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union's executive arm said Monday it is blocking leading U.S. online travel agency Booking from acquiring Sweden's flight booking provider Etraveli Group because it would have allowed it to increase its dominant position on the market on the continent. The European Commission said it had warned Booking Holdings about its concerns but that the remedies offered by the company were not sufficient. “Bans are rare, and today’s decision is in fact the first merger to be blocked this year,” EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said. Now a new site, HotelSlash, joins the quest, promising discounted hotel rates to members and a tracking service that monitors reservations for price dips. “We’re travel hackers at heart,” said Jonathan Weinberg, the chief executive and a co-founder of HotelSlash. Booking roomsUsers can book hotel rooms through HotelSlash by choosing their destination (either a specific hotel or a city), dates of travel and number of travelers. Unlike other booking sites, HotelSlash sends an email with a link to the results, adding a step to the process.

A woman told the BBC that tourists kept showing up at her house after a Booking.com error. Around 20 guests showed up in the last month, thinking her house was a holiday rental, she said. "We just need it to stop somehow," Arsenius told the BBC. The tourists who have turned up are from countries including Algeria, Canada, India, and the US, the BBC reported. The company told the BBC in a statement that scammers are behind the mistake and that it had removed the listing from its site.

One day and 5.5 million views later, the group of about 10 women are spending their European vacation in a villa overlooking the Mediterranean Sea thanks to Airbnb. "Upon investigation, we can now confirm that this fake villa listing was not booked via Booking.com, but instead found on a fake copycat website," the statement read. Social media commentator Jack Appleby wrote in a tweet that the video of Earle thanking Airbnb garnered close to two million views in four hours.
