FBI agents on Thursday arrested an Alabama man for his alleged role in the Jan. 9 hack of the Securities and Exchange Commission's X account, which sent the price of bitcoin spiking by more than $1,000, the Department of Justice announced. The tweet said, "Today the SEC grants approval for #Bitcoin ETFs for listing on all registered national securities exchanges." Shortly afterward, the SEC regained control of its social media account, and announced the tweet was false and the result of a hack. A day after the hack, the SEC approved rule changes that allowed the creation of bitcoin ETFs in the United States. Council, who used the online handles "Ronin," "Easymunny," and "AGiantSchnauzer," allegedly was paid in bitcoin by co-conspirators for his role in the hack.

CNN —Federal regulators granted SpaceX its long-awaited license to move forward with a fifth uncrewed test launch of Starship, the most powerful rocket system ever constructed. The FAA had been expected to hand down a license for this test launch weeks ago. SpaceX has also publicly denied reports that the company violated wastewater regulations with the deluge system, which SpaceX says uses potable water. Notably, the company launched a 2020 test flight of a prototype rocket, called Starship SN8, without obtaining prior approval from the FAA for a public safety waiver. At one point in 2023, for example, he said that he did not blame the FAA for holding up Starship launches.

September's consumer price index report topped the Street's expectations, rising 0.1% from the month prior and increasing at a pace of 2.4% over the past 12 months. In a fact-bending blast of disinformation, the former president is charging Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s White House of the very transgressions of which he stands accused. This is false, but Trump, while president, did repurpose FEMA funds to help finance his hardline immigration policies. But in retrospect, the charade featuring his first White House press secretary Sean Spicer was a harbinger of an administration that bucked fact as an instrument of political power. Trump voters respond to his populism and his evisceration of elites and many sincerely believe he’s a response to a march to the left by the Democratic Party. Both Trump and Harris, who are deadlocked in the polls, are chasing voters who may not habitually follow politics.

ISLAMABAD — Two Chinese nationals were killed in an explosion near the international airport of the southern Pakistani city of Karachi on Sunday night, the Chinese embassy in Pakistan said, in what it described as a "terrorist attack." The Chinese embassy said a convoy from the Port Qasim Electric Power Company was attacked near the airport. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said a Chinese national was also injured and that an investigation was underway. It has previously killed Chinese citizens working in the region and attacked Beijing’s consulate in Karachi.
