BENGALURU, India, Oct 30 (Reuters) - The International Tennis Federation will continue to work towards improving the Davis Cup amid low attendances in some ties in September but the governing body is happy with its existing format, ITF chief David Haggerty told Reuters. "This year the Davis Cup group stages (in September) were great. "We have many fans that are travelling with their teams, so we're excited about the Davis Cup and the format and where we're going." Boosting premier team competitions like the Davis Cup and the women's Billie Jean King Cup is also a big priority. Also, the Grand Slams have said how important both of these team competitions are, so to have their support as well is great," Haggerty said.

Liberty fans have waited 27 seasons for a W.N.B.A. The atmosphere at Barclays Center was electric for New York’s opening postseason game against the Washington Mystics. Those fans were rewarded with a Liberty win, 90-75, behind 29 points from Sabrina Ionescu and 20 from Jonquel Jones. The game started as a tense back-and-forth affair, but the Liberty took a narrow lead into halftime, and they never relinquished it. After the Liberty wrapped up the regular season with a 32-8 record, expectations were high that they could take the championship.

Novak Djokovic takes the U.S. Open title at age 36

(Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)Novak Djokovic won the U.S. Open men's final Sunday, cementing his place as one of the sport's greatest players and fortifying his status as the athlete with its most men's Grand Slam titles. At 36, Djokovic is retirement age in professional tennis. The win may have been redemption for the champion, who lost to Medvedev in the 2021 U.S. Open final. That Russian thwarted Djokovic's attempt to take all four major championships in a calendar year, a rare feat last accomplished in men's open competition by Rod Laver in 1969. That French Open title was the 23rd major singles title for Djokovic, breaking a tie with long-time rival Rafael Nadal, winner of 22 Grand Slam titles.

Led by Coco Gauff and a cast of charismatic upstarts, tennis hit a sweet spot at this year’s U.S. Open with a diverse blend of old and right now, signaling the game is freshly and firmly energized as it enters a new era. At this tournament, the commanding arrival of Gauff, who won the women’s singles title Saturday evening, along with memorable performances by Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, proved that thinking wrong. At the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, a quartet of legends no longer stifled the game, overshadowing the sometimes stalled forward motion of the young players coming behind. You could feel it on the grounds, which filled with so many spectators that it often appeared there was no space to move without bruising a shoulder. With the win, sixth seed Gauff became the first American to win a U.S. Open singles title since Sloane Stephens in 2017. The crowd urged on Gauff, the first American teenager to reach the U.S. Open singles final since Serena Williams in 2001. But Sabalenka blocked out the noise and used her mighty forehand to convert on a break point chance in the fifth game. The Belarusian was helped to another break in the seventh as Gauff double faulted and made two more costly forehand mistakes. Gauff produced an overhead smash to break in the opening game of the third set and converted another in the third game.
