CNN —“Yellowstone” writer-producer Taylor Sheridan has excelled at luring big stars to television with relatively thin material, a formula that feels especially transparent with “Special Ops: Lioness,” his latest series for Paramount+. Zoe Saldaña takes point in this fact-based tale of female special-ops soldiers, which races through the set up by relying on a litany of war-story cliches. “You came to the right place,” she’s told, before acing her training and being quickly drafted to join Joe’s unit. Nevertheless, when it comes to training an audience to come back week after week, “Special Ops: Lioness” feels about as basic as it gets. “Special Ops: Lioness” premieres July 23 on Paramount+.

When you sit at a campfire and look up at the stars, even the tiniest pinpricks of light that you see are massive furnaces, producing intense heat. But hidden among these infernal embers are celestial bodies so dim that they’re invisible to the naked eye. One such star, a brown dwarf smaller than Jupiter, recently became the coldest star ever to be detected with a radio telescope. At a paltry 797 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s cooler than the average campfire: an ideal star for roasting marshmallows. The existence of brown dwarfs was hypothesized 60 years ago, but “they were very hard to find, because they’re not very bright,” Dr. Murphy said.

A big start for stocks in the first six months of 2023 could be a signal that even bigger things are on the way for the rest of the year. Historically, a positive first half has led to gains in the second half 72% of the time, above the normal 69% rate in data cited by CFRA that goes back to 1945. However, history also has shown that the stronger the start, the stronger the finish. The scenario has seen gains 82% of the time. "With this year's S & P 500 gain of nearly 15% YTD through June 16, history suggests investors hold onto their hats, since a stellar H2 may be in order," Sam Stovall, CFRA's chief investment strategist, said in a client note Tuesday.

Advocates had hoped the shocking murder case would represent a watershed moment in India’s approach to violence against women. In fact, as others like Swati Maliwal, chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, point out, such crimes are becoming more common. Violence against women has prompted past protests with calls for greater government action. She’s concerned that it suggests a societal apathy towards violence against women and girls, or worse, acceptance. “I think why the recent case is so shocking is it happened so blatantly in a public place,” Kothari said.

After last week's bank run on SVB, many limited partners for VC funds had lots of questions. One LP was unhappy with how VCs in the funds they back handled the SVB crisis. Some LPs are wary of the tech industry's heavy reliance on the bank. But after last week's bank run on Silicon Valley Bank, caused in large part by warnings from several prominent VCs to their portfolio companies to get their money out of the bank, LPs have mixed feelings about how it all went down. "There were a lot of fintech companies in particular, and banking companies that banded together to come up with solutions overnight."
Powering AI Dungeon's text-generation software was the GPT language technology offered by the Microsoft -backed AI research lab OpenAI. The high cost of training and "inference" — actually running — large language models is a structural cost that differs from previous computing booms. Many entrepreneurs see risks in relying on potentially subsidized AI models that they don't control and merely pay for on a per-use basis. Companies making the foundation models, semiconductor makers, and startups all see business opportunities in reducing the price of running AI software. "Latitude is going to continue to evaluate all AI models to be sure we have the best game out there."

‘Spirited’ Review: A Caterwauling ‘Christmas Carol’

Will Ferrell was part of a woeful musical-comedy misadventure in 2005, when he played a supporting role in the big-screen version of Broadway’s “The Producers,” one of those movies that seemed to be forgotten the week after it opened. Now Mr. Ferrell is taking his chances again: At age 55, he fancies himself a Broadway baby. When a big star wants to do a musical, he’ll rarely be dissuaded. Make that two stars: Ryan Reynolds , who like Mr. Ferrell has a singing voice that can charitably be described as thin and dances in a way that suggests great effort, has joined him in woofing and warbling in the umpteenth adaptation of “A Christmas Carol .” “Spirited” is in theaters this week ahead of its streaming release Nov. 18 on Apple TV+, but nothing in the film supports the adjectival promise of the title. Fans of Mr. Ferrell and Mr. Reynolds have likely never seen them in anything this earnest and tacky before, and are liable to feel somewhere between betrayed and stunned.

Streamers like Netflix and HBO Max are spending less aggressively on content after years of big outlays. And Netflix, known for its astronomic content bill, is holding its budget at $17 billion for 2022 and likely 2023 after several years of increases. Content spending across Hollywood typically slows down in the fourth quarter. "Now, networks and studios are going to go to their super-experienced person — they're going to take fewer chances on that emerging voice," one filmmaker said. "I don't think they're going to up the volume at HBO, but they're still going to make big shows."
