Antarctic ice levels undergo 'massive decrease', data shows
  + stars: | 2023-07-10 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
GENEVA, July 10 (Reuters) - Antarctic sea ice levels reached record lows last month, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Monday, a development climate change experts described as worrisome. WMO said that Antarctic sea ice levels last month - the hottest June ever recorded -- were at their lowest since satellite observations began, at 17% below average. "We're used to seeing these big reductions in sea ice in the Arctic, but not in the Antarctic. This is a massive decrease," Michael Sparrow, Chief of World Climate Research Programme, told reporters in Geneva. "Alarm bells are ringing especially loudly because of the unprecedented sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic."

Then, a deep dive into MrBeast and what his YouTube empire says about the future of the internet. Reddit came along and said, oh, we need to protect Reddit from the rise of these large language models. So I don’t think they’re totally out of the woods. But I don’t think people would say it was a golden age for how safe the platforms fell to use. But I want to challenge you on this, because I don’t necessarily think that it’s a bad thing if we have past peak trust and safety.

June 15 (Reuters) - Supply-chain disruptions are easing as retail prices for vehicles are softening, a top Ford Motor (F.N) executive said on Thursday. Lawler said Ford's recent decision to join Tesla's EV charging network will not require additional capital investment on Ford's part. Owners of Ford electric vehicles will gain access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in North America, starting in early 2024. General Motors (GM.N) last week followed Ford's lead in joining the Tesla charging network. Lawler said Ford sees continued strength and growth in its combustion vehicles "for the next few years" as it ramps up investment in and production of electric vehicles.

MSCHF, the creative collective responsible for the Big Red Boots that clomped across New York Fashion Week in February, is thinking smaller for its next accessory release. On Wednesday, the group plans to unveil its Microscopic Handbag, a specklike rendition of Louis Vuitton’s OnTheGo tote. This is not the kind of tote bag that can be filled up with vegetables at the farmers’ market: At most, it could be used to carry around a platelet or two. Kevin Wiesner, the chief creative officer of MSCHF, positioned the bag as a commentary on the impracticality of ever-shrinking luxury handbags. “I think ‘bag’ is a funny object because it derives from something rigorously functional,” he said in an interview.

Apple told Stern any discomfort she encountered after wearing Vision Pro goggles may have been because it only had limited-sized "light seals" at the demonstration space. Apple's Vision Pro is constructed of aluminum alloy and a snazzy single piece of exterior glass, which is why it looks so much nicer than the competition. Apple's new Vision Pro headset was announced on Monday at the company's WWDC conference.

Takeaways From Nikki Haley’s Mild CNN Town Hall

Compared with CNN’s explosive, much-criticized town-hall-style event with Mr. Trump last month, this one was a throwback to earlier, less combative times. Jake Tapper, the anchor who moderated, never found the need to correct Ms. Haley. The two big red elephants in the room, Mr. Trump and Gov. Both Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis, who once supported similar changes, now say they won’t touch the programs. But she displayed less of the punitive rhetoric on the issues that Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis have made crucial to their messages.

Dollar General cut its profit estimate for 2023 on Thursday. The first of two jarring pieces of evidence comes in the form of first-quarter earnings from Dollar General. The fact that they're not immune to a broader pullback in consumer spending is a big red flag for the US economy. Speaking of which, a bit further up the affluence scale, Macy's turned in an earnings stinker of its own. The department-store giant offered disappointing second-quarter projections and — like Dollar General — slashed full-year projections.

DeSantis hasn't said whether he thinks Trump lost the 2020 election. Asked by a reporter on Monday to directly acknowledge Trump lost, DeSantis stated only the fact that in 2020 "Biden becomes president." Trump continues to falsely deny that he lost the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. But DeSantis, who is consistently the only Republican to poll second to Trump in a hypothetical 2024 field, hasn't directly said he believes Trump lost in 2020. In Iowa over the weekend, DeSantis subtly jabbed at Trump for his fixation on the 2020 election.
CNN —America’s most-watched PBS station is on the verge of going dark. The Republican governor of Oklahoma, Kevin Stitt, recently vetoed a bill that would have renewed the license and provided millions in funding for the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority, the statewide PBS network that reaches more than 650,000 viewers a week. The fundamental goal of PBS KIDS remains supporting children as they learn and grow through programming they have come to know and love. While the Oklahoma station receives $6.3 million in funding from donors and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, $2.9 million comes from the state government. It produces and airs the “Oklahoma News Report,” the only state news program that reaches every county in Oklahoma.
Secretariat, with jockey Ron Turcotte up, passed his rival, Sham, in the homestrech and ran away with the 99th Kentucky Derby in record time on May 5, 1973. Rumors swirled: he was injured, he lost a step during his 3-year-old season, he just wasn’t the superhorse everyone thought he was, his Wood rival Sham would be the true king of 1973. His rival Sham sat near the lead and made his move to catch the leader, Shecky Greene, at the top of the homestretch. Then, and only then, did Turcotte ask his horse for more, and Secretariat, like the finest of racecars, found another gear. Nearly half of the horses in Saturday’s Derby have Secretariat in their bloodlines.

In “Iron Man 3,” superhero Tony Stark is haunted by the existential question of whether the suit makes the man or the man makes the suit. The fashion industry depends on the former—selling clothing that it promises can transform and complete you. And recently, garments have continually trumped their wearers, with interchangeable influencers modeling attention-grabbing trends like micro-kilts, Big Red Boots and bra tops. But these past few days at New York Fashion Week, the message is that, though fashion can help, ultimately it’s the wearer that elevates a look. Even larger-than-life Rihanna in a notably casual, yet punchy, Super Bowl halftime look echoed the theme from afar.
