Third-party candidates have played a big role in deciding key presidential battleground states in the last few years — meaning which (and how many) candidates will actually be on the ballot state by state could matter a lot in a close election. After spending millions to get on state ballots, Kennedy has attempted to pull back since endorsing former President Donald Trump. And there are still other third-party candidates, including some familiar faces and some new ones, whose presence on key state ballots could affect the November results. In 2016, 6% of all voters cast votes for third-party candidates, a dynamic that helped to lower the share of the vote Trump needed to win in key battleground states. But this is where third-party candidates’ battleground ballot access efforts stand at the moment.

In prior years, the administration has bundled these requests with supplemental funding for disaster relief, Covid-19 and military aid for Ukraine, which made them more politically unpalatable on Capitol Hill. The language proposed by the Biden administration for enhanced Secret Service funding through the 2024 election has appeared in at least one Republican-sponsored funding bill, lending credence to the belief that such an effort would see bipartisan support on the Hill. In a radio interview that aired Tuesday, President Joe Biden reiterated his belief that the Secret Service needs more personnel to handle an elevated threat environment for political candidates. “One of the things is we need more resources,” Biden said. “We need more agents, we need more protection, we need to expand the availability of help.”Biden described the climate as “up across the board,” describing how increased security had changed his style of campaigning.

CNN —The North American Aerospace Defense command intercepted Russian military aircraft flying near Alaska three times over the last week in what appears to be an uptick in activity amid tensions between the US and Russia. The US and Canada, which make up NORAD, first intercepted a pair of Russian military aircraft on Wednesday. On Friday, a pair of TU-142s, Russian reconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft, were detected by NORAD. One day later, the US and Canada intercepted two Russian IL-38 planes, another type of reconnaissance and anti-submarine military aircraft. The aircraft this past week did not enter US or Canadian sovereign airspace, NORAD said.

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks during a visit to the United Association Local 190 Training Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S., September 6, 2024. Known as the de minimis loophole, the trade provision allows packages with a value of less than $800 to enter the United States with relatively little scrutiny. Over the past decade, the number of de minimis shipments has exploded, from roughly 140 million to more than a billion, according to a White House estimate. Each individual package is typically worth far less than $800, and thereby qualifies for the de minimis exemption. The Biden administration also called on Congress to pass legislation to overhaul the original de minimis rules.

And for Trump, flipping Pennsylvania — a state he narrowly won in 2016 but lost in 2020 — would give him a broader path to winning back the White House. Trump tried to bring fracking into focusIn 2019, when Harris was running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, she voiced support for a ban on hydraulic fracturing — or fracking. And recognizing the political potency of the issue, Harris on Tuesday sought to distance herself from her past comments by pointing to her record as vice president. From 1992 to 2012, only Democratic presidential nominees carried the state. In the state's Real Clear Politics polling average, Harris and Trump are both currently tied at 47.6% support.

Donald Trump’s campaign is expecting that Vice President Kamala Harris will get a “bump” coming out of the Democratic National Convention but generally does not see the week-long event changing the overall trajectory of the race. Trump's speech last month at the Republican National Convention lasted a record-setting 93 minutes. Kamala Harris during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, on Aug. 19, 2024. This digital ad posted by Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania, about a week before Biden eventually dropped his bid, was the blueprint. Almost immediately, Democrats saw a surge of support — mostly from disillusioned Democratic voters. As of this writing, it’s now Republicans in battleground states and districts who are begging their nominee to change course. As for the GOP, Trump and his allies have done everything they can to mold the GOP in Trump’s image, and anyone who doesn’t share that view has essentially been purged. Of course, the real challenge for both Republicans will be figuring out how to navigate Trump’s appearances in their respective states.

CNN —Voters keep telling pollsters that their economic insecurities are the biggest issue in the 2024 election. Former President Donald Trump will try to make a case against Kamala Harris’ role in the Biden economy on Wednesday in North Carolina. President Joe Biden dedicated his domestic agenda to restoring economic fairness and sought to revive manufacturing and repair the country’s crumbling infrastructure. As the effective incumbent in this race, Harris is vulnerable to any sudden shifts in the economic outlook. But with Trump seeking an opening to define her negatively — especially on the economy — Harris must act fast.

Freed from the campaign trail and the grinding pursuit of another term, President Biden traveled to New Orleans on Tuesday to focus on a project close to his heart: the “moonshot” effort to sharply cut cancer deaths in the United States that he carried over from his time as vice president and has become a hallmark of his presidency. Speaking at Tulane University, Mr. Biden and the first lady, Jill Biden, announced eight research centers, including one at Tulane, that will collectively receive $150 million in research awards aimed at pioneering new methods of precision cancer surgery. Before addressing a crowd on campus, the president and the first lady met with a team of researchers who demonstrated the technology under development at Tulane. It uses imaging of cells on tumor sites to verify for surgeons that cancer cells have been fully removed and to reduce the need for follow-up surgeries. Standing in front of a sign reading “curing cancer faster,” Mr. Biden described touring cancer centers in Australia and Ireland, and being frustrated by a lack of international collaboration.

Pascrell is now receiving care at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J., the source said. Pascrell checked himself into a hospital on July 14 with a fever, which his staff said may have been caused by a respiratory illness. At 87 years old, Pascrell is the second-oldest House member, only behind retiring Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Calif. Former President Donald J. Trump has taken his new obsession with the large crowds that Vice President Kamala Harris is drawing at her rallies to new heights, falsely declaring in a series of social media posts on Sunday that she had used artificial intelligence to create images and videos of fake crowds. The crowds at Ms. Harris’s events, including one in Detroit outside an airplane hangar, were witnessed by thousands of people and news outlets, including The New York Times, and the number of attendees claimed by her campaign is in line with what was visible on the ground. Mr. Trump falsely wrote on his social media site, Truth Social, that “there was nobody at the plane, and she ‘A.I.’d’ it.”A spokesman for the Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment. Mr. Trump has struggled to find his political footing in the weeks since President Biden decided to step aside and Ms. Harris replaced him atop the Democratic ticket: Mr. Trump questioned Ms. Harris’s racial identity at a conference for Black journalists, he later attacked Brian Kemp, the popular Republican governor in the key swing state of Georgia, and he has seen new polling that puts him behind Ms. Harris in several key states. The Harris campaign has begun to mock Mr. Trump for his frustration over her crowds, one of which, it said, topped 15,000 people at an event in the Phoenix area on Friday.

When President Biden campaigned in Michigan last month, Representative Elissa Slotkin, the Democrats’ nominee for the state’s open Senate seat, was nowhere to be found. But on Wednesday night, just weeks after that no-show, Ms. Slotkin announced her full-throated support for her party’s new presidential ticket at a Detroit rally. Tim Walz of Minnesota, Ms. Slotkin concluded her speech by delivering her final punch at the Republicans’ vice-presidential nominee, Senator JD Vance of Ohio. Ms. Slotkin is not alone in recognizing the new political landscape since Mr. Biden decided to end his re-election bid. The new energy and rapid coalescing of Democrats behind Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz have drastically changed the strategies of both Democrats and Republicans alike in down-ballot races.

U.S. President Joe Biden expressed hope Iran would stand down despite its threat to avenge the assassination of Hamas' leader in Tehran, as fears mounted that Israel's war against Palestinian militants in Gaza could escalate into a wider Middle East conflict. Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel for Haniyeh's killing, and they, together with Hezbollah, have vowed revenge. Asked by reporters whether Iran would stand down, Biden said on Saturday in response to a shouted question, "I hope so. Seeking to bolster defenses in the Middle East in response to threats from Israel's foes, the Pentagon said on Friday it would deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the region. Haniyeh's death was one in a series of killings of senior Hamas figures as the Gaza war nears its 11th month, and it fuelled concern that the conflict in Gaza was turning into a wider Middle East war.

Officials quickly moved to tailor the Chicago convention to Harris with only four weeks, in part drawing from the 2008 convention when Barack Obama accepted the nomination given the historic candidacy of Harris herself. Nominee acceptance speeches for the convention, which begins the week of August 19, are currently scheduled for that Wednesday and Thursday night, according to convention officials. Hollywood gets on boardThe Hollywood community is clamoring to support Harris at the DNC, according to numerous agents, publicists and Democratic strategists who spoke to CNN. No performers have been set yet, though various representatives for musicians have been in talks with the Harris campaign, according to two sources. U.S. Supreme Court Justices attend as U.S. President Joe Biden delivers the State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., March 7, 2024. President Joe Biden on Monday unveiled a three-pronged proposal to reform the Supreme Court, a policy area that he said will be a focus of his remaining months in office. Biden's proposed ethics code comes after several Supreme Court justices, including Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, were caught in scandals involving undisclosed financial gifts that posed major conflicts of interest. As he works to cement his legacy in the just under six months he has left as president, Biden said that overhauling the Supreme Court will be a priority. "I'm going to call for Supreme Court reform because this is critical to our democracy," Biden said in a national address from the Oval Office last Wednesday.
