The nation is finally beginning to see that “country music is for everyone,” and Mickey Guyton loves it. Guyton, 41, has been a trailblazer in country music for years: In 2021, she became the first Black woman to co-host the Academy of Country Music Awards and the first Black woman solo artist to be nominated for a Grammy in a country music category. “Country music is a very universal music about life, and we’re all living, right? Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” will compete for best country album at the Grammys, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “But there’s one thing you can’t stop: It’s the amount of people that are singing country music.

Scientists grow mystery tree from 1,000-year-old seed

But it doesn’t mean that scientists aren’t interested in bringing the past back to life in some form. Dig thisThe tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Remarkably, the tree thrived and now stands 10 feet (3 meters) tall, although it has never flowered or produced fruit. Using DNA sequencing, the researchers identified the mystery tree as part of the Commiphora genus, but its exact species is unknown and likely extinct. Scientists aim to extract DNA from the remains to learn more about those buried there and whether they were related.

CNN —Oklahoma is soliciting bids for Bible suppliers to provide their wares for the state’s education department – and the specific requirements fit Bibles endorsed by former President Donald Trump. The RFP requirements also say that the Bibles must have the Old and New Testaments, and include copies of the US Constitution. The Bibles sell for $60 online and, through his endorsement, the former president receives some of the proceeds, according to Oklahoma Watch. The RFP from superintendent Ryan Walters is part of his ongoing push to put Bibles in every classroom. In a statement, Oklahoma State Department of Education Director of Communications Dan Isett said the RFP was consistent with the “norms of state procurement.

Lost biblical tree resurrected from 1,000 year-old seed
  + stars: | 2024-10-03 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —Botanists have grown a long-lost tree species from a 1,000-year-old seed found in a cave in the Judean Desert in the 1980s. But the scientists conducting the new research weren’t able to identify the type of tree from the seed alone. However, the sample didn’t match any of the known Commiphora species in her database. The tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Yet the tree, which is related to the myrrh tree that’s famed for its resin, never gave off any kind of scent.

Key lines from the Vance-Walz vice presidential debate
  + stars: | 2024-10-02 | by ( Zachary B. Wolf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +19 min
Here are key lines from the debate, which was hosted by CBS News in New York City on Tuesday. Vance said many of the things Trump says, but he did it with a control that Trump lacks. The only answer is during the four years that Donald Trump was president. We have a historic immigration crisis because Kamala Harris started and said that she wanted to undo all of Donald Trump’s border policies. We could come together and solve this if we didn’t let Donald Trump continue to make it an issue.

But that has not stopped Trump from recycling some of the same dark portents about a Kamala Harris presidency. Even God was not safe from a Biden presidency, Trump warned. You’re going to have to learn to speak Chinese,” Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt in August 2020. "She wants no Merry Christmas," Trump said. CNN —Almost three decades ago, Richard Hays, a United Methodist minister and the soon-to-be dean of Duke Divinity School, wrote what quickly became the go-to traditionalist Christian argument against same-sex marriage. Fuller Theological Seminary, where Christopher Hays is a professor, also demands agreement with a faith statement that opposes same-sex marriage. Even as support for same-sex marriage has plateaued in the last few years, recent surveys from Gallup find that more than one in five Gen Z Americans identify as LGBTQ, and nearly 90% of Americans under 30 years old support same-sex marriage. The reversal from Hays certainly will not settle the debate among Christians when it comes from same-sex marriage. But I hope it makes opponents of same-sex marriage at least pause and wonder — is there a faithful path forward that makes room for people like me?

It was a stunning denouement for the self-proclaimed appointed son of God, a Filipino evangelist preacher who had millions of followers and influence at the highest levels of government but was wanted by Philippine authorities and the FBI on charges of human trafficking and sexual abuse. That changed in March, when a Philippine court ordered the arrest of Quiboloy and several other people on suspicion of child and sexual abuse and human trafficking. After he surrendered, officials said, Quiboloy was flown by military transport to Manila, the capital, and placed in police detention. After he won the presidency in 2022, Marcos set about dismantling Duterte’s power alliances, including the one with Quiboloy. Marcos said that he did not understand Duterte’s apology but that it was “her prerogative” to make it, local media reported.

CNNOver the last few decades, a growing number of Christians have left traditional, predominantly White evangelical churches. The post-evangelical movement predates former President Donald Trump’s political rise, but has been accelerated by his alliance with White conservative evangelical leaders. White evangelicals have been a key part of the Republican coalition since the 1980s. The exit polls estimated that 26% of 2016 voters and 28% of 2020 voters were White evangelicals. Still, Trump has maintained overwhelming support among White evangelicals since consolidating their support during the 2016 Republican primary.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the share of Americans who were absent from work because of child care difficulties matched the all-time record for August. At the same time, employment in child care services has not been nearly enough to match the demand, according to Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, who highlighted the statistic in a note following Friday’s job report. The issue largely stems from the havoc created by the pandemic, which prompted many child care facilities to shut down, Pollak said. Consumer payments for child care are up at least 32% since 2019, a recent Bank of America study found. Child care advocates say that almost 10% of the state’s day care sites or home-based programs have shuttered since the pandemic.

The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. WHY WE’RE HEREWe’re exploring how America defines itself one place at a time. In San Francisco, a city that loves the new, many residents are flocking to an old cathedral. Aug. 10, 2024San Francisco residents have always celebrated the new, the innovative, the cutting-edge. But these days, they are flocking to a surprising venue for the cool factor: a church that is older than the city itself. But in the past few years, it has boomed for reasons that have nothing to do with the Bible.

School districts also cannot ask students about their immigration status if it may be used to deny them access to a free public education, according to U.S. Department of Education guidance.
