Prachanda, who replaces Sher Bahadur Deuba of the Nepali Congress party, will step down in 2025, making way for the UML to take over the office, local media reported. Remaining work of distribution of key other posts and ministries is still to be worked out," Dev Gurung, the general secretary of Prachanda's Maoist Centre party told Reuters after a meeting of the new coalition. The new coalition comes to power hours after Prachanda,68, surprisingly walked out of the ruling alliance led by Deuba of the Nepali Congress party. Deuba and Prachanda had both campaigned in the November election pledging to keep the old alliance intact for several years. The Nepali Congress party will be the main opposition controlling 89 seats.
Electric vehicle batteries are gaining "critical importance" as part of the energy transition, according to Goldman Sachs, which named a number of stocks set to benefit as countries diversify their supply chains away from China. China currently accounts for around 60% of global EV battery demand, but this share is set to decline to 30% by 2030, Goldman said in a Nov. 14 report. Significant investment — to the tune of $160 billion for the U.S and EU — is required to develop a fully localized battery supply chain, without China's involvement, Goldman said. In Europe, Goldman likes Freyr Battery , which it says is a major beneficiary of the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act. "We view FREYR as well positioned to succeed in the future, due to their focus on [lithium iron phosphate] batteries that are designed for battery storage," Goldman said.
Global climate talks approached crunch time on Friday, the final scheduled day of negotiations that are expected to go past their deadline as chances of a deal still looked unclear. The document contained few new proposed solutions for curbing oil and gas emissions and repairing damage caused by climate change. The proposal would tie compensation for climate disasters to tougher emissions cuts, two of the thorniest issues at the meeting. In climate negotiations, loss and damage refers to the idea that rich nations, which have historically done the most to contribute to climate change, should compensate developing countries most impacted. Antigua and Barbuda’s environment minister says they have concerns about the EU proposal, while the environmental advocacy group Action Aid called it a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” because it doesn’t go far enough.
