The UAW on Friday invited Biden to visit workers on its picket lines, and said that it would expand its Detroit strike to parts distribution centers across the United States at General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). "It’s very rare for a president to visit strikers," said Jeremi Suri, a historian and presidential scholar at the University of Texas at Austin. The White House said the president appreciates the UAW invitation, saying Biden will continue to fight for workers, but but did not immediately commit to visiting the strikers. Biden said the automakers should "go further to ensure record corporate profits mean record contracts for the UAW," echoing sentiments by union leaders. Workers on the picket lines had mixed feelings over whether Biden should visit.

UAW President Shawn Fain, in a Facebook live event, said that by targeting distribution centers the strike becomes a nationwide event. Fain said Ford had improved its contract offer, including boosting profit sharing and agreeing to let workers strike over plant closures but said the union still has "serious issues" with Ford. Nearly 13,000 UAW workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio on Sept 15. "GM and Stellantis are looking at stockholder value and Ford is looking a lot more long-term that they have to make friends with labor." Fain said on Friday that the union had negotiated the elimination of lower wage tiers in some components facilities at Ford and GM.

"Stellantis and GM in particular are going to need some serious pushing," Fain said Friday. Fain said Ford had improved its contract offer, including boosting profit sharing and agreeing to let workers strike over plant closures but said the union still has "serious issues" with Ford. "This is like union 101 in terms of divide and conquer, and put more pressure on GM and Stellantis," Ives added. GM, Ford and Stellantis have said they are making contingency plans for further U.S. work stoppages. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three Ford plants in the country.

REUTERS/Michael Swensen Acquire Licensing RightsCHICAGO, Sept 21 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers (UAW) members rallied against the Detroit Three automakers in multiple U.S. states on Thursday afternoon as Friday's deadline loomed for a threatened expansion of the union's strikes. The UAW last week launched unprecedented, simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant each of General Motors (GM.N), Ford (F.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). UAW workers want to end a tiered wage structure that they say has created a large gap between newer and older employees, forcing some to work two jobs to make ends meet. On Thursday morning, Fain posted a video message on X, formerly known as Twitter, to UAW members about the Friday deadline, showing scenes from several Hollywood movies with the characters saying "tick tock." Fain has said Detroit automakers have not shared their huge profits with workers while enriching executives and investors.

The automakers have proposed 20% raises over 4-1/2 years, while the UAW is seeking 40%. Talks continued between union representatives and company management on the sixth day of a coordinated walkout, a day after Ford (F.N) averted a strike by Canadian workers. The UAW launched a strike against Ford, General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis last week, targeting one U.S. assembly plant at each company. UAW workers also want to end a tiered wage structure that they say has created a large gap between newer and older employees, forcing some to work two jobs to make ends meet. We’re serious about this,” said Victor Holloway, 24, of Westland, Michigan, who has worked at the Ford plant in Wayne, Michigan, since 2021. DETROIT, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Talks were ongoing on Wednesday between union representatives and company management in the sixth day of the United Auto Workers strike at the Detroit Three automakers, a day after Ford (F.N) averted a walkout by Canadian workers. The UAW launched a strike against Ford, General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) last week, targeting one U.S. assembly plant at each company. The UAW's coordinated U.S. action led to about 12,700 workers going on strike last week. Ford reached a last-minute deal to avoid a walkout at its Canadian operations late on Tuesday. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three of Ford's plants in that country if a deal was not reached by late on Tuesday.

"We leveraged our union's most powerful weapon: the right to strike," Unifor said of the tentative deal in a statement. Unifor had sought improved wages and pensions, as well as support in the transition to electric vehicles and additional investment commitments by Ford. The Canadian union will now turn to getting deals with General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI), whose deadlines had been extended while the Ford talks proceeded. The UAW has said it will announce strikes against more U.S. plants on Friday if no serious progress is made in talks with automakers. Many UAW workers are most concerned about the tiered wage structure that they say has created a yawning gap between newer and older employees, forcing some to work two jobs to make ends meet.

The nearly week-old United Auto Workers strike against Ford (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI) is viewed as a signal of the strength of the U.S. labor movement that has garnered national support from Americans. The UAW members from two striking plants gathered in Toledo were rolling out for the one-hour, 45-mile (72 km) drive to Wayne, Michigan, where Ford workers also walked off the job last week. In Michigan, Ohio and Missouri, the three states where workers are currently striking, models made by the Big Three dominate the leaderboard of new auto registrations. The United States is still the second-largest car market in the world, trailing only China. Union membership has fallen steadily over several decades in the United States.

US auto labor talks intensify near strike deadline

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Talks between the Detroit Three automakers and United Auto Workers union are nearing a Thursday night deadline to reach a deal on a new contract before a potential walkout by 146,000 U.S. autoworkers. Coordinated strikes would mark the first-ever simultaneous labor stoppage at all three Detroit automakers and one of the largest U.S. industrial labor actions in recent years. LAST DAYS BEFORE DEADLINEThe UAW on Friday had rejected revised offers from Stellantis, General Motors (GM.N) and Ford Motor (F.N). GM said Tuesday CEO Mary Barra decided not to attend Business Roundtable meetings in Washington on Wednesday and Thursday because of the labor talks. Ford's annual filing showed about 57,000 of its hourly employees in the United States were represented by the UAW, while the UAW represents about 43,000 U.S. hourly workers at Stellantis. Stellantis last week offered its U.S. hourly workers a 14.5% wage hike over four years, but no lump sum payments. Fain also is aiming to get agreements that would allow the UAW to represent hourly workers at joint-venture EV battery plants opened or planned by the Detroit Three. In fiscal 2019, GM's fourth-quarter profit took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike that shut down its profitable U.S. operations. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers have gone on till the strike deadline and beyond in past years.

"Hybrid is a great alternative to a pure electric vehicle (and) it's an easier sell to a lot of customers." Interest in hybrids is rebounding as consumer demand for pure electrics has not accelerated as quickly as expected. Sales of pure electrics will claim about 37%, leaving combustion vehicles — including so-called “mild” hybrids — with a nearly 40% share. In addition to new pure electric models coming soon, "we are very bullish on hybrids going forward," a spokesperson said. Increasing the age limit by two years would also align pilot retirement with the minimum federal retirement age, allowing them to receive full social security benefits. But the specific question of increasing the retirement age to 67 was never brought to the floor for a vote. "This is a coup by junior pilots against senior pilots," said Allen Baker, who retired as a United Airlines pilot in June. Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for American Airlines pilots union, said pilots seeking higher retirement age want to keep earning longer. But United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has said lifting the retirement age would not solve the pilot shortage.

Wheels Up avoided a possible bankruptcy when it secured backing from investors on Tuesday, including U.S. carrier Delta Air Lines (DAL.N). Two operators have closed down since May in the face of diminished traffic and higher labor costs could force some private-jet operators out of business. While private flying remains above 2019 levels, traffic has slowed since the pandemic, when wealthy passengers sought to avoid crowded commercial airports. UAW plans raise specter of strikes at Detroit Three automakers

Aug 15 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers members are planning to vote next week to authorize possible strikes at the Detroit Three automakers ahead of a Sept. 14 deadline, the union said on Tuesday. "Whether or not there's a strike next month is entirely up to the Big Three automakers," Fain said in a statement. The UAW said the talks with all three companies have yet to progress beyond non-economic issues. U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday called on the automakers and the UAW to reach "a fair agreement" before the contracts expire. The UAW said Tuesday that it recently raised strike pay to $500 per week per member and has over $825 million in its strike fund.
