BEIJING/TOKYO, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Chinese and Japanese coast guard ships faced off in waters around disputed islands in the East China Sea again on Wednesday, with both countries saying they deployed patrol ships to urge the other side to leave the territory. The disputed islands, called Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan, are claimed by both countries. The Chinese coast guard said three Japanese ships and several patrol ships illegally entered its territorial waters on Wednesday and that it took necessary control measures in accordance with the law. Japan's coast guard said its patrol boats in turn repeatedly urged three Chinese coast guard vessels to leave the waters. Taiwan and the United States dispute that, saying the Taiwan Strait is an international waterway. China's military described the flight as "public hype", adding it had sent fighters to monitor and warn the U.S. plane. China stages almost daily military activities of its own in the Taiwan Strait and seas and skies around Taiwan. The United States last announced a Poseidon mission through the strait in July.

During a speech on promoting the development of the Yangtze River economic belt, Xi also reaffirmed the goal of modernising China's supply chains, developing advanced manufacturing and strategic emerging industries, state media said. Faced with increased technology curbs imposed by the United States, President Xi has repeatedly stressed the need for self-reliance in technology to curb the use of foreign technology. Provinces and cities along the Yangtze River must shoulder the responsibility for food, energy security as well as supply chain security, state media quoted Xi as saying.

The survey's scope on population changes will focus on urban and rural areas throughout the country, according to state media reports on Tuesday. The plan will help to "accurately and timely monitor China's population developmental changes and provide a basis for the Communist Party and the government to formulate national economic, social development and population related policies," the bureau said. China last conducted its once-in-a-decade census in November 2020 which showed it grew at the slowest pace since the first modern population survey in the 1950s.

BEIJING, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Former party chief and chairman of China Everbright Group Li Xiaopeng was expelled from the Communist Party and his post for severe violations of discipline and law including bribery, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported on Monday. Li is the latest Chinese financial executive found guilty under President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign that has in recent years targeted the country's financial institutions. China's anti-graft body said in April that Li was under investigation for possible law violations. Li's punishment came days after China's ruling Communist Party expelled the former chairman of Bank of China from the party, accusing him of illegal activities and taking bribes. China Everbright Group is one of China's biggest financial conglomerate and owns listed units including China Everbright Bank Ltd (601818.SS), Everbright Securities Co (601788.SS) and China Everbright Ltd (0165.HK).
