CNN —There’s no political playbook for how to deal with another apparent assassination attempt against a major-party presidential candidate within weeks of an election. The second apparent assassination attempt comes against the backdrop of a turbulent campaign that has defied convention and predictions. Another apparent attempt on his life is likely to have some level of personal impact on the former president. In normal circumstances, an apparent assassination attempt against a presidential candidate might be expected to unleash a surge of sympathy that could translate into a political boost. But it’s too early to say whether the second apparent assassination attempt will have greater political impact than the first.

The Trump campaign and its allies have spent more than $38 million replaying that soundbite almost 70,000 times in campaign advertisements since Harris became the Democratic nominee, looking to capitalize on persistent voter concerns about the economy and blunt Harris’ turn-the-page messaging by yoking her to President Joe Biden’s record. “Everyday prices are too high – food, rent, gas, back-to-school clothes,” Harris says in the clip featured in the ad. Last week, Harris’ campaign launched a series of ads on her economic pitch, specifically tailored to key swing states. In addition, her campaign has spent more than $10 million airing an ad in which Harris says, “You want lower prices and lower taxes. I believe you want to just not get by, but you want to get ahead,” before delivering her pitch for an “opportunity economy.”And another top Harris ad contrasts her approach with Trump’s.

Ahead of Tuesday night’s debate in Philadelphia, ABC News did not commit to live fact-checking, but as the event got underway both anchors stepped in to debunk false claims made by Trump on at least three occasions. CNN —Kamala Harris’ joyful campaign will Tuesday be hit by the blunt force of reality — a debate with Donald Trump — the most menacing political foe of modern times. The vice president transformed the 2024 election after President Joe Biden’s abject debate showing against Trump on CNN in June led him to end his reelection bid. Haris will be ‘fully prepared’But to succeed in the debate, the vice president faces three difficult tasks. The conceit, however, allowed the Trump campaign to argue she’d return to her original stance if she won power. “I believe the vice president will be fully prepared to do that.”

Trump appears to have begun to slow Harris' rise, which began after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. At the same time, Harris has abandoned many of her most progressive views that she took during her failed 2020 Democratic presidential primary run. "She's not really quite sure what she believes that's why she is pretty evasive to answering questions on policy, policy positions that she has supported in the past and supposedly what she does not support now," Wolking said. Tuesday's debate will mark the first time Harris and Trump will be in the same room together. With perhaps the exception of the Nixon-Kennedy debate, no other presidential debate will loom larger in history.

Here are six things to watch for on Tuesday night:Will Harris deliver the policy message voters say they want to hear? More than her convention speech, the debate will provide a platform for Harris to answer some of those questions. This image shared by ABC News shows the stage in Philadelphia ahead of the debate between Harris and Trump. Rebecca Wright/CNNWhen Harris sticks by Biden’s policies, Trump attacks them and her as a failure. What’s not up for debate is that Biden, though absent in person, figures to be a prominent figure on the debate stage.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has met more than 150 world leaders since becoming vice president. Still, Harris has not always been the first phone call for foreign leaders or officials looking to get a line into the White House. UkraineA month after Russia invaded Ukraine, Harris was dispatched to NATO’s eastern flank on a reassurance mission – one that also came with some sensitive diplomatic smoothing-over. For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. Democratic presidential nominee and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and vice presidential nominee Tim Walz walk down the steps from Air Force Two at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Savannah, Georgia, U.S., August 28, 2024. Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in a new interview Thursday defended her vice presidential record on immigration and blamed her Republican rival Donald Trump for killing a bipartisan bill aimed to address the U.S.-Mexico border. "He killed the bill, a border security bill that would have put 1500 more agents on the border," she said. Harris vowed to sign that bill into law if she beats Trump in the Nov. 5 election. The vice president picked two hot-button issues to illustrate her point.

A few weeks ago, I started asking left-leaning people their thoughts on slurs being peppered into everyday conversations. An inclusive eraKayla Cash, a 31-year-old PR manager, grew up using words she now considers offensive. Some of the language felt ubiquitous; she remembers the 2004 release of "Let's Get It Started," the Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas hit that was originally released as "Let's Get Retarded." It was billed as discussions between two "bohemian layabouts" who called out performative aspects of progressive politics — while using language more often associated with the right, such as that offensive term for someone with intellectual disabilities. Looser language and new rulesEveryone I talked to for this story had rules for which words they would and wouldn't say.

CNN —Donald Trump’s campaign, which has whiffed in its early attacks on Kamala Harris’ new presidential campaign, will grapple this week for a more effective foothold after the vice president transformed an election of stunning surprises. On Sunday, for instance, he spread a new false conspiracy theory over the size of Harris’ rally crowd in Michigan last week. Trump’s campaign was also forced on Saturday to deny a report in The New York Times that he’d privately referred to Harris as a “b*tch” as he bemoaned her momentum. Therefore, a debate expected between Trump and Harris on ABC on September 10 looms as a pivotal new moment in the campaign. But as Trump has shown in recent days, he still hasn’t worked out a way to respond to the suddenly changed circumstances of the campaign.

President Joe Biden had banked on June’s presidential debate turning around a race that was slipping away from him. Now, Donald Trump may be laying a similar bet after reversing himself by agreeing to debate on ABC next month as his new Democratic opponent enjoys surging momentum. Tim Walz, Trump suddenly looks like old news — a crushing new experience for an ex-president who prides himself on driving the narrative. The clash also looms as an extreme test for Harris. The vice president has a mixed record in debates — she performed strongly in such events early in her failed 2020 presidential campaign.

Tim Walz “misspoke” in a newly resurfaced video from 2018 in which he said he handled assault weapons “in war,” a Harris campaign spokesperson told CNN on Saturday. “We can make sure those weapons of war, that I carried in war, are only carried in war,” Walz said in the video. Lauren Hitt, a Harris campaign spokesperson, said in a statement the governor misspoke in the clip.
