In recent years, the prospect of heavy rains might have sounded good to many people living in California, where drought and wildfires have been the main worries. That was not the case on this weekend, as Hurricane Hilary moved north from the coast of Baja California in Mexico and threatened to dump six to 10 inches of rain on the region. After three of the driest years in California history, much of the state is currently free of drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Storms fueled by “atmospheric rivers” this winter led to flooding and destruction across the state, but they also relieved severe drought conditions across wide swaths of the state, including Los Angeles and San Diego Counties, both of which were in Hilary’s path. Heavy winter rain, as well as record amounts of snow in the Sierra Nevada mountains, also has filled many of the state’s reservoirs well above historical averages, according to California Water Watch, a daily tracker maintained by the California Department of Water Resources.

In its latest advisory, the NHC said Tropical Depression Six, near the Leeward Islands was expected to become a remnant low on Sunday night. Next in line is Tropical Storm Emily in the central Atlantic, which could become a post-tropical cyclone in about 36 hours, the Miami-based forecaster said. Meanwhile, a tropical disturbance near the Cape Verde Islands has a 30% chance of becoming a cyclone over the next two days and a tropical depression is likely to form later this week. While the Atlantic has seen relatively mild activity this year, on the U.S. West Coast, the Tropical Storm Hilary unleashed furious flash floods east and west of Los Angeles on Sunday after barreling through Mexico's Baja California peninsula with deadly force.

Additional strengthening is forecast for the next days, and Hilary is likely to become a major hurricane - defined as a Category 3 or higher - later on Thursday, it added. Hilary is expected to dump 3-6 inches (7.6-15 cm) of rain across parts of the Baja California peninsula through Sunday night. Tropical storm conditions are expected within the south of Baja California by late Friday, and are possible further up the peninsula by early Saturday.

MEXICO CITY, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Tropical storm Eugene is strengthening in the Mexican Pacific and could become a hurricane in the next few hours as it moves parallel to the coast of the Baja California peninsula, the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported on Sunday. "Eugene could become a hurricane later today before starting to weaken on Monday," the NHC said in a report, adding that no coastal warnings were in effect. The state water commission in Mexico, Conagua, said the storm will cause very heavy rains in the state of Baja California Sur and waves up to four meters (13 feet) high. Baja California Sur is home to tourist hotspots like Cabo San Lucas, while Nayarit hosts San Blas and San Pancho. In late June, Hurricane Beatriz dumped heavy rains in its path, also off the Pacific coast of Mexico.

CNN —The number of deaths across Mexico due to extreme heat has hit 249 over the past four months, its Ministry of Health has reported. A hundred deaths were registered in Nuevo León, 28 in Tamaulipas, 26 in Veracruz, and 26 in Sonora between March 19 and July 22. Late last month, some Mexican states hit temperatures of monthly or even all-time high topping 45 degree Celsius(113 degrees Fahrenheit) in certain places. At least two states (Baja California and Sonora) will have temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit). According to government data, 92.4% of deaths are due to “heat stroke,” and the rest are due to dehydration.
