CNN —Kamala Harris is responding to Democratic panic about her White House prospects by turning up the heat on Donald Trump. The vice president warned Monday that the ex-president was “unstable,” “unhinged” and out for “unchecked power” as she sent a jolt of urgency though her campaign with 21 days to go. Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, meanwhile, went even further, suggesting the ex-president’s musings about using the military against domestic foes he branded “the enemy from within” could even amount to treason. An image of former President Donald Trump appears on screen as Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during a campaign rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, on October 14, 2024. Trump sought to make inroads with young men who are often low-propensity voters but who could add to his coalition.

Technology giants are turning to nuclear energy to power the energy-intensive data centers needed to train and run the massive artificial intelligence models behind today's generative AI applications. Microsoft and Google are among the firms agreeing deals to purchase nuclear power from certain suppliers in the U.S. to bring additional energy capacity online for its data centers. This week, Google said it would purchase power from Kairos Power, a developer of small modular reactors, to help "deliver on the progress of AI." Google said its first nuclear reactor from Kairos Power would be online by 2030, with more reactors going live through 2035. The tech giant isn't the only firm looking to nuclear power to realize its AI ambitions.

There is an impending wave of new startups spinning out of larger AI labs, per Air Street Capital's State of AI report. AI labs are fragmenting due to ego clashes, philosophical disagreements, and commercial pressures. But as AI labs work towards the sector's holy grail, known as artificial general intelligence, those personalities have clashed — sometimes leading to a very public parting of ways. They are just some of the examples in a long line of AI labs that have fractured away from their juggernaut predecessors to form new startups. The exception would be if AI labs pivot toward building a niche model within a specific vertical, he said.

As mortgage rates stagnate around 6%, prospective homebuyers are feeling nostalgic for the 3% interest rates of 2020 and 2021. Google search results for the term "assumable mortgage" spiked in May, following a steady upward trend starting in 2022. Mortgage assumptions allow buyers to take over an existing mortgage at its current rate, possibly securing mortgage rates as low as 2% or 3% depending on when the original mortgage was taken out. Mortgage assumptions were a popular way to buy a house in the 1970s and 1980s but have largely fallen out of public consciousness. Watch the video above to learn more about assumable mortgages, how they work, and why they can come with their own set of hurdles.

Many colleges are under financial pressure, and the cracks are starting to show. At least 20 colleges closed in 2024, and more are set to shut down after the current academic year, according to the latest tally by Implan, an economic software and analysis company. Altogether, more than 40 colleges have closed since 2020, according to a separate report by Best Colleges. Experts have continuously warned that ongoing problems with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid form have resulted in fewer students applying for financial aid, which could also contribute to declining enrollment. That has left some colleges and universities in a bind, especially "small private — often liberal arts — schools," said Candi Clouse, a vice president at Implan.

We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages

Without laborious renaming, everything behind those links — billions of them, a decade of digital content — will become inaccessible. We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages. The Department of Veterans Affairs is legally required to preserve all medical records for 75 years after the death of a vet — but it's having problems, in part because of a balky digital records system. "Over the long term, you can't preserve a digital object in its original form," says Manoff, the former MIT librarian. The Dark Ages, as historians used to call the early centuries of medieval Europe, lasted for 500 years.

Google said Monday that it will purchase power from small modular reactor developer Kairos Power, as tech companies increasingly turn to nuclear power as a way to fulfill the growing energy demands from data centers. Monday's announcement is another example of the growing partnership between tech companies and nuclear power. Data centers need 24/7 reliable power, and right now nuclear is the only source of emissions-free baseload power. Many hyperscalers have ambitious emissions-reduction targets, which is why they're turning to nuclear power. Attorneys general in 14 different states filed lawsuits against TikTok last week. The suits mirror earlier ones against Big Tobacco and Purdue Pharma, legal experts told BI. The Sackler family, owners of Purdue Pharma, ultimately paid over $3 billion in settlements for misleading advertising related to their products. Purdue Pharma later filed for bankruptcy, but the Supreme Court struck down a $7 billion bankruptcy plan in June that would have given the Sackler's immunity from future civil suits. With the prospect of that federal ban looming next year, a slew of federal lawsuits helps shape public opinion and "pressure lawmakers to act," Rahmani said.
