I'm a high school teacher, and I see parents spend way too much on school supplies all the time. Many states have tax-free weekends, and many stores schedule school supply sales for those weekends. As a high school teacher, I often see families overspending and wasting money. Have your school supply list handy as soon as it's released, and pick up the items on sale when you find them. Check with your school for support programsIf money is tight (and even if it's not), check with your school and community to see if there are support programs for school supplies.

See how we rate credit cards to write unbiased product reviews. I grew up in poverty, but as I started my financial journey, I benefited from cash-back credit cards. While travel rewards cards may offer better overall rewards, cash-back cards make small splurges easy. Many cash-back cards come with a sign-up bonus as well — often up to $200 extra. Business Insider's pick for the best cash-back credit card for everyday use is the Chase Freedom Unlimited®.

I'm a financial planner with several easy steps you can take now that will set you up for financial success. These funds should be placed in an easily accessible FDIC-insured high-yield savings account. Park your cash in a high-yield savings accountA common financial mistake people in their 20s make is letting their savings sit in a low-yield checking or savings account. Keep in mind that online banks offer most high-yield savings accounts, so you won't have access to a physical branch. Many online high-yield savings accounts, like Discover, allow you to manage multiple savings accounts under one login, making this strategy even more convenient.

Finance, health care and other regulated industries should consider their specific needs and tailor their defenses with military-grade components, he added. The implementation of military-grade cybersecurity is not without challenges. In 2024, regulated industries have witnessed a significant increase in both the number and cost of data breaches. Frederic Rivain, chief technology officer of Dashlane, holds a contrarian view on the need for military-grade defenses. "Multifactor authentication is important, and you must have it, but you still need to have multiple layers," Two Bears said.

I want to retire early, so I asked a financial planner what mistakes I should watch out for. In an effort to get on track, I chatted with certified public accountant and certified financial planner Ryan Nelson about the most common mistakes people make when they attempt to retire early. He advised people to proactively calculate the cost of health insurance during early retirement before reaching Medicare age, which is currently 65. "Look into private marketplace options, whether individual health insurance plans, health sharing ministries, or short-term health insurance plans to see how much these could cost." Not maximizing health savings account contributionsFor those planning to retire early, Nelson also recommend that they maximize their health savings account contributions.

CNN —Iran is using covert social media activity and related influence operations in an effort to undercut the candidacy of former President Donald Trump, a US intelligence official said Monday in an updated assessment of threats to the November election. Iran’s preference for a US presidential candidate has not changed since 2020, the ODNI official said. In the 2020 election campaign, Iran “carried out a multi-pronged covert influence campaign intended to undercut former President Trump’s reelection prospects,” according to a declassified US intelligence report. The Russian government regularly denies US allegations of election influence. China “probably does not plan to influence the outcome” of the US presidential election, but US intelligence is monitoring the possibility that China-linked propagandists and influence actors could “denigrate down-ballot candidates,” the updated assessment says.

CNN —In his speech to Congress on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu struck a defiant tone, pledging to carry on with the war in Gaza until Israeli hostages are released and Hamas is eliminated. He defended Israel’s actions, pushing back against criticism that the war has gone on for too long and resulted in too many civilian casualties. The incident Netanyahu appeared to refer to occurred in May and killed at least 45 people at a camp for displaced Palestinians. Israeli officials have been making the claim that Hamas was stealing aid since October. UN Humanitarian Coordinator Lynn Hastings told CNN then that Hamas wasn’t stealing aid because aid wasn’t coming in.

I asked a financial planner whether I should take money out of savings if interest rates drop. I haven't felt ready to follow their advice, especially since my high-yield savings account at Ally Bank has been offering 4% to 5% APY on the money in the account. If that happens, it might make sense for me to move money out of my high-yield savings account. I met with certified financial planner Jake Skelhorn, who shared three things I can do with that cash if interest rates drop. "While more volatile year-to-year, stock market returns have averaged approximately 10%, which is about double what you're getting in a high-yield savings account today."

Financial planners said real estate is a top source of passive income for their clients. Making passive income isn't always as easy as it sounds — it takes time and money up front, and the benefits don't come overnight. To find out how people are earning passive income, Business Insider asked several financial advisors to share their clients' top passive-income sources. "Passive income sources like podcasts, websites, apps, YouTube channels generating income off of ads — those are really common sources of passive income that I've seen," he told Business Insider.
