Klaudia Radecka | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesTesla 's hyped robotaxi unveiling posed a threat to Uber 's ride-sharing aspirations, but it has turned into a boon for the stock instead. That is a massive turnaround for Uber's stock, which is now up nearly 22% over the past month and about 38% for the year. "We believe this helps minimize the ongoing overhang on UBER's stock from TSLA's aspirations in the robotaxi space." Although Tesla appears committed to developing its robotaxi fleet without partnering with existing ride-sharing platforms, Colantuoni expects it could ultimately have to look into this option. Tesla "potentially underappreciates the obstacles to scaling a robotaxi fleet" and could struggle to scale its fleet operations without offering access to demand through Uber and Lyft, he said.

Elon Musk surprised viewers with the unveiling of Tesla's Robovan at the 'We Robot' event Thursday. Musk shared on X that the Robovan's design was inspired by Art Deco trains. But the Robovan's exterior aesthetic appears to be inspired by the early 20th century Art Deco design period. In response to a user who asked about what inspired the design, Musk replied, "Art Deco trains." Art Deco trains were a product of the Art Deco era, which took place in the 1920s and 1930s.

Waymo's ex-CEO said Tesla isn't "serious about building a safe and accessible Robotaxi business." AdvertisementIt seems former Waymo CEO John Krafcik was unimpressed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk's much-hyped "We, Robot" event. Alongside the Robotaxi, Tesla also showed off a 20-passenger Robovan and its Optimus humanoid robots. He added: "If a company were serious about building a safe and accessible Robotaxi business, it would look nothing like what was shown, or said, last night." AdvertisementIf Elon Musk can fully deliver on his plans to make Tesla's Robotaxi the new go-to mode of transport, he could bring an end to the ride-hailing economy as we know it. "Tesla's vehicles, sensors, and software will all need to be approved in any market they hope to enter. "Until Tesla robotaxis are transporting 100,000 paying customers a week around major American cities like Waymo does, Tesla Robotaxi is nothing more than the latest work of fiction to come out of the Warner Bros. "We also believe TSLA could struggle to scale fleet operations without offering access to demand via Uber/Lyft." After a decade of unfulfilled promises about driverless vehicles, Tesla CEO Elon Musk hyped the company's Cybercab concept on Thursday night, showing off a low, silver two-seater with no steering wheels or pedals. Musk offered no details about exactly where Tesla plans to produce the cars, but said consumers would be able to buy a Tesla Cybercab for below $30,000. FSD, which stands for Full Self-Driving, is Tesla's premium driver assistance system, available today in a "supervised" version for Tesla electric vehicles. Musk also revealed plans to produce an autonomous, electric Robovan that can carry up to 20 people, or be used to transport goods. He said the Cybercab and Robovan would employ inductive charging, meaning these autonomous vehicles could roll up to a station to recharge, with no plugging in required.

Tesla is expected to unveil a new service at its Robotaxi event that will impact Uber and Lyft. The ride-hailing industry has so far been dominated by two major players — Uber and Lyft — and Gawrelski said Tesla's Robotaxi could mark a new challenger jockeying for market share. Uber, Lyft, and Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Ives said Tesla's Robotaxi event will be a historical day for the auto industry — and it will pressure Uber to seek out more partnerships. In September, Waymo announced that its Waymo One ride-hailing service would be available to users in Austin and Atlanta exclusively through the Uber app.

Republican presidential nominee, former U.S. President Donald Trump, speaks at the Detroit Economic Club on October 10, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan. Donald Trump on Thursday will support making interest on car loans fully tax deductible, the latest in a suite of tax-cut promises the Republican presidential nominee has made in the weeks before Election Day. Trump, in a speech to the Detroit Economic Club, will compare the plan to an existing tax deduction on mortgage interest, according to excerpts provided beforehand by the Trump campaign. The plan "will stimulate massive domestic auto production, and make car ownership dramatically more affordable for millions of working American families," Trump will say. Trump has already voiced support on the campaign trail for a slew of other tax breaks, including ending taxation of service workers' tips and seniors' Social Security benefits.

New York CNN —Elon Musk and Tesla have pledged a game-changing moment in the company’s history Thursday night. For the last decade, the electric vehicle maker’s CEO has vowed that true self-driving cars from Tesla were right around the corner. And even if the technology is as advanced as Musk likes to claim, getting regulatory approval to operate could be difficult. Tesla and Musk have made promises many, many times before about autonomous vehicle capabilities and when true self-driving would be available. “Either you walk away from the event as a jaw dropping moment, or you walk away with a shrug of shoulders event.”

Tesla is about to unveil its Robotaxi, the self-driving car Elon Musk has talked about for years. Tesla will host its long-awaited Robotaxi event on Thursday, where the company is set to unveil the self-driving car Musk has teased for years. Tesla shares slumped earlier this year after Musk moved the Robotaxi event from August to October, which fueled concerns about the new technology. Tesla is hosting the Robotaxi event at Warner Bros. GM's investor day showcased many of the company's current achievements, but did not provide much insight on strategy," Bernstein analyst Daniel Roeska wrote Wednesday in an investor note. "GM's Investor Day yesterday didn't provide much in the way of sharp shifts in strategy. Through the first half of 2024, GM earned $8.3 billion in EBIT-adjusted and generated $6.4 billion in adjusted automotive free cash flow. GM's 2024 financial guidance includes anticipated capital spending of between $10.5 billion and $11.5 billion. Autonomous taxis are winning over women in cities like San Francisco by offering an answer to a long-standing concern about ride-hailing apps: misbehavior by human drivers, especially men. Now, those driver safety concerns are helping to fuel the popularity of autonomous taxis — especially for women traveling alone or at night. About three-quarters of Lyft and Uber drivers are men, according to industry and academic surveys. Lyft said in a statement to NBC News that it continues to try to improve safety, including with driver background checks, driver ratings, driver education and an emergency phone line for passengers. In 2023, Lyft started a feature, Women+ Connect, that allows women or nonbinary drivers to opt in to prefer riders who are women or nonbinary, and vice versa.

Driverless cars are speeding onto America's streets, but whether the public will trust robotaxis remains an open question. Nearly two-thirds of Americans said they would not want to ride in a driverless passenger vehicle if they had the opportunity, according to a Pew Research Center Survey. Tesla's upcoming robotaxi launch threatens to throw the whole autonomous vehicle space off course. Alphabet -owned Waymo is the leader in the space, with the company claiming it has notched more than 22 million driverless miles. Uber has hedged its bets by inking high-profile deals with autonomous vehicle companies, but it's unclear how long those partnerships will last.

DETROIT — A lot has changed since General Motors' last investor day two years ago, but one thing that hasn't is the automaker's ability to outperform Wall Street's expectations — doing so every quarter since then. "Accordingly, whereas the theme for GM three years ago was "Growth Motors," we believe the theme today is "praGMatic Motors." To underscore that effort, the event is taking place GM's vehicle assembly and Ultium EV battery plants in Tennessee. Barra and other executives have stressed such a dual strategy since lowering or withdrawing nearly all of the company's EV targets amid slower than expected adoption of electric vehicles. "We are making the most of every opportunity we have in ICE and in EV and leveraging our core strengths," Barra said during the company's second-quarter investor call in July.

Elon Musk has a big task this week: convincing investors that Tesla is more than just a car company. It may do so once again as Elon Musk prepares to use the studio lot to tell another story: that Tesla is more than just a car company. The long-awaited event — originally scheduled for August — is meant to give weight to the electric vehicle maker's pitch that it is a tech company first and a car company second. Meanwhile, in July, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives claimed the "Tesla AI story could be worth $1 trillion-plus and is the most undervalued AI name."
