He told state media that 30,000 officials were disciplined for corruption in 2024. AdvertisementRussia's prosecutor-general said on Monday that detections of corruption among officials have jumped this year, with a 30% increase in bribery cases compared to 2023. Igor Krasnov told state media that almost 30,000 Russian officials were caught and disciplined for breaking anti-graft rules in 2024. Krasnov said that at least half of all corruption cases involved bribery and that almost 19,000 such crimes were discovered in the first nine months of 2024. That's nearly as many as the 20,300 bribery cases his office found in 2023, Krasnov added.

American journalist Austin Tice is alive and in Syria more than a decade after his disappearance, his family says. Tice went missing in 2012 a few days after celebrating his 31st birthday in the country, where he went to report on the civil war that began in 2011. Siblings Meagan Tice Malone and Simon Robert Tice on Monday told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell that the family has reliable information that their brother is alive but could not share how they know. Simon Robert was only 19 when his older brother went missing, he said. “We have a strong faith in the American government, and we were all raised with a faith in the American government,” Simon Robert Tice said.

As a Syrian “foreign fighter” in his early 20s, Jolani crossed into Iraq to fight the Americans when they invaded the country in the spring of 2003. For its part, the Biden administration is taking no chances over whether Jolani has the capability to manage the threat from ISIS. What to do about those US forces in Syria is a decision that Trump will likely face as he assumes office. Jolani was fighting against the Americans in Iraq then, so he is presumably aware of this instructive history. In Libya in 2011, a US-led NATO bombing campaign contributed to the fall of another brutal secular dictator, Moammar Gadhafi.

“If the housing market were going to crash, it would have already crashed by now,” said Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin. “The housing market has been so resilient to interest rates going up as high as they have.”Here are five housing market predictions for 2025, according to Fairweather and other economists. If fewer homes are built in a supply-constrained market, prices might grow much higher, said Channel. More than 21 million renter households are “cost-burdened,” meaning they spent more than 30% of their income on housing costs, according to 2023 U.S. Census data. “Rent prices typically decline in the colder months of the year,” as fewer people are apartment hunting in the late fall and winter seasons.

If fewer homes are built in a supply-constrained market, prices might grow much higher, said Channel. A stable rental market will also give renters more strength to negotiate with landlords. For instance: Austin, Texas was the "epicenter of multi-family construction," she said, meaning a lot of new supply was added into the city's rental market, bringing rental costs down. In contrast, supply-constrained metropolitan areas like Seattle, Washington, D.C., and New York City, are experiencing high rent growth of 5% annually. Mortgage rates declined this fall in anticipation of the first interest rate cut since March 2020.

He also pledged to continue the mission against ISIS and to ensure the security of detention facilities in Syria that hold ISIS fighters. He added that U.S. forces conducted a dozen precision air strikes in Syria on Sunday, targeting ISIS camps and operatives. In an exclusive interview with Donald Trump on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, the president-elect told NBC News' Kristen Welker that Ukraine will "possibly" receive less military aid once he takes office. Trump told Welker of support that has gone to Ukraine since the war began in February 2022. All told, the U.S. has committed more than $62 billion in assistance to Ukraine since the conflict started nearly three years ago. The comments suggest that Zelenskyy's diplomatic skills were to credit for the tens of billions of dollars in U.S. military aid packages, rather than the country's actual needs. "Europe is in for a fraction, and war with Russia is more important for Europe than it is for us," Trump told Welker.

More universities are offering degrees in artificial intelligence, so BI rounded them up. Other institutes are offering graduate degrees in AI or degrees with AI specializations. As more colleges introduce an AI major, it means the computer science degree, long viewed as a pipeline into Big Tech, has some more competition. Stanford University's symbolic systems degree and Carnegie Mellon's computer science degree also offer AI concentrations. Musk financed RBG PAC, according to the report the group filed Thursday night with the Federal Election Commission. The super PAC, which did not disclose its donors before the election, launched ads contending that Trump did not support a federal abortion ban. But during this campaign, Trump backed away from that position and instead declared that he supported states' rights to decide abortion laws. Musk also gave $3 million to the MAHA Alliance, a super PAC affiliated with Robert F. Kennedy's "Make America Healthy Again" push, in late October. The fact sheet, which offers limited insight into the classified counter-drone strategy, sketches out five steps that the US will take to tackle the drone problem in the near, mid, and long term. UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot Wednesday doing something countless other American executives routinely do: Walking unaccompanied to an investor event held by his company. But the slaying on a Manhattan sidewalk of Thompson, head of the largest private health insurer in the U.S., is the highest profile such incident in decades. Several health-care companies have reacted by pulling photos of executives from websites, and health insurer Centene made an investor meeting virtual after the killing. None of the executives of UnitedHealth received personal security benefits, according to the company's filings.

Washington CNN —The family of Austin Tice, a freelance journalist held in Syria since 2012, said they have new confirmation that he remains alive and well. A source familiar with what the Biden administration knows says there is no change in the administration’s assessment of Austin Tice, and they have no new information. Bill McCarren, director of the Press Freedom Center at the National Press Club, emphatically insisted the Biden administration is “lying” about what they know about Tice. “Our larger question was, how can we use this disruption to leverage something for Austin during this time?” she said. Austin’s father, Marc Tice, said that the family met with the State Department on Thursday, but that the meeting was not productive.

AdvertisementChina is flooding the developing world with cheap goods. China's exports, meanwhile, are growing at a rate of around 12% in dollar terms year-on-year, according to October trade data, with 50% being sent to the developing world. Meanwhile, consumers in the developing world have benefited from the influx of affordable Chinese goods. As the economies of developing nations become woven more tightly with China's, the volume of cheap Chinese imports has increased. Yet the importance it places on its status as a manufacturing powerhouse, and the relative weakness of domestic Chinese demand, means the flow of cheap Chinese goods abroad is unlikely to let up anytime soon.
