The Tennessee man charged with kidnapping and killing a kindergarten teacher during a morning run two years ago pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, officials said Monday. Cleotha Abston, 40, was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, for the Sept. 2, 2022, murder of Eliza Fletcher, 34, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. Memphis Police DepartmentFletcher, a mother of two, had gone for a run near the University of Memphis when Abston forced her into his vehicle. Abston was linked to Fletcher's death through surveillance video and forensic evidence, the prosecutor’s office said. Abston’s lawyer, Juni Ganguli, said he had advised Abston to accept an agreement with prosecutors.

The alleged shooter, John Sawchak – Moturi’s neighbor – surrendered around 1:24 a.m. Monday, following an hourslong standoff with police, O’Hara said at a news conference early Monday. Sawchak has been charged with attempted murder, felony assault, and stalking and harassment for allegedly shooting Moturi, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said in court filings. By the time of his arrest, Sawchak had a yearslong history of harassing, threatening and attacking his neighbors, with three active warrants against him – including one for threats against Moturi. Court documents state that Sawchak shot his neighbor in the neck with a firearm from an open upstairs window. Moturi told them that his neighbor had threatened to shoot him “if he touched a specific tree.” While Moturi was cutting the tree, he was shot. The chief said Sawchak has not been arrested because he is “mentally ill” and possesses firearms. O’Hara said anyone who suggests that police do not want to arrest Sawchak is “simply wrong.” Frey’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In January 2016, he allegedly verbally harassed a neighbor while holding a knife and threatened to kill a neighbor, the documents say.

Russian actors "manufactured and amplified" a recent viral video that falsely showed a person tearing up ballots in Pennsylvania, the FBI and two other federal agencies said Friday. In the video, a person is seen destroying what are purported to be filled-out ballots in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. “The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office will not tolerate any voter suppression, intimidation, or fraud,” the statement added. Darren Linvill, co-director at Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub, attributed the viral video to the Russian disinformation production team known to researchers as Storm-1516. The video’s quality and the use of actors who appear to have West African accents to pose as Black Americans were characteristic of the Russian campaign, Linvill said.

CNN —A Florida woman was found guilty of second-degree murder Friday after authorities said she zipped her boyfriend up in a suitcase and left him for dead back in 2020. Sarah Boone, now 47, told authorities her boyfriend got trapped in a suitcase and died during a game of hide-and-seek, court records show. Boone also testified she thought Torres could get out of the suitcase, the affiliate said. She testified in her own defense for almost five hours, CNN affiliate WESH reported. Boone’s attorney said they were very disappointed following the verdict, while the family of Torres was emotional and declined to speak with the media, CNN affiliate WESH reported.

Esther Granger was identified by the Kane County Coroner’s Office on Thursday as the woman whose skull was found in 1978, but she died more than 150 years earlier. The skull was turned back into the police and officials linked this skull to the 1978 report, which renewed the investigation. In 2023, Kane County officials contacted Othram, a Texas company that works on solving cold cases across the country, to assist with further DNA testing. Officials contacted Granger’s great-great grandson, Wayne Svilar, and he submitted his DNA for testing, which was a match, he said during Thursday’s news conference. Svilar, 69, said he did not believe the news when he was first contacted by county officials in April about his great-great grandmother.

At least a dozen mail ballots were stolen, fraudulently filled out and submitted in Colorado for the Nov. 5 election, the Colorado secretary of state’s office said Thursday. Authorities said the ballots were mailed into the Mesa County election office via USPS, not returned in drop boxes. The secretary of state’s office said nearly all of the votes cast on the stolen ballots were stopped before they were counted. But three ballots were counted before election officials could pull them from the process because they passed signature verification. Mesa County has been home to election conspiracies in recent years, including by former Republican Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who was recently convicted in a 2021 security breach of the county’s election system.

Two co-owners of a Colorado funeral home where around 190 decomposing bodies were found last year pleaded guilty Thursday to federal fraud charges, officials said. Some of the remains found were of people who died in 2019, four years earlier, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. The Hallfords also admitted to Covid relief fraud of around $800,000, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. The funeral home where the remains were found was later demolished, NBC affiliate KUSA of Denver reported at the time. Attorneys listed as representing Jon Hallford and Carie Hallford did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday evening.

CNN —An Arizona teen has been indicted on terrorism charges after allegedly planning to launch deadly explosives at the Phoenix Pride Festival last weekend. The teenager has been charged with one count of terrorism and one count of conspiracy to commit terrorism, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said in a statement –– both of which are felonies. Prosecutors believe the 17-year-old had intended to cause “serious injury or death” to participants at the festival, the statement read, after an investigation into the planned attack found that the teen had joined online chat rooms where he discussed needing supplies to create an “improvised explosive device,” according to the indictment. Prosecutors also believe that the teenager was motivated by the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, and that he the 17-year-old was operating with at least two other co-conspirators –– one “unnamed” and another referred to as “Juvenile A.”The defendant will be tried as an adult and is being held in jail on a $1 million cash-only bond, prosectors said. CNN is working to determine the suspect’s legal representation and has reached out to the county public defender’s office for further information.

A Southern California man is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting nine women, one of whom died, prosecutors said. Michael DiGiorgio, 50, has been charged with murder, three felony counts of rape by use of a drug in connection to events that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office say happened at his homes in Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach. He was arrested Thursday morning by Redondo Beach police and remains in jail, NBC Los Angeles reported. “I extend my deepest sympathy to the victims, whose lives have been irrevocably changed and the life lost by the alleged brutal acts of the offender,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. “Our office is committed to holding him accountable for the pain and trauma he has inflicted.”

Felix Herrera Garcia, 35, of the Bronx, was also sentenced to five years of supervised release, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Garcia pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death, and possession with intent to distribute narcotics resulting in death. Herrera Garcia was captured in Mexico after fleeing the country, authorities said. Between October 2022 through September 2023 Herrera Garcia and other defendants conspired to sell drugs out of the daycare, prosecutors said. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in Wednesday's statement that Herrera Garcia recklessly placed babies at risk of fentanyl exposure.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of killing his father at a popular waterfall in Southern California, authorities said. About 6 p.m. Wednesday, up to nine mixed-breed pit bulls “brutally and viciously” attacked a man in a backyard, Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins said Thursday during a news conference. It was not known why he was in the yard, which was next door to the residence where the dogs lived, Hawkins said. The homeowner, who is a different person than the caretaker, does not live at the residence, Hawkins said. He said it was not clear why there were so many dogs at the residence or how the dogs got into a neighboring yard.

Harvey Weinstein’s attorneys have submitted a filing opposing a move by prosecutors to combine two sexual crimes cases against the disgraced film mogul. Manhattan prosecutors have sought to consolidate new charges with ones previously brought against Weinstein so that they could be tried in court together. But in a court document, a response to the prosecutors' motion to consolidate cases filed Oct. 2, the Oscar-winning producer’s lawyers accused the district attorney’s office of acting improperly and unfairly. Bragg’s office signaled that it would seek to link the two cases together ahead of Weinstein’s retrial. Samson says prosecutors say they won’t be ready in time and want to move the trial to January.

CNN —Sean “Diddy” Combs has spent his three weeks in jail speaking with his defense attorneys, preparing for his case and receiving visiting from his family, a source close to the music producer told CNN. In a letter to Judge Arun Subramanian, Combs’ attorneys said on Wednesday that they intend to request a trial date in April or May 2025. Following the release of the video, Combs apologized. The motion filed by Combs’ attorneys also alleges that authorities alerted the media about the searches in March of his homes in Los Angeles and Miami. Combs’ attorneys said they want the judge to order the government to immediately produce the materials seized over six months ago.
