But Southwest Airlines is on a mission to change that. The new boarding practices include highly visible changes like upbeat music on the jet bridge and video monitors that tell passengers when boarding will begin. The monitors also include lights that flash during boarding, according to the Journal. But some of the airline's ideas are less consumer-facing, and focus on optimizing the boarding process from the airline's side of operations. There, passengers can streamline the boarding process and potentially even upgrade their tickets before they get on a plane.

REUTERS/Alyssa Pointer/File PhotoWASHINGTON, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson will testify on Feb. 9 before the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee after a holiday meltdown forced the budget carrier to cancel thousands of flights. The hearing titled "Strengthening Airline Operations and Consumer Protections" will also include Southwest Airlines Pilots Association President Captain Casey Murray, Sharon Pinkerton, a senior official with Airlines for America, an industry group, and Paul Hudson, who heads Flyers' Rights, a passenger advocacy organization. The FAA has struggled to modernize some long-standing parts of air traffic control. A 2021 Transportation Department Office of Inspection General (OIG) report repeatedly cited challenges in the FAA's multi-billion dollar Next Generation Air Transportation System (Next) infrastructure project. In October, for example, the FAA said it was working to end a long-ridiculed, decades-old practice of air traffic controllers using paper flight strips to keep track of aircraft. ERAM in 2015 replaced the 40-year-old En Route Host computer and backup system used at 20 FAA Air Route Traffic Control Centers nationwide. House Transportation Committee chair Sam Graves, a Republican, labeled as "inexcusable" FAA’s failure to properly maintain and operate the air traffic control system.

REUTERS/Elijah NouvelageWASHINGTON, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Airlines canceled more than 2,700 U.S. flights Thursday and Friday, disrupting holiday travel for thousands, as a powerful winter storm hit the United States. The extreme weather coincided with the start of a holiday travel season that could be one of the busiest ever. The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday that the winter storm was bringing blizzard conditions to the Midwest with major travel disruptions expected in Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul. More than 1,830 U.S. flights had been canceled Thursday and another 900 flights for Friday were scrapped, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Last year's holiday period was marred by an outbreak of COVID-19 among staff that forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights.
The storm will begin to organize on Wednesday, bringing snow and wind to the Rockies and northern Plains. On Thursday, heavy snow with strong winds will move into the Midwest, Great Lakes and central Plains. Even the Southeast will experience strong winds. As snow is falling across the Midwest and Great Lakes, the I-95 corridor will be getting lashed with torrential rain and strong winds. Despite the precipitation ending late Friday, strong winds lingering in the first half of Saturday could continue to spark delays until the winds subside.

A fuel pump caught fire at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Friday, forcing a ground stop at one of the nation's busiest hubs, officials said. "A fire occurred this morning at the DFW Airport fuel farm located on the west side of the airport," according to an FAA statement. By 12:42 p.m., DFW said the fuel pump was working again — but that overall operations would still be behind schedule for much of the day. "The airlines’ fuel contractor has restored operations at their facility, and they are in the process of sending fuel to aircraft," the airport statement said. DFW served 62.6 million passengers last year, making it the second-busiest airport with only Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport handling more traffic, according to Airports Council International.
